# Drivers in Indonesia: licences, duties, pay, driving hours and applying safely

## What does a driver do in Indonesia?

Drivers (sopir) carry passengers or goods safely and on time. Before setting off, a driver checks the vehicle and its documents and plans the route, then logs the trip, fuel and expenses while on duty. Delivery drivers often help with loading and unloading, while office or private drivers take managers and guests where they need to go.

## What licence do you need to be a driver in Indonesia?

The key requirement for a driver is a licence (SIM) that matches the vehicle. Law 22/2009 Article 80 sets SIM A for cars with a permitted weight up to 3,500 kilograms, SIM B I for heavier vehicles and SIM B II for tractor units or vehicles towing trailers. The minimum age is 17 for SIM A, 20 for B I and 21 for B II (Article 81). Public transport drivers need a public (Umum) licence (Article 82).

## What does a typical driver job description look like?

Driver ads in Indonesia usually look for experienced holders of the right licence who know the area and keep to time. Valet parking staff at hotels and malls are often hired through vendors; ask about the damage rule if a guest's car is scratched, because wage deductions for damages are allowed only if the contract, company regulations or collective agreement provide for them (PP 36/2021 Article 63). Tourist buses usually run with a driver and an assistant (kernet) or bus crew who help passengers and luggage.

## How much do drivers earn in Indonesia?

No pay data specific to private, truck or bus drivers meets our standard yet, so that row in the table reads Not enough data. The floor is clear: under Government Regulation (PP) 36/2021 Articles 23 and 24, workers with less than one year of service may not be paid below the minimum wage where they work, which is the 2026 minimum wage (UMK) of the regency or city. Family drivers are covered by Law 2/2026 on domestic workers, with pay set by agreement. Ask in writing whether trip money and per-trip incentives count as wages.

## Which education routes lead to driving work?

Drivers need no specific diploma, but they must pass the licence tests. Law 22/2009 Article 77 says driving competence can be gained through training or self-study, while future public transport drivers must complete public transport driver training. The Motor Vehicle Driving SKKNI (Kepmenaker 151/2026) includes units such as anticipatory driving and family driver service. Moving from SIM A to SIM B I requires holding a SIM A for at least 12 months (Article 81).

## Can Indonesian drivers work in Japan?

Drivers can work abroad through a legal route, but the bar is high. Japan includes automobile transportation, meaning truck, bus and taxi drivers, in the Specified Skilled Worker (SSW) scheme. According to the Immigration Services Agency of Japan's official explainer revised on 17 July 2026, applicants must pass the SSW skills test, hold a Japanese driving licence and reach a set level of Japanese, higher for bus and taxi drivers. Go only through a licensed agency (P3MI) or KP2MI.

## How many hours a day may a driver work in Indonesia?

For public vehicle drivers, Law 22/2009 Article 90 limits working time to 8 hours a day, requires a break of at least half an hour after 4 hours of continuous driving, and in certain cases allows up to 12 hours including a one-hour break. For other drivers, normal working time generally follows PP 35/2021 Article 21, which is 40 hours a week, and extra hours must be paid as overtime (Article 27).

**Legal status:** the Labour Protection Law was approved by the DPR and the Government on 6 October 2026 but has not been promulgated and its text is not public. Until it takes effect, the rules on this page apply.

## What is the career path for a driver?

Drivers usually move up through licences: from SIM A to SIM B I and then B II, which opens heavy truck and trailer work; heavy equipment on public roads also needs a SIM B II. Other paths are public transport driving with a public SIM, fleet coordination or logistics staff roles at delivery firms. Some drivers become mechanics after automotive training, and train drivers follow a separate education and certification route.

**How to answer:** Explain how you contact the recipient, follow the company's redelivery rules and stay polite.

**Are you ready for shifts, long trips or changing schedules?**

**Why they ask:** Much logistics and transport work does not follow office hours.

**How to answer:** Answer honestly, then ask about the schedule, rest time, any meal or lodging allowance and how overtime is recorded. Get it in writing.

**Which driving licence do you hold and what is your driving experience?**

**Why they ask:** The licence type decides which vehicles you may drive.

**How to answer:** State your licence type honestly, how long you have driven and the vehicles you usually drive. Show original documents only for checking.

- **Tell me about yourself.** Answer in about a minute: where you are now in work or study, two experiences that matter for this job, then why you applied. Personal matters such as family status are not needed.
- **Why did you apply to this company?** Mention one or two real things you learned from the company's official website, such as its business or services, and link them to your skills.
- **Why are you interested in this role?** Pick two tasks from the job advert, describe similar things you have done, and say which part you most want to grow in.
- **What are your strengths?** Name one or two strengths and give short proof: the situation, what you did and the result.
- **What is your weakness?** Choose a real weakness that is not central to the job, then explain what you are doing to improve it.
- **Tell me about a problem at work or school that you solved.** Use the STAR pattern: Situation, Task, Action, Result. Focus on what you yourself did and what you learned.
- **How do you work in a team, including when people disagree?** Give a real example of listening, explaining your view politely and finding a solution everyone accepted.
- **How do you handle pressure or tight deadlines?** Explain how you set priorities, such as a task list or checking with your supervisor, and give one example of the outcome.
- **Where do you see yourself in two or three years?** Mention the skills you want to master and the responsibility you hope to take on, without promising things you cannot know.
- **What salary do you expect?** First research the pay range for the role and the local minimum wage where you would work. Give a range, then ask whether the figure is gross or net and which allowances apply.
- **When can you start?** Give a realistic date. If you are still employed, mention the notice period in your current contract so you do not break it.
- **Do you have any questions for us?** Ask about the contract type, working hours, base pay and allowances, the next selection step and when results are announced. Ask for the offer in writing.

## Which job scams target driver applicants?

At home, the usual driver-job scams are fees for licence processing, training or a uniform paid to the recruiter, and demands for your original BPKB or diploma as a guarantee. Manpower Ministry Circular M/5/HK.04.00/V/2025 bars holding original personal documents as a guarantee for work. For jobs abroad, be wary of driver offers that skip the destination's tests and licence, or of individual recruiters, whom Law 18/2017 Article 69 bars from placing migrant workers.

**Which licence do you need to drive a truck in Indonesia?**

It depends on the vehicle's weight. Under Law 22/2009 Article 80, goods vehicles with a permitted weight up to 3,500 kilograms need a SIM A, heavier ones a SIM B I, and tractor units or vehicles towing trailers a SIM B II. The minimum age is 20 for a SIM B I and 21 for a SIM B II (Article 81). For public transport you need the equivalent public (Umum) licence (Article 82).

**Is an Indonesian SIM enough to work as a driver in Japan through SSW?**

No. The Immigration Services Agency of Japan's official explainer, revised on 17 July 2026, says the SSW automobile transportation field requires the SSW skills test and a Japanese driving licence, plus a set level of Japanese that is higher for bus and taxi drivers. Japan also offers a special preparatory status for obtaining a Japanese licence. Treat offers that skip these requirements with caution.
