# How to become an architect in Indonesia: education, STRA licence, pay and safe applying

Becoming an architect in Indonesia takes an architecture degree, a two-year internship and a competency test for the STRA licence (Law 6/2017).

- Under Law 6/2017 as amended by Law 6/2023, you must hold an architect registration certificate (STRA) to practise as an architect in Indonesia.
- The Indonesian Architects Council issues the STRA after an internship of at least two years and a competency test; it is valid for five years (PP 15/2021).
- Architects who handle building approvals also need a Licence from the provincial government, valid only in the issuing province.
- Construction Decree 114/2024 sets the Assistant Architect SKK at level 7; architecture graduates with two years of work experience do not need the PPAr.
- A design test that is a full design for a real project with no contract, or an offer of a fast STRA without a competency test, is a warning sign.

## What does an architect do in Indonesia?

An architect designs buildings and their surroundings so they are safe, functional and fit to live in. Law 6/2017 Article 4 sets out the scope of practice: early studies, designing buildings and their surroundings, building conservation, site and building layout design, technical design documents, and supervising architectural aspects during construction. With other professions, architects can also work on urban planning, project and construction management, and community assistance.

- Preparing technical design documents with structural and MEP engineers.
- Directing drafters and modellers who produce the working drawings.
- Preparing documents for building approval.

- Presenting designs to clients and revising them based on feedback.

## How do you become a licensed architect (STRA) in Indonesia?

Under Law 6/2017 as amended by Law 6/2023, you must hold an architect registration certificate (STRA) to practise as an architect in Indonesia. Government Regulation 15/2021 Article 33 requires an internship of at least two continuous years after a professional-track architecture programme, or ten years of practice through recognition of prior learning, then a passed competency test. The Indonesian Architects Council issues the STRA, valid for five years.

## What does a typical architect job description look like?

Architect ads usually name the project type (houses, commercial buildings or districts), the stages from concept to supervision, software such as AutoCAD, Revit or SketchUp, and a portfolio request; senior posts often ask for an STRA. The description below is our own summary of common ads, not any company's vacancy. Minister of Manpower Circular M/6/HK.04/V/2025 point 2 prohibits employers from discriminating on any basis in recruitment.

- A bachelor's degree in architecture; senior posts usually ask for PPAr and an STRA.
- A design portfolio that shows process, not only final images.
- AutoCAD, Revit or other BIM software, and SketchUp or visualisation tools.
- Knowledge of local building and spatial planning rules.
- Able to communicate with clients, engineers and contractors.

## How much does an architect earn in Indonesia?

An employed architect may not be paid below the local minimum wage: the city or regency minimum (UMK) where one is set, otherwise the provincial minimum (UMP) (Government Regulation 36/2021 Articles 23(3) and 25). This floor covers under one year of service (Article 24), except in micro and small businesses, which set pay by agreement (Article 36). KarirAman has no architect figure yet. Income depends on the STRA, experience, city and employment status.

## What is the education route to becoming an architect in Indonesia?

According to the Indonesian Architects Council, the regular STRA route is a bachelor's degree in architecture plus the Professional Architecture Programme (PPAr) or a design-track master's, then an internship and a competency test run by the Council itself (PP 15/2021 Article 35). IAI stresses that this internship differs from a student work placement. SMK or diploma graduates usually work as drafters. For construction projects, architecture graduates can take the Assistant Architect SKK at level 7 (Construction Decree 114/2024).

## What is an architect's Licence in Indonesia and when do you need it?

The Licence is the document that makes an architect the responsible professional in building approvals and other permits. Under Government Regulation 15/2021 Articles 39 to 41, it is issued by the provincial government, valid only in that province, and requires a valid STRA plus a recommendation from the provincial IAI after a test on local spatial and architectural rules. Architects without a Licence must work with a licensed architect.

## How can you check that someone is a registered architect in Indonesia?

The Indonesian Architects Council runs an STRA Directory for finding registered architects. Use it when a recruiter or partner claims to be a registered architect (STRA holder); a Licence is a separate document issued by the provincial government. Law 6/2017 Article 12 says an STRA is revoked for a malpractice conviction or a serious ethics breach. The STRA application carries a fee set by the Council (PP 15/2021), so apply through the Council, never a broker.

## How do you build a portfolio and complete the architecture internship safely?

A strong architecture portfolio shows how you think: the client's problem, the options, the design decisions and the result. During the internship towards the STRA you work as a future architect, so make your status clear from the start.

1. Show process: sketches, massing studies and design reasons, not only final renders.
2. State your role honestly on team projects, and ask permission before showing client projects.
3. For the professional internship, look for a mentor through the internship information on the IAI website and ask for a written agreement on duration, tasks and allowance.
4. Keep a log of your internship hours and the work you handled. Government Regulation 15/2021 Article 33 requires an internship completion letter from the professional association for an STRA application.
5. Refuse requests to lend your name, STRA or Licence to projects you are not handling.

