## What does a cashier do in Indonesia?

Cashiers take payments from customers in shops, minimarkets, supermarkets and restaurants. The core of the job is scanning items, accepting cash or digital payments, giving change and receipts, and reconciling the cash drawer with the system at each shift change. Between transactions, cashiers in Indonesia often restock shelves, clean the checkout area and answer shoppers' questions.

- Scan items, check prices and apply current promotions or vouchers.
- Give the correct change and receipt.
- Count and reconcile the cash drawer at the start and end of each shift.
- Report cash shortages, voided transactions and returns as the store requires.

## What do you need to become a cashier in Indonesia?

Cashier ads in Indonesia usually ask for a senior high school (SMA) or vocational school (SMK) certificate, accuracy with numbers, honesty, a friendly manner and willingness to work shifts, including weekends. Cashiering is not a licensed profession like health work, but some employers ask for a police clearance certificate (SKCK) and a health certificate. Experience with a till helps, and many shops hire school leavers and train them on the job.

## What does a typical cashier job description look like?

Cashier ads in Indonesia usually state the store location, the shift pattern, responsibility for the cash drawer and extra duties such as tidying shelves. At small businesses the post is often advertised as cashier and admin (admin kasir): besides taking payments, you prepare the daily sales and takings summary for the owner. Check whether the ad explains the cash-shortage policy and who covers it, because this is often raised only after you are hired.

## How much does a cashier earn in Indonesia?

A cashier's pay must at least match the 2026 minimum wage (UMK) of the regency or city where you work: PP 36/2021 Article 23 bans paying below the minimum wage, which applies to workers with less than one year of service. We do not show a cashier-specific figure yet, because no data meets our standard. ## Which education routes lead to cashier work?

The usual route is finishing SMA or SMK and then being trained by the shop. The modern retail competency standard (SKKNI Ritel Modern, Kepmenaker 16/2018) includes units on point-of-sale procedures and completing transactions, which can be assessed at an LSP licensed by BNSP, the national certification board. The Ministry of Manpower also runs free vocational training through its Skillhub portal, including a business and management track.

## What are the working conditions and rights of a cashier in Indonesia?

Cashiers usually work rotating shifts on their feet and are fully responsible for the cash drawer during a shift. PP 35/2021 Article 21 sets working time at 40 hours a week, and Article 12 bans probation in fixed-term contracts. Law 24/2011 Article 15 requires employers to register their workers with BPJS social security. These contract rules may change once the new Labour Protection Law approved by parliament in October 2026 takes effect.

## What is the career path for a cashier?

A typical retail path starts as a cashier or store crew member, then head cashier handling the daily takings, assistant store manager and store manager; in restaurants, cashiers can move up to restaurant supervisor. Cashiers who are careful with money can also move into store admin, accounting staff, bank teller or fuel station posts, or hospital cashier and admin work. A clean attendance record and few cash shortages are usually what count most when you are considered for promotion.

## How do you apply for a cashier job safely?

Applying safely for a cashier job in Indonesia means confirming the shop is real, paying nothing during recruitment and keeping your original documents. You can take these steps before and after the interview.

1. Look for the same vacancy on the retail chain's official careers page or verified social media account. If you cannot find it, ask at the nearest branch.
2. Check the employer's registered company name in AHU, then match it with the address of the store or office that invited you.
3. Refuse any request for a deposit, uniform money or a training fee, whatever the amount.
4. Bring a photocopy of your diploma, not the original, unless you only show the original and take it straight back.

6. Read the contract before signing: contract type, wage, working hours and the cash-shortage rule should all be in writing.

**Why they ask:** The interviewer wants to see how you open a conversation and read people's needs.

- **What are your strengths?** Name one or two strengths and give short proof: the situation, what you did and the result.
- **What is your weakness?** Choose a real weakness that is not central to the job, then explain what you are doing to improve it.
- **Tell me about a problem at work or school that you solved.** Use the STAR pattern: Situation, Task, Action, Result. Focus on what you yourself did and what you learned.
- **How do you work in a team, including when people disagree?** Give a real example of listening, explaining your view politely and finding a solution everyone accepted.
- **How do you handle pressure or tight deadlines?** Explain how you set priorities, such as a task list or checking with your supervisor, and give one example of the outcome.
- **Where do you see yourself in two or three years?** Mention the skills you want to master and the responsibility you hope to take on, without promising things you cannot know.
- **What salary do you expect?** First research the pay range for the role and the local minimum wage where you would work. Give a range, then ask whether the figure is gross or net and which allowances apply.
- **When can you start?** Give a realistic date. If you are still employed, mention the notice period in your current contract so you do not break it.

## Which job scams target cashier applicants?

Fake cashier vacancies often use the name of a well-known minimarket or supermarket chain and then ask for a deposit, uniform money or a training fee before you start. The Ministry of Manpower says a fee in recruitment is almost certainly a scam. Another trick is demanding your original diploma as security, although Minister of Manpower Circular M/5/HK.04.00/V/2025 bans employers from holding workers' diplomas and personal documents.
