A data scientist uses statistics, programming and machine learning to build models that predict, group or recommend things from data. The work covers framing the business problem, preparing and cleaning data, building and evaluating models, then working with engineers so the models can be used and monitored. Results can be product features, demand forecasts or fraud detection. Data science is not a licensed profession. Employers judge your statistics, Python or R and SQL, your grasp of machine learning and how you explain results. The official reference is the Artificial Intelligence: Data Science standard (Decree 299 of 2020), with 21 units from setting business objectives to maintaining models and reporting on the project. Certification through a BNSP-licensed body is optional. ## What does a typical data scientist job description look like? A data analyst explains what happened and why, using SQL, spreadsheets, reports and dashboards. A data scientist builds statistical or machine learning models to predict and help automate decisions, which needs deeper mathematics and programming. The official references differ too: the Data Analytics standard (Decree 200 of 2021) for analysts and the Data Science standard (Decree 299 of 2020) for data scientists. A data engineer is different again: they build and maintain the data pipelines and storage both roles rely on. ## Which personal data rules should a data scientist know? Law 27/2022 Article 34 requires the data controller, usually the company, to carry out an impact assessment for high-risk processing, such as automated decisions with significant effects, systematic scoring or large-scale processing; a data scientist may be asked to help prepare it. Article 10 gives people the right to object to decisions based solely on automated processing. Collection of personal data must be limited and specific, and processing must fit its purpose (Article 16(2)(a) and (b)), so use only the data you need. ## What does a data scientist's career path look like? The usual path runs from junior or associate data scientist to data scientist, senior data scientist, and lead or principal who sets the modelling direction. It can branch into machine learning engineering, AI engineering, data team management or applied research. BNSP schemes also separate levels, for example Associate Data Scientist (Ilmuwan Data Muda) and Data Scientist (Ilmuwan Data). ## How can you tell a data scientist vacancy from a data analyst vacancy? Job titles often overlap. The table sums up the usual differences between the two roles; read the duties in the ad to see which one the employer really wants.
