## What does a data analyst do?

A data analyst turns raw data into answers that people can act on. The work covers collecting and cleaning data, writing SQL queries, building dashboards, analysing trends and explaining findings to business teams. Data analysts work in technology companies, banking, retail, logistics and government agencies.

## What do you need to become a data analyst in Indonesia?

No professional licence is required; employers judge your SQL, spreadsheet and statistics skills and how well you explain findings. The Ministry of Manpower set the national Data Analytics competency standard in Decree 200 of 2021, which is still in force. Under Government Regulation 10/2018, work competency certification is done by certification bodies (LSP) licensed by BNSP; check the licence in BNSP's LSP directory.

## What does a typical data analyst job description look like?

Data analyst vacancies usually ask for SQL and spreadsheet skills, experience with visualisation tools, basic statistics and the ability to explain results to non-technical people. Python or R is often listed as a plus. We wrote the description below ourselves from common advertising patterns. It is not a vacancy from any company, so there is no apply button.

## How much does a data analyst earn in Indonesia?

## What degree do you need to be a data analyst in Indonesia?

The most common route is a degree in statistics, mathematics, informatics, economics or industrial engineering, followed by deeper SQL and visualisation skills. Government training is available through the Ministry of Manpower's Skillhub, which its official site describes as free for participants, and the Digital Talent Scholarship of the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs. ## What are a data analyst's duties when handling personal data?

Data analysts often handle personal data about customers or staff. Personal Data Protection Law 27/2022 requires data controllers to keep personal data confidential (Article 36) and prevent unauthorised access (Article 39). In practice, follow your company's access rules, do not copy data to personal devices, and use anonymised data in your portfolio. The Ministry of Manpower has also set a Personal Data Protection competency standard (Decree 103 of 2023).

## What does a data analyst's career path look like?

A typical path runs from junior data analyst to data analyst, senior analyst and analytics team lead. The path can branch into data science, data engineering (building data pipelines), business analysis, AI engineering, financial analysis or business intelligence management; in hospitals, data analysts often work with medical records officers. Asking the right questions, building trusted metrics and explaining findings to leaders matter as much as technical skill.

Interview questions for data analyst jobs often cover a project you are proud of, learning new tools, explaining technical things, testing your work, handling mistakes after release, and data security. **Why they ask:** The interviewer wants to separate your contribution from the team's.

**How to answer:** Explain the problem, the part you did yourself, the tools and the result. Share a portfolio only if it does not break a former employer's confidentiality.

**Why they ask:** Technology changes fast, so the ability to learn is valued.

**How to answer:** Give a real example: reading the official documentation, building a small project, then applying it at work.

**Why they ask:** How you take responsibility matters more than never making mistakes.

**How to answer:** Explain that you tell the team at once, fix or roll back the change, find the root cause and prevent a repeat.

**How do you protect data and system access?**

**Why they ask:** Careless access can open the door to data leaks.

**How to answer:** Mention least privilege, never sharing passwords, keeping systems updated and refusing requests for OTP codes or passwords by chat, even from someone claiming to be a manager.

**How do you check data quality before analysis or model training?**

**Why they ask:** Bad data leads to misleading conclusions or models.

**How to answer:** Mention checks for missing values, outliers, the source and time range and possible bias, and how you document cleaning decisions.

- **Tell me about yourself.** Answer in about a minute: where you are now in work or study, two experiences that matter for this job, then why you applied. Personal matters such as family status are not needed.
- **Why did you apply to this company?** Mention one or two real things you learned from the company's official website, such as its business or services, and link them to your skills.
- **Why are you interested in this role?** Pick two tasks from the job advert, describe similar things you have done, and say which part you most want to grow in.
- **What are your strengths?** Name one or two strengths and give short proof: the situation, what you did and the result.
- **What is your weakness?** Choose a real weakness that is not central to the job, then explain what you are doing to improve it.
- **Tell me about a problem at work or school that you solved.** Use the STAR pattern: Situation, Task, Action, Result. Focus on what you yourself did and what you learned.
- **How do you work in a team, including when people disagree?** Give a real example of listening, explaining your view politely and finding a solution everyone accepted.
- **How do you handle pressure or tight deadlines?** Explain how you set priorities, such as a task list or checking with your supervisor, and give one example of the outcome.
- **Where do you see yourself in two or three years?** Mention the skills you want to master and the responsibility you hope to take on, without promising things you cannot know.
- **What salary do you expect?** First research the pay range for the role and the local minimum wage where you would work. Give a range, then ask whether the figure is gross or net and which allowances apply.
- **When can you start?** Give a realistic date. If you are still employed, mention the notice period in your current contract so you do not break it.
- **Do you have any questions for us?** Ask about the contract type, working hours, base pay and allowances, the next selection step and when results are announced. Ask for the offer in writing.

## Which job scams target data analysts?

A common scam aimed at data job seekers is work-from-home data entry or processing that pays a little at first, then asks for deposits for further tasks; OJK's anti-scam task force describes this pattern. Also watch for registration or certification fees, chat-only interviews, and well-paid data jobs in Cambodia or Myanmar that require you to travel as a tourist.

## Where can you find safe data analyst vacancies?

Look for vacancies on official company careers pages, the Ministry of Manpower's Karirhub portal and the state-owned enterprise careers directory. A normal hiring process usually includes an SQL test or case study and an interview with the data team, using a company email domain. **Does a data analyst need a statistics or computer science degree?**

No law requires a particular major. Data analyst vacancies often ask for a degree in statistics, mathematics, informatics, economics or another quantitative field, but real skills matter more.
