# Baristas in Indonesia: how to start, duties, pay and applying safely

## What does a barista do in Indonesia?

Baristas prepare coffee and other drinks to recipe, serve customers at the bar, and look after the espresso machine and grinder so every cup is consistent. Beyond brewing, baristas keep the bar clean, check stock and set up or close the outlet. In small outlets, the barista often works the till as well.

- Prepare espresso and coffee, tea or milk-based drinks to the recipe and measures.
- Set the grind, adjust the machine, and clean the machine and tools every shift.
- Take orders, explain the menu and serve customers at the bar.
- Keep the bar clean and food-safe, including how milk and other ingredients are stored.
- Record and check stock of beans, milk, syrups and cups.
- Set up the outlet at opening, then tidy up and count stock at closing.
- Operate the till or ordering app when asked.

## How do you become a barista in Indonesia without experience?

Barista work is not a licensed profession, so no licence is required to work in Indonesia. Vacancies usually ask for an SMA/SMK certificate, a friendly manner and willingness to work shifts; many outlets hire beginners and train them. A BNSP competency certificate, issued through a certification body (LSP) licensed by BNSP, is useful proof of skill but is rarely mandatory.

## What does a typical barista job description look like?

Barista vacancies in Indonesia usually look for quick, friendly people ready to work shifts, who will prepare drinks to standard recipes, look after the machines and keep the bar clean. - A senior high school (SMA) or vocational school (SMK) certificate; catering or hospitality majors are often a plus.
- Some outlets prefer barista experience, but many hire beginners and train them.
- Willing to work shifts, including very early mornings, nights, weekends and public holidays.
- Friendly, quick and able to stand for long periods.
- A barista training certificate or a BNSP competency certificate is a plus, not a general requirement.

## How much do baristas earn in Indonesia, and what are the hours?

No barista-specific pay data meets our standard yet, so that row in the table reads Not enough data. The floor is clear: under Government Regulation (PP) 36/2021 Articles 23 and 24, workers with less than one year of service may not be paid below the minimum wage where they work, which is the 2026 minimum wage (UMK) of the regency or city; micro and small businesses are exempt (Article 36). Normal working time is 40 hours a week under PP 35/2021 Article 21, and longer hours must be paid as overtime.

## Which education routes lead to barista work?

Many baristas start after SMA or SMK and learn on the job. The national competency standards are the SKKNI for coffee drinks in small coffee shops (Kepmenaker 32/2023), which includes brewing coffee with an espresso machine, and the SKKNI for cafés (Kepmenaker 16/2024). Competency tests are run by certification bodies (LSP) licensed by BNSP. Ministry of Manpower vocational training on Skillhub charged trainees nothing as of 7 October 2026.

## Can you work as a barista abroad?

Official routes for baristas abroad exist but are currently limited. Café and restaurant work in Japan falls under the Specified Skilled Worker (SSW) food service field, and the Immigration Services Agency of Japan (ISA) suspended new Certificates of Eligibility (COE) for that field from 13 April 2026. As of 10 September 2026, ISA was only processing COE applications received by 31 January 2026. For other countries, go only through a licensed agency (P3MI) or KP2MI and check vacancies on SISKOP2MI.

## Which work rights should baristas check?

Baristas often work on fixed-term contracts (PKWT) with shift rosters. Under PP 35/2021, normal working time is 40 hours a week (Article 21), a PKWT may not include probation (Article 12), and overtime must be paid (Article 27). Under Law 24/2011 Article 15, your employer must also register you with BPJS social security. Ask for your contract and shift roster in writing.

**Legal status:** the Labour Protection Law was approved by the DPR and the Government on 6 October 2026 but has not been promulgated and its text is not public. Until it takes effect, the rules on this page apply.

## What is the career path for a barista?

A common path runs from barista or bar crew to senior barista, head barista or shift supervisor, assistant outlet manager and restaurant supervisor. Some baristas move into barista training, coffee quality control, roasting, bartending or baking. Others open their own coffee shop, which means learning about business permits, such as a business number (NIB) through OSS, and about start-up costs.

Interview questions for barista jobs often cover food hygiene and safety, working through busy periods, handling guest complaints, shift work, and teamwork. **How to answer:** Name your role, how the team shared tasks and one example where good coordination saved an order or an event.

**How do you keep drinks consistent?**

**Why they ask:** Customers return for the same taste every time.

**How to answer:** Explain how you follow recipes and measurements, calibrate equipment, taste and note adjustments.

- **Tell me about yourself.** Answer in about a minute: where you are now in work or study, two experiences that matter for this job, then why you applied. Personal matters such as family status are not needed.
- **Why did you apply to this company?** Mention one or two real things you learned from the company's official website, such as its business or services, and link them to your skills.
- **Why are you interested in this role?** Pick two tasks from the job advert, describe similar things you have done, and say which part you most want to grow in.
- **What are your strengths?** Name one or two strengths and give short proof: the situation, what you did and the result.
- **What is your weakness?** Choose a real weakness that is not central to the job, then explain what you are doing to improve it.
- **Tell me about a problem at work or school that you solved.** Use the STAR pattern: Situation, Task, Action, Result. Focus on what you yourself did and what you learned.
- **How do you work in a team, including when people disagree?** Give a real example of listening, explaining your view politely and finding a solution everyone accepted.
- **How do you handle pressure or tight deadlines?** Explain how you set priorities, such as a task list or checking with your supervisor, and give one example of the outcome.
- **Where do you see yourself in two or three years?** Mention the skills you want to master and the responsibility you hope to take on, without promising things you cannot know.
- **What salary do you expect?** First research the pay range for the role and the local minimum wage where you would work. Give a range, then ask whether the figure is gross or net and which allowances apply.
- **When can you start?** Give a realistic date. If you are still employed, mention the notice period in your current contract so you do not break it.
- **Do you have any questions for us?** Ask about the contract type, working hours, base pay and allowances, the next selection step and when results are announced. Ask for the offer in writing.

## Which job scams target barista applicants?

Fee scams still appear in barista vacancies: applicants are asked to pay for a barista class, a uniform or equipment as a condition of being hired. Indonesia's Ministry of Manpower says a fee in recruitment is almost certainly a scam. Also be wary of offers of barista work in Japan with a quick departure, because new COEs for the SSW food service field have not been issued since 13 April 2026.

- You are asked to pay for a barista class or training as a condition of being hired.
- You are asked to pay for a uniform or equipment before your first day.

Look for barista vacancies on coffee chains' official careers pages or accounts, the Ministry of Manpower's Karirhub portal and local manpower office (Disnaker) job fairs. Check the outlet's address before the interview, and make sure the interview takes place at a real outlet or office, not only by chat. Never pay to take part in a selection. **Do you need a certificate to work as a barista?**

No, it is not required. Barista work is not a licensed profession, so outlets may hire SMA/SMK graduates without a certificate and train them.
