## What does a bartender do in Indonesia?

A bartender mixes and serves drinks at the bar, both alcoholic drinks such as cocktails, beer and wine and non-alcoholic drinks. Indonesia's national hotel competency standard (Ministerial Decree 125/2024) includes bar units such as operating a bar, cleaning the bar area, serving cocktails, running a beer storage system and providing responsible service of alcohol. Bartenders also record stock, prepare ingredients and handle payments.

## What do you need to become a bartender in Indonesia, including the age rule?

Bartender ads in Indonesia usually ask for an SMK certificate in hospitality or catering up to a tourism diploma, bar or cafe experience, basic drinks knowledge, English for foreign guests and willingness to work nights and weekends. This is not work for children: Law 13/2003 Article 74 bans involving children in work connected with the alcohol trade, and Article 1 defines a child as anyone under 18.

A genuine bartender ad names the venue and its address (a hotel, restaurant or bar), the hours and shift pattern, the drinks menu and how the service charge is shared. ## How much does a bartender earn in Indonesia?

An employed bartender may not be paid below the minimum wage: the city or regency minimum (UMK) where set, otherwise the provincial minimum (UMP) (Government Regulation 36/2021 Articles 23(3) and 25), for under one year of service (Article 24), except in micro and small businesses, which pay by agreement (Article 36). In certain businesses, a service charge must be shared with workers after reserves for loss, damage and staff development (Article 13). KarirAman has no bartender figure yet.

## What is the training and certification route for a bartender in Indonesia?

The usual route is an SMK in hospitality or culinary arts, then training at a course provider, a government training centre (BLK) or a tourism school. The SMK Directorate lists Bartender and Bar Attendant occupational schemes, and a BNSP-licensed tourism certification body also runs a Bartender scheme. The national hotel standard (Ministerial Decree 125/2024) also contains bar units, such as operating a bar and serving cocktails. Certificates can be checked on BNSP's certificate checker.

## Can a bartender work on a cruise ship or abroad safely?

Yes, but only through official channels. Government Regulation 22/2022 Article 8 requires companies that place Indonesian merchant ship crew abroad to hold a placement licence (SIP3MI), and official overseas vacancies are listed on SISKOP2MI. In July 2026 the Transport Ministry reminded seafarers to leave only through official agencies to prevent trafficking. Working in a bar abroad on a visit or tourist visa is a scam sign, according to the Ministry of Manpower.

## What are the working conditions and rights of a bartender?

Bartenders often work nights, weekends and public holidays. Law 13/2003 Article 76 requires employers who have women working between 23.00 and 07.00 to provide nutritious food and drink and protect their safety and decency, and to provide transport for women travelling to or from work between 23.00 and 05.00. Cash shortages cannot be deducted at will: Government Regulation 36/2021 Article 63 needs a basis in the contract, company rules or collective agreement.

**Legal status:** the Labour Protection Law was approved by the DPR and the Government on 6 October 2026 but has not been promulgated and its text is not public. Until it takes effect, the rules on this page apply.

## How do you apply for a cruise ship bartender job safely?

Bar crew on foreign cruise ships work as ship crew, and their placement is regulated as the placement of Indonesian migrant workers. Understand the cost rules in this order before you meet any agent.

1. Law 18/2017 Article 30(1): Indonesian migrant workers cannot be charged placement costs.
2. Regulation P2MI 17/2025: the employer bears placement costs, and the worker may be charged only costs written and itemised in the Placement Agreement.
3. Any request for money outside that document, especially in cash or to a personal account, is a red flag.

According to the ILO's guidance on the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC 2006), no recruitment or placement fees may be charged to seafarers other than the medical certificate, seafarer's book and passport; visa costs fall on the shipowner. Before you apply:

1. Look up the placement company in SISKOP2MI's list of licensed P3MI and check that it is active and not on the sanctions list.
2. Match the vacancy against SISKOP2MI's official vacancy list.
3. Read the whole sea employment agreement and Placement Agreement before signing, and keep copies.
4. Do not hand your original passport to a recruiter; get your passport yourself using the passport guide under related guides.
5. If you are promised departure on a visit visa or told to wait in a holding house, stop and report it.

**What is the minimum age for buying alcohol in Indonesian bars?**

Trade Ministry Regulation 20/M-DAG/PER/4/2014 Article 15 says alcohol sold for drinking on the premises, including in hotels, restaurants and bars, may only be served to customers aged 21 or over who show an identity card. Presidential Regulation 74/2013 Article 7 also lets regional heads restrict where alcohol is sold. Ask how ID checks work at your venue.

**Do cruise ship bartenders have to pay an agent?**

Law 18/2017 Article 30(1) says Indonesian migrant workers cannot be charged placement costs. Regulation P2MI 17/2025 makes the employer bear placement costs, and the worker may be charged only costs written and itemised in the Placement Agreement. Any request for money outside that document, especially in cash or to a personal account, is a red flag. Check the agency on SISKOP2MI.

Not always. A genuine bar job names the venue, the hours and the work of mixing or serving drinks.
