## What does a flight attendant do in Indonesia?

Flight attendants, or cabin crew, are above all responsible for passenger safety: checking emergency equipment, demonstrating safety procedures and leading an evacuation if an emergency happens. They also serve passengers, provide food and drinks, and help passengers who need assistance. Law 6/2023 names cabin personnel as part of the personnel who support aircraft operations. To qualify, a flight attendant completes approved training and holds a flight attendant certificate from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation.

## What do you need to become a flight attendant in Indonesia?

Cabin crew must hold a certificate of competence. Law 1/2009 Article 58, as amended by Law 6/2023, requires every aircraft personnel member to hold a licence or certificate of competence. Under CASR Part 63, applicants for a flight attendant certificate must be at least 18, speak English, hold at least a second-class medical certificate, and pass knowledge and practical tests set by the Director General of Civil Aviation after approved training.

## What does a typical flight attendant job description look like?

Cabin crew recruitment ads in Indonesia usually ask for at least a high school education, English, good health, the ability to swim, and willingness to complete training and work rotating schedules. Age and height limits differ by airline, so we do not print figures. We wrote the description below ourselves from common advertising patterns. ## How much does a flight attendant earn in Indonesia?

We do not show a flight attendant pay figure yet, because no data meets our standard: verified vacancies with a large enough sample, licensed data or an official pay scale. The table below shows only the data that exists. For workers with less than one year of service, Government Regulation 36/2021 bars pay below the minimum wage. Ask early, in writing, how base pay, flying allowances and any service bond are set.

## Which education routes lead to cabin crew work?

The usual route is to finish high school or vocational school, then take cabin crew training with an airline or with a provider whose course is approved by the Director General of Civil Aviation under CASR 63.109. We found no cabin crew programme in the study programme list of the Indonesian Aviation Polytechnic in Curug, and no SKKNI standard for cabin crew. Before paying a private flight attendant school, check its course is recognised and ignore promises of guaranteed hiring.

## What medical requirements apply to cabin crew in Indonesia?

Under CASR Part 63, no one may serve as cabin crew on a commercial aircraft without a medical certificate of at least second class under CASR Part 67, issued within the previous twelve months. Medical standards and certification are set in CASR Part 67, applied through Ministerial Regulation PM 69/2017. Medical checks follow the official process, not go-betweens who charge money outside the selection.

## Can Indonesians work as cabin crew for foreign airlines?

Yes. Several foreign airlines, including Gulf carriers, recruit cabin crew from many countries through their official careers sites and open selection days. Law 18/2017 defines an Indonesian migrant worker as any Indonesian citizen working for pay abroad, and workers who go without an agency must report to the manpower agency and the Indonesian mission. Ask KP2MI how those rules apply to your contract.

## How do you become a train attendant in Indonesia, and how is it different from cabin crew?

Train attendants (pramugari and pramugara kereta) serve passengers on board, but they are not the rolling-stock crew who operate the train. Under Transport Ministry Regulation PM 4/2017 Article 3, the crew for manual operation are the train driver and assistant driver, who must hold a certificate of competence from the Director General, while the flight attendant certificate applies only to aviation. The hiring company sets train attendants' requirements. In July 2026 a subsidiary of the state-owned rail operator warned of fake recruitment on social media and said its selection is free.

## What is the legitimate route to becoming cabin crew?

The usual route is: apply through the airline's official careers site, go through selection (documents, interview, English test, swimming test and medical examination), then complete cabin crew training. Under CASR Part 63, that training must be an approved programme, and you must pass knowledge and practical tests set by the Director General of Civil Aviation before you receive a flight attendant certificate. You must carry the certificate on duty and show it on request. If the company pays for your training, there is usually a service bond; ask for its terms in writing before you sign, including its length and the compensation owed if you leave early.

## What should you watch for when applying to a foreign airline?

Apply directly through the airline's official careers site. A Gulf airline group says it never asks applicants for money, including for tickets, visas or work permits, and that approaches by WhatsApp, personal email or social media are most likely fraud. If you are recruited through an agency in Indonesia, make sure it is a licensed placement agency (P3MI) and that the vacancy is listed on SISKOP2MI. Law 18/2017 Article 30(1) says Indonesian migrant workers cannot be charged placement costs, Ministerial Regulation P2MI 17/2025 allows only costs written and itemised in the Placement Agreement, and any request for money outside that is a red flag. **Why they ask:** Cabin and ship crews are responsible for many people's safety.

**How to answer:** Explain that you follow procedures and training, stay calm, give clear instructions and work with the crew. Mention only safety training you actually hold.

**How do you adapt to time away from home and colleagues from different cultures?**

**Why they ask:** Work on aircraft or ships means irregular schedules and mixed teams.

**How to answer:** Give an example of adapting to a new setting, how you keep in touch with family and how you respect colleagues from other cultures.

- **Tell me about yourself.** Answer in about a minute: where you are now in work or study, two experiences that matter for this job, then why you applied. Personal matters such as family status are not needed.
- **Why did you apply to this company?** Mention one or two real things you learned from the company's official website, such as its business or services, and link them to your skills.
- **Why are you interested in this role?** Pick two tasks from the job advert, describe similar things you have done, and say which part you most want to grow in.
- **What are your strengths?** Name one or two strengths and give short proof: the situation, what you did and the result.

- **Tell me about a problem at work or school that you solved.** Use the STAR pattern: Situation, Task, Action, Result. Focus on what you yourself did and what you learned.
- **How do you work in a team, including when people disagree?** Give a real example of listening, explaining your view politely and finding a solution everyone accepted.
- **How do you handle pressure or tight deadlines?** Explain how you set priorities, such as a task list or checking with your supervisor, and give one example of the outcome.
- **Where do you see yourself in two or three years?** Mention the skills you want to master and the responsibility you hope to take on, without promising things you cannot know.
- **What salary do you expect?** First research the pay range for the role and the local minimum wage where you would work. Give a range, then ask whether the figure is gross or net and which allowances apply.
- **When can you start?** Give a realistic date. If you are still employed, mention the notice period in your current contract so you do not break it.

## Which job scams target flight attendants in Indonesia?

The most common trick is someone who promises to get you hired by an airline in exchange for money; in January 2026 Soekarno-Hatta Airport police revealed a victim who paid such a go-between. Other signs are requests to pay for training, uniforms, medical tests or tickets, and recruiters on WhatsApp who claim to be airline staff. Genuine airlines take applications through their official careers sites.
