# Airline pilots in Indonesia: licences, flight school, service bonds, pay, applying safely

## What does an airline pilot do in Indonesia?

A pilot flies the aircraft safely under the operator's procedures and aviation rules: planning the flight with the operations team, checking weather and the aircraft, calculating fuel and load, talking to air traffic control and landing the aircraft. A commercial aircraft has a captain as pilot-in-command and a co-pilot. Law 1/2009 Article 58, as amended by Law 6/2023, requires personnel who operate an aircraft to hold a valid licence. To become a pilot you need a class 1 aviation medical, training at a certified flight school and a CPL licence.

## What do you need to become a pilot in Indonesia?

Pilots usually graduate from a certified flight school and must hold a licence from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA); foreign licences can be recognised through central government validation (Law 1/2009 Article 60, as amended by Law 6/2023). CASR Part 61 requires a class 1 medical for commercial (CPL) and airline transport (ATPL) licences, plus ICAO-scale radiotelephony language skills. Government flight schools also set age, report-card and health requirements, including no colour blindness.

## What does a typical pilot job description look like?

Pilot vacancies usually state the licence required, flight hours, a specific type rating and a valid class 1 medical certificate. Cadet programmes funded by an employer may come with a service bond, so read the terms. The description below is written by us from common ad patterns, not a vacancy from any airline. Minister of Manpower Circular M/6/HK.04/V/2025 point 2 prohibits employers from discriminating on any basis in recruitment.

## How much do pilots earn in Indonesia?

KarirAman does not show a pilot pay figure yet because there is no data that meets our standard, and we do not quote job-site medians with unclear samples. As a legal floor, Government Regulation 36/2021 Articles 23 and 24 ban pay below the minimum wage for workers with less than one year of service. Before signing, ask in writing for base pay, flying allowances and any service-bond deductions or repayments.

## Which education path leads to becoming a pilot?

There are government flight schools, such as the D4 pilot programme at the Indonesian Aviation Polytechnic in Curug (PPI Curug) and the Indonesian Pilot Academy in Banyuwangi, and private flight schools. CASR Part 141 bars anyone from operating as a certificated pilot school without a certificate from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation. At PPI Curug, the government-sponsored track prepares civil servants with subsidised fees, and the independent track prepares cadets for industry.

## Which licences does a pilot need in Indonesia?

The path starts with a student pilot licence, then a private pilot licence (PPL), which CASR Part 61 says may not be used to fly for pay. To work, a pilot needs a commercial pilot licence (CPL), with an instrument rating and multi-engine class rating where required, and then a type rating for the aircraft flown. The airline transport pilot licence (ATPL) allows acting as pilot-in-command in commercial air transport on multi-pilot aircraft.

## How much does pilot training cost, and who pays?

Pilot training costs depend on the route. PPI Curug says Ministry of Transportation polytechnics charge no entry fee, government-sponsored cadets have their education subsidised, and official selection fees, including the pilot medical selection and the flight aptitude test, are paid through a virtual account number from the registration portal. For private schools, ask for a written cost breakdown for every stage. Never pay into anyone's personal account.

## What should you check in a cadet pilot service bond and its penalties?

Cadet programmes funded by an airline or employer may include a service bond: an obligation to work for a set period or repay costs if you leave early. Government Regulation 35/2021 Article 36(i) says a worker who resigns must not be bound by a service bond. For fixed-term contracts, Law 13/2003 Article 62 sets compensation equal to the wages until the contract's end. Check the bond length, the penalty formula and which documents are held.

**Legal status:** the Labour Protection Law was approved by the DPR and the Government on 6 October 2026 but has not been promulgated and its text is not public. Until it takes effect, the rules on this page apply.

## How does a pilot progress from co-pilot to captain?

New airline pilots usually start as co-pilots (first officers) after completing the type rating for the aircraft they will fly. To become captain, or pilot-in-command, in commercial air transport on aircraft certificated for more than one pilot, CASR Part 61 item 61.171 requires an airline transport pilot licence (ATPL). That licence is issued only after the applicant passes a practical test (61.157) and meets the knowledge requirements, including instrument rating subjects. Time flown as co-pilot counts towards the higher licence, up to a set limit. Besides becoming captain, experienced pilots can earn a flight instructor certificate, also governed by CASR Part 61, or move to cargo and charter operators.

## How do you check a cadet programme or flight school before paying?

1. Ask for the school's or programme organiser's legal entity name and check it on AHU.
2. Ask for the pilot school certificate number under CASR Part 141 and check it with the Directorate General of Civil Aviation.
3. For government schools, register only through the school's official portal and pay only through the virtual account number that portal issues.
4. Ask for a written cost breakdown for each stage: ground school, flight hours, medical tests, licence exams and the type rating.
5. For airline cadet programmes, read the service bond: its length, the penalty formula and which documents are held.
6. Refuse anyone who promises a pass in exchange for money, keep the evidence and report it to the police. If you have already paid, also report it to the Indonesia Anti-Scam Centre.

**Why they ask:** Much logistics and transport work does not follow office hours.

**How to answer:** Answer honestly, then ask about the schedule, rest time, any meal or lodging allowance and how overtime is recorded. Get it in writing.

**How do you act in an emergency on a plane, ship or train?**

**Why they ask:** Cabin and ship crews are responsible for many people's safety.

**How to answer:** Explain that you follow procedures and training, stay calm, give clear instructions and work with the crew. Mention only safety training you actually hold.

**How do you adapt to time away from home and colleagues from different cultures?**

**Why they ask:** Work on aircraft or ships means irregular schedules and mixed teams.

**How to answer:** Give an example of adapting to a new setting, how you keep in touch with family and how you respect colleagues from other cultures.

- **Tell me about yourself.** Answer in about a minute: where you are now in work or study, two experiences that matter for this job, then why you applied. Personal matters such as family status are not needed.
- **Why did you apply to this company?** Mention one or two real things you learned from the company's official website, such as its business or services, and link them to your skills.
- **Why are you interested in this role?** Pick two tasks from the job advert, describe similar things you have done, and say which part you most want to grow in.
- **What are your strengths?** Name one or two strengths and give short proof: the situation, what you did and the result.
- **What is your weakness?** Choose a real weakness that is not central to the job, then explain what you are doing to improve it.
- **Tell me about a problem at work or school that you solved.** Use the STAR pattern: Situation, Task, Action, Result. Focus on what you yourself did and what you learned.
- **How do you work in a team, including when people disagree?** Give a real example of listening, explaining your view politely and finding a solution everyone accepted.
- **How do you handle pressure or tight deadlines?** Explain how you set priorities, such as a task list or checking with your supervisor, and give one example of the outcome.
- **Where do you see yourself in two or three years?** Mention the skills you want to master and the responsibility you hope to take on, without promising things you cannot know.
- **What salary do you expect?** First research the pay range for the role and the local minimum wage where you would work. Give a range, then ask whether the figure is gross or net and which allowances apply.
- **When can you start?** Give a realistic date. If you are still employed, mention the notice period in your current contract so you do not break it.
- **Do you have any questions for us?** Ask about the contract type, working hours, base pay and allowances, the next selection step and when results are announced. Ask for the offer in writing.

CASR Part 61 item 61.23, as amended by PM 66/2017, requires a class 1 medical certificate for the commercial and airline transport pilot licences, and class 2 for private and student pilot licences.