## What interview questions might you be asked for architect jobs?

Interview questions for architect jobs often cover the machines or equipment you have used, occupational safety and health, defects or faulty machines, meeting targets without cutting quality, and shift or site work. Each example below comes with why it is asked and how to answer it. The Ministry of Manpower warns that an instant chat interview without formal confirmation is one sign of a fake job.

**Which machines, equipment or engineering software have you operated?**

**Why they ask:** The company wants to know how quickly you can work safely on its line or site.

**How to answer:** Name the machines or tools, how long you used them, the basic maintenance you did and any certificate you actually hold.

**How do you apply health and safety rules where you work?**

**Why they ask:** Accidents hurt workers and can stop production.

**How to answer:** Name real habits: wearing protective equipment, following procedures, reporting hazards and stopping work when it is unsafe.

**What do you do if you find a defective product or a faulty machine?**

**Why they ask:** An ignored problem can lead to many rejects or an accident.

**How to answer:** Say you stop or set aside the item according to procedure, report to your supervisor and record what happened instead of hiding it.

**How do you meet production targets without lowering quality?**

**Why they ask:** Factories and projects need speed and results that meet the standard.

**How to answer:** Explain how you keep a steady pace, check your output regularly and tell your supervisor when a target is not realistic.

**Are you ready for shift work or work on a project site?**

**Why they ask:** Many plants and projects run day and night or far from town.

**How to answer:** Answer honestly, then ask about the rota, overtime records, transport and accommodation, and get them in writing before you travel.

**How do you read drawings and make sure the work meets the specification?**

**Why they ask:** Misreading a drawing can mean rework and high costs.

**How to answer:** Describe checking dimensions and materials, asking the supervisor about anything unclear and recording changes on site.

- **Tell me about yourself.** Answer in about a minute: where you are now in work or study, two experiences that matter for this job, then why you applied. Personal matters such as family status are not needed.
- **Why did you apply to this company?** Mention one or two real things you learned from the company's official website, such as its business or services, and link them to your skills.
- **Why are you interested in this role?** Pick two tasks from the job advert, describe similar things you have done, and say which part you most want to grow in.
- **What are your strengths?** Name one or two strengths and give short proof: the situation, what you did and the result.
- **What is your weakness?** Choose a real weakness that is not central to the job, then explain what you are doing to improve it.
- **Tell me about a problem at work or school that you solved.** Use the STAR pattern: Situation, Task, Action, Result. Focus on what you yourself did and what you learned.
- **How do you work in a team, including when people disagree?** Give a real example of listening, explaining your view politely and finding a solution everyone accepted.
- **How do you handle pressure or tight deadlines?** Explain how you set priorities, such as a task list or checking with your supervisor, and give one example of the outcome.
- **Where do you see yourself in two or three years?** Mention the skills you want to master and the responsibility you hope to take on, without promising things you cannot know.
- **What salary do you expect?** First research the pay range for the role and the local minimum wage where you would work. Give a range, then ask whether the figure is gross or net and which allowances apply.
- **When can you start?** Give a realistic date. If you are still employed, mention the notice period in your current contract so you do not break it.
- **Do you have any questions for us?** Ask about the contract type, working hours, base pay and allowances, the next selection step and when results are announced. Ask for the offer in writing.

## What are the common architect job scams?

Scam risk in architect vacancies is relatively low, but some patterns cause real harm. A design test that is a full design for a real project with no contract can be free work; the elucidation of Copyright Law 28/2014 Article 40 lists design and technical building drawings as protected architectural works. Also watch for competitions with no clear rules, offers of a fast STRA without a competency test, and state-owned company vacancies that ask for money.

For design competitions, check whether the organiser works with the Indonesian Institute of Architects, which has standard rules for architecture competitions. ## How is an architect different from a drafter, interior designer or civil engineer?

**Can an architecture graduate call themselves an architect in Indonesia?**

Not in the legal sense. Law 6/2023, which amended Law 6/2017, defines an architect as a person who meets the requirements and has been confirmed by the Indonesian Architects Council to practise, and practice requires an STRA. Bachelor's graduates usually work as designers or assistant architects while completing the Professional Architecture Programme (PPAr), the internship and the competency test.

**How long is an STRA valid?**

An STRA is valid for five years and can be renewed through continuing professional development (Law 6/2017 Article 10; Government Regulation 15/2021 Article 32). Under Law 6/2017 Article 11, an STRA also lapses if it expires without renewal, if the holder asks for it, if the holder dies or if the holder changes citizenship.

**Does a simple house have to be designed by an architect?**

No. Law 6/2023 inserted Article 6A into the Architects Law: designing simple buildings and traditional (adat) buildings does not have to be done by an architect. However, Government Regulation 15/2021 Article 30(6) says the building approval (PBG) process for such buildings must still be handled by an architect who holds a Licence.

**Is the architecture internship the same as a student work placement?**

No. The Indonesian Institute of Architects (IAI) explains that the internship under the Architects Law is professional architectural experience after the Professional Architecture Programme, not the work placement done during a bachelor's degree. According to the Indonesian Architects Council FAQ, the regular STRA route is a bachelor's degree plus PPAr or a design-track master's, then a 4,000-hour internship before the competency test.
