## How much does an employed content writer earn in Indonesia, and how are freelancers paid?

An employed content writer in Indonesia with less than one year of service must be paid at least the local minimum wage under Government Regulation 36/2021 Articles 23 and 24. Micro and small businesses are exempt and set wages by agreement within limits (Article 36). Freelance writers are paid per piece, per word or per project under their contract. ## Which education routes lead to content writing in Indonesia?

Content writers can come from any degree; communication, literature, journalism and marketing are often mentioned in ads, and your portfolio is the main proof of skill. Our search of the Ministry of Manpower's competency standards (SKKNI) register on 8 October 2026 found no standard specifically for content writers. The nearest are the advertising standard (Decree 101/2023) and the book publishing standard (Decree 232/2024), and BNSP lists a licensed writers and editors certification body.

## Who owns test articles and commissioned writing in Indonesia?

Law 28/2014 Article 36 says that, unless agreed otherwise, the author and copyright holder of work made in an employment relationship or on commission is the person who made it. That is why writing contracts usually transfer the rights once you are paid. A test article that is unpaid and not assigned to the client may not be published without your permission, because Article 9 requires permission to publish or reproduce.

## Can content writers in Indonesia use AI tools?

Yes, as long as it fits the client's rules and you stay responsible for what you submit. Minister of Communication and Informatics Circular 9/2023 on AI ethics lists transparency, credibility and accountability, and intellectual property among its values; the circular is guidance. Ask whether the client requires you to disclose AI use, check every fact and source, and never copy other people's writing.

## What should a freelance writing contract include?

A good freelance writing contract protects you from having your work used without being paid. Make sure it states:

1. The scope: type of writing, word count, topics and how many revisions the rate includes.
2. The delivery deadline and the payment deadline, including what happens if the client pays late.
3. When copyright passes to the client, for example once payment is complete. Law 28/2014 Article 36 leaves copyright in commissioned work with its maker unless agreed otherwise.
4. Whether your name will appear. Law 28/2014 Article 5 gives authors the moral right to have their name included or left off, including when you ghostwrite.
5. The client's rules on AI use and sources.
6. How the project can be cancelled and payment for work already finished.

## How do you apply for a content writer job safely?

1. Look for the same vacancy on the official site of the company, media outlet or agency, or on the Ministry of Manpower's Karirhub portal.
2. Check the registered company name in AHU and make sure the recruiter's e-mail uses the company domain.
3. Never pay a registration, writer account, training or deposit fee.
4. Share your portfolio as links or a watermarked PDF, not as long new pieces written for free.
5. Refuse orders for online gambling sites or content that deceives readers.

- **Why did you apply to this company?** Mention one or two real things you learned from the company's official website, such as its business or services, and link them to your skills.
- **Why are you interested in this role?** Pick two tasks from the job advert, describe similar things you have done, and say which part you most want to grow in.
- **What are your strengths?** Name one or two strengths and give short proof: the situation, what you did and the result.
- **What is your weakness?** Choose a real weakness that is not central to the job, then explain what you are doing to improve it.
- **Tell me about a problem at work or school that you solved.** Use the STAR pattern: Situation, Task, Action, Result. Focus on what you yourself did and what you learned.
- **How do you work in a team, including when people disagree?** Give a real example of listening, explaining your view politely and finding a solution everyone accepted.
- **How do you handle pressure or tight deadlines?** Explain how you set priorities, such as a task list or checking with your supervisor, and give one example of the outcome.
- **Where do you see yourself in two or three years?** Mention the skills you want to master and the responsibility you hope to take on, without promising things you cannot know.
- **What salary do you expect?** First research the pay range for the role and the local minimum wage where you would work. Give a range, then ask whether the figure is gross or net and which allowances apply.
- **When can you start?** Give a realistic date. If you are still employed, mention the notice period in your current contract so you do not break it.

## Which job scams target content writers in Indonesia?

One pattern to watch for is online work that pays a little at first, then asks for a fee, an account purchase or a deposit to unlock more tasks. OJK's anti-scam task force (Satgas PASTI) has described this deposit pattern for liking posts and rating tasks, including versions that borrow a famous marketing firm's name; treat article-writing offers that work the same way as suspect. Also watch for unpaid tests that get published and orders to write for gambling sites.

**Do companies in Indonesia have to pay for writing tests?**

We found no rule that requires writing tests to be paid. But a test article is still your work: Law 28/2014 Article 36 says copyright in commissioned work belongs to its maker unless agreed otherwise, and Article 9 requires permission to publish it. Ask for a short test, ask whether the piece will be used, and refuse repeated tests that are really unpaid work.
