# Financial analyst in Indonesia: duties, OJK licences, pay and applying safely

## What does a financial analyst do in Indonesia, and where do they work?

A financial analyst turns financial data into the basis for decisions. In a company, financial planning and analysis (FP&A) analysts build budgets, cash-flow forecasts and variance analysis between plan and actual results. On the investment side, analysts research the economy, industries and issuers, then value shares or bonds. Indonesia's capital market competency standard (SKKNI Pasar Modal, Ministerial Decree 20/2024) includes units such as financial modelling, securities valuation and research reporting.

- Compare actual results with the budget and explain the variances to management.
- Build spreadsheet financial models to assess business plans or investments.
- Analyse financial statements, ratios and business-unit performance.
- On the investment side, research the economy, industries and issuers, then value shares or bonds.
- Write research reports or presentations for management, an investment committee or clients.
- Monitor portfolio performance and risk within company policy.
- Work with accounting, tax and audit teams so the data used is accurate.

## What do you need to work as a financial analyst in Indonesia?

Financial analyst vacancies in Indonesia usually ask for an S1 in accounting, finance, management or economics, strong Excel and financial modelling. Analysts at ordinary companies need no OJK licence. At securities companies, OJK Regulation 20/POJK.04/2018 Article 3 requires the official heading the analysis or research function to hold a WPPE licence, and OJK Regulation 31/POJK.04/2018 requires investment manager representatives to hold a WMI licence with at least a D3 diploma.

## What does a typical financial analyst job description look like?

Financial analyst ads usually ask for a degree in finance or accounting, Excel and financial modelling skills, an understanding of financial statements and the ability to present findings to management. ## How much does a financial analyst earn in Indonesia?

A financial analyst may not be paid below the provincial or regency/city minimum wage that applies where they work, at least for workers with less than one year of service (Government Regulation 36/2021, Articles 23 and 24). KarirAman does not show an analyst-specific figure yet, because no verified vacancy data with a large enough sample and no official pay scale exist for this role. ## Which education routes lead to financial analyst jobs?

The usual route is an S1 in accounting, financial management, economics or statistics; D3 graduates can start as finance staff. An OJK capital market licence requires a competency certificate from a certification body registered with OJK or work experience at a capital market regulator. The CFA from CFA Institute is voluntary: it requires passing Levels I, II and III plus the Practical Skills Modules, at least 4,000 hours of work experience over a minimum of 36 months, professional references and CFA Institute membership.

## Do financial analysts in Indonesia need an OJK licence such as the WPPE or WMI?

You need an OJK licence when you act on behalf of a securities company. Capital Market Law 8/1995, Article 32, says that only licensed individuals may act as underwriter representatives, broker-dealer representatives or investment manager representatives. OJK Regulations 20/POJK.04/2018 and 31/POJK.04/2018 make those licences valid for three years and renewable, and require expertise shown by a certificate from a certification body registered with OJK or by work experience at a capital market regulator.

## How is a financial analyst different from an accountant, an auditor or a tax officer?

Accountants and accounting staff record transactions and prepare financial statements, auditors check whether those statements are fair, and tax officers handle tax obligations. A financial analyst uses their work to look ahead: building forecasts, valuing investments and making recommendations. Under Law 5/2011, audits of financial information may only be provided by licensed public accountants, so a financial analyst does not sign audits.

## Can an analyst sell paid trading signals or stock tips in Indonesia?

Not without a licence. The Capital Market Law, as amended by Law 4/2023, defines an investment adviser as a party that advises others on buying or selling securities for a fee, and Article 34 says only a party with a business licence may do this. Be suspicious of any job that asks you to sell paid signals, manage other people's money through a personal account or fill stock groups with new members.

## Who must hold a WPPE licence at a securities company?

OJK Regulation 20/POJK.04/2018, Article 3(2), requires a WPPE (broker-dealer representative) licence for five groups at a securities company that acts as a broker-dealer: the director responsible for brokerage, marketing staff, risk management staff, the official heading compliance or internal audit, and the official heading the securities analysis or research function. A WPEE (underwriter representative) licence holder may also act as a WPPE (Article 2(3)).

Staff who only do marketing can hold a WPPE Pemasaran (marketing) or WPPE Pemasaran Terbatas (limited marketing) licence under OJK Regulation 22/POJK.04/2016, Article 4. Those licences cover marketing only, so the official heading the analysis or research function still needs a WPPE licence.

The newer OJK Regulation 3 of 2026, Articles 7 and 12, sets a rule for securities companies acting as lead underwriters: the official heading research must hold a Wakil Perusahaan Efek licence and a securities analyst certificate, while research staff must hold one of the two. If you apply for a research analyst role at a securities firm, ask early which licence or certificate the position expects.

A licensed representative may not work for more than one securities company (Capital Market Law 8/1995, Article 33(2)). Treat an offer to work as a freelance analyst for several firms at once under your licence with caution.

## How do you check an investment job offer before applying?

1. Confirm that the company is licensed by asking OJK's contact centre 157, not through a number or link the recruiter gives you.
2. Search for the self-styled analyst or representative in OJK's Wakil Perusahaan Efek database.
3. Match the recruiter's website and social media accounts with the company's official channels. OJK says scammers duplicate the names and websites of licensed entities.
4. Refuse any request for a deposit, training fees or the loan of a bank account in your name.
5. If you have already transferred money, report it to IASC (Indonesia Anti-Scam Centre) and make a police report. IASC says the two reports serve different purposes and both are needed.

## How does a financial analyst compare with accounting staff on the career ladder?

- **Tell me about yourself.** Answer in about a minute: where you are now in work or study, two experiences that matter for this job, then why you applied. Personal matters such as family status are not needed.
- **Why did you apply to this company?** Mention one or two real things you learned from the company's official website, such as its business or services, and link them to your skills.
- **Why are you interested in this role?** Pick two tasks from the job advert, describe similar things you have done, and say which part you most want to grow in.
- **What are your strengths?** Name one or two strengths and give short proof: the situation, what you did and the result.
- **What is your weakness?** Choose a real weakness that is not central to the job, then explain what you are doing to improve it.
- **Tell me about a problem at work or school that you solved.** Use the STAR pattern: Situation, Task, Action, Result. Focus on what you yourself did and what you learned.
- **How do you work in a team, including when people disagree?** Give a real example of listening, explaining your view politely and finding a solution everyone accepted.
- **How do you handle pressure or tight deadlines?** Explain how you set priorities, such as a task list or checking with your supervisor, and give one example of the outcome.
- **Where do you see yourself in two or three years?** Mention the skills you want to master and the responsibility you hope to take on, without promising things you cannot know.
- **What salary do you expect?** First research the pay range for the role and the local minimum wage where you would work. Give a range, then ask whether the figure is gross or net and which allowances apply.
- **When can you start?** Give a realistic date. If you are still employed, mention the notice period in your current contract so you do not break it.
