The work covers market research, mapping potential partners, making first contact, preparing proposals and partnership models, negotiating, then handing signed partners over to the team that manages the day-to-day relationship.

## What do you need to become a business development executive in Indonesia?

Business development is not a licensed profession. Ads usually ask for a diploma or degree, research, proposal writing, presentation and negotiation skills, and sales or partnership experience for senior roles. ## How much does business development pay in Indonesia, and can it be commission only?

If you are an employee, commission alone may not take your pay below the minimum wage: employers may not pay less than it (Law 13/2003 Article 88E(2) as inserted by Law 6/2023; Government Regulation 36/2021 Article 23(3)). It is the reference for less than one year of service, after which pay follows the wage structure and scale (Article 24). Micro and small businesses are exempt (Article 36). The rule protects employees, not genuine partners, so get your status in writing. We have no qualifying pay data for this role yet.

## Which education routes lead to business development?

Many business development executives hold degrees in management, business, economics, communication or a technical field that fits the product, and some hold marketing diplomas. A common route is to start in sales, as an account executive or a management trainee, then move into partnerships. Marketing competency certification through a BNSP-licensed body can help prove your skills but is not required.

## What is the difference between business development, account executives and field sales?

Business development opens new opportunities such as partners, channels or markets, often with a longer time horizon. An account executive sells to and looks after business clients through contracts and renewals, while field sales staff sell directly to shops or consumers in a set area. In small companies one person may do all three, so read the duties and how performance is judged.

## How is business development performance usually measured?

Business development performance is usually measured by the number and quality of opportunities opened, such as partners contacted, meetings, proposals sent, agreements signed and the business value of those partnerships. Ask for targets and how they are counted in writing from the start, including what happens if a target is missed and when commission or bonuses are paid.

## Is a business development executive an employee or a partner?

It depends on the agreement, not the job title. BD vacancies sometimes offer business partner, agent or reseller contracts that pay commission only. Before signing, check that the contract sets out the commission formula, who pays costs such as transport and samples, and whether you are free to set your own working time. If the company sets your hours, gives daily instructions and pays you, those are signs of employment (Law 13/2003 Article 1 point 15). This applies until the Labour Protection Law, approved by the DPR and the Government on 6 October 2026, takes effect.

- **Why are you interested in this role?** Pick two tasks from the job advert, describe similar things you have done, and say which part you most want to grow in.
- **What are your strengths?** Name one or two strengths and give short proof: the situation, what you did and the result.
- **What is your weakness?** Choose a real weakness that is not central to the job, then explain what you are doing to improve it.
- **Tell me about a problem at work or school that you solved.** Use the STAR pattern: Situation, Task, Action, Result. Focus on what you yourself did and what you learned.
- **How do you work in a team, including when people disagree?** Give a real example of listening, explaining your view politely and finding a solution everyone accepted.
- **How do you handle pressure or tight deadlines?** Explain how you set priorities, such as a task list or checking with your supervisor, and give one example of the outcome.
- **Where do you see yourself in two or three years?** Mention the skills you want to master and the responsibility you hope to take on, without promising things you cannot know.
- **What salary do you expect?** First research the pay range for the role and the local minimum wage where you would work. Give a range, then ask whether the figure is gross or net and which allowances apply.
- **When can you start?** Give a realistic date. If you are still employed, mention the notice period in your current contract so you do not break it.

**Can a business development job pay commission only?**

Not if you are an employee. Commission may not take your pay below the minimum wage, because employers may not pay less than it (Law 13/2003 Article 88E(2) as inserted by Law 6/2023; Government Regulation 36/2021 Article 23(3)).
