# Database administrators (DBAs) in Indonesia: duties, requirements, pay and applying safely

## What does a database administrator do in Indonesia?

A database administrator, or DBA, makes sure a company's databases are available, fast and secure. The work covers installing and updating database systems, scheduling and testing backups, recovering data after failures, tuning slow queries and indexes, and managing user access. Indonesia's Data Management standard (SKKNI, Decree 268/2020) includes the units Administering Databases and Data Back-Up and Restore.

## What do you need to become a database administrator in Indonesia?

Database administration is not a licensed profession. Employers usually ask for a D3 diploma or bachelor's degree in computing, strong SQL, experience with relational or non-relational database systems, and an understanding of backup, replication and security. The competency reference is the Data Management standard (SKKNI, Decree 268/2020), in force on 8 October 2026. A BNSP Database Administrator scheme exists, but the certificate is not required.

## What does a typical database administrator job description look like?

DBA ads in Indonesia usually name the database systems in use, responsibility for backup and recovery, performance monitoring and access management, and willingness to handle incidents outside working hours or in night maintenance windows. Many ask for several years of experience. We wrote the description below ourselves from common advertising patterns. It is not a vacancy from any company, so there is no apply button.

## How much does a database administrator earn in Indonesia?

We do not show a DBA-specific pay figure yet. There is no official pay scale, no verified-vacancy data with enough samples and no third-party ad data that separates the DBA role. What is certain is that PP 36/2021 Article 23(3) bans paying employees below the minimum wage, and Article 24 makes it the reference for workers with less than one year of service. The table below shows only the data that exists.

## Which education routes lead to database administration?

The usual route is a D3 diploma or bachelor's degree in informatics, information systems or computer engineering, then a first job as a developer, IT support technician or data analyst before taking charge of production databases. The programming standard (SKKNI, Decree 282/2016) includes the units Using SQL and Applying Database Access. As of 8 October 2026, BNSP's directory lists Database Administrator and Database Programmer schemes at an actively licensed body.

## Which personal data security duties does a DBA carry out?

Law 27/2022 requires data controllers, usually the employer, to keep personal data confidential (Article 36) and to prevent unauthorised access with a reliable security system (Article 39); Article 52 applies these duties to data processors too. DBAs carry them out through least-privilege access, encryption, audit logs and tested backups. If a breach happens, Article 46 requires written notice within 3 x 24 hours.

## How long can a DBA work overtime during maintenance, and what are the rules?

PP 35/2021 Article 26 caps overtime at four hours a day and 18 hours a week, excluding overtime on weekly rest days or public holidays. Article 28 requires an order from the employer and your consent in writing or digitally, and the employer must keep a record of overtime listing the workers and how long they worked. For night-time database maintenance, keep the overtime order, the maintenance schedule and your own log of hours.

**Legal status:** the Labour Protection Law was approved by the DPR and the Government on 6 October 2026 but has not been promulgated and its text is not public. Until it takes effect, the rules on this page apply.

## What is the career path for a database administrator?

A typical path starts as a junior DBA or database operations staff, then DBA, senior DBA, up to database architect or head of data infrastructure. Some DBAs move into data engineering, information security or personal data protection roles; Indonesia's Personal Data Protection Expertise standard (SKKNI, Decree 103/2023) includes units such as impact assessment and responding to personal data breaches.

## What is safe to share in a DBA job test?

A DBA test checks how you work, not what is inside your former employer's database. Use this list to separate fair requests from dangerous ones.

- **Tell me about a problem at work or school that you solved.** Use the STAR pattern: Situation, Task, Action, Result. Focus on what you yourself did and what you learned.
- **How do you work in a team, including when people disagree?** Give a real example of listening, explaining your view politely and finding a solution everyone accepted.
- **How do you handle pressure or tight deadlines?** Explain how you set priorities, such as a task list or checking with your supervisor, and give one example of the outcome.
- **Where do you see yourself in two or three years?** Mention the skills you want to master and the responsibility you hope to take on, without promising things you cannot know.
- **What salary do you expect?** First research the pay range for the role and the local minimum wage where you would work. Give a range, then ask whether the figure is gross or net and which allowances apply.
- **When can you start?** Give a realistic date. If you are still employed, mention the notice period in your current contract so you do not break it.

## Which job scams target database administrator applicants?

Besides training or certification fees before selection, which the Ministry of Manpower calls almost certainly a scam, DBA applicants should watch for requests for data and access. Examples are recruiters who ask for a data dump from your former employer, your passwords or OTP codes, or installing an APK file sent by chat. Law 27/2022 Article 65 bars unlawfully disclosing other people's personal data, so refuse.

## Where can you find safe database administrator vacancies in Indonesia?

Look for DBA vacancies on companies' official careers pages, the Ministry of Manpower's Karirhub portal and the state-owned enterprise careers directory. A fair DBA test uses a sample database, for example fixing a slow query or designing a backup schedule, and never asks for access to a live system. **What is the difference between a DBA and a data engineer?**

A DBA looks after the database system itself: installation, backups, recovery, performance and access rights, so that the applications using it keep running. A data engineer builds pipelines that move and process data from many sources into a warehouse for analysis. No. Database administration is not a licensed profession, so a competency certificate is optional. As of 8 October 2026, BNSP's directory lists Database Administrator and Database Programmer schemes at an actively licensed certification body.
