In small companies one person often handles all things IT; in large companies the work is split into support tiers.

## What do you need to work in IT support in Indonesia?

No professional licence is required. Employers usually ask for a computer and network vocational school (SMK TKJ), diploma or computing degree, plus the ability to repair devices and understand networks. The Ministry of Manpower has set related national standards, including Computer Networks (Decree 321 of 2016) and IT Service Management (Decree 30 of 2025). Competency certificates are issued through BNSP-licensed certification bodies.

IT support vacancies usually ask for knowledge of hardware, operating systems and basic networking, patience with users, and willingness to work shifts or be called when something breaks. ## How much does IT support earn in Indonesia?

## Which education routes lead to IT support?

The most direct route is a computer and network vocational school (SMK TKJ), then a diploma or degree if you want to move into network or infrastructure roles. Vocational training in information and communication technology is available through the Ministry of Manpower's Skillhub, which its official site describes as free for participants. If you want a competency certificate, choose a certification body whose licence is still active in BNSP's directory.

## Which rights apply to IT support shifts and call-outs?

Government Regulation 35/2021 Article 21 sets standard working time at 40 hours a week, with exceptions for certain sectors or jobs. If you work beyond working time, Article 27 requires overtime pay, and Article 26 caps overtime at four hours a day and 18 hours a week. Your employer must also register you with BPJS (Law 24/2011 Article 15). Keep a record of every out-of-hours call.

## What does an IT support career path look like?

IT support careers usually start at helpdesk or technician level, then senior IT support, then network technician, systems administrator or database administrator, up to head of IT infrastructure. Some move into cyber security, DevOps and cloud, or AI engineering after learning to code. Experience handling incidents, tidy documentation and relevant competency certificates help you move up.

## Do computer, laptop and phone technicians count as IT support?

They are similar, but the workplace differs. Computer and laptop technicians at service centres or shops repair customers' devices: diagnosing faults, replacing parts, reinstalling operating systems and recovering data. Phone technicians do the same for mobile phones, such as replacing screens or batteries. Company IT support mostly serves staff and the office network. At a service centre, never open a customer's data without permission, because Law 27/2022 requires personal data to be kept confidential.

**Why they ask:** A clear sequence speeds up the fix and reduces disruption.

**How to answer:** Explain your sequence: ask about symptoms, check the basics, narrow down the cause, log a ticket and escalate when needed.

- **Why are you interested in this role?** Pick two tasks from the job advert, describe similar things you have done, and say which part you most want to grow in.
- **What are your strengths?** Name one or two strengths and give short proof: the situation, what you did and the result.
- **What is your weakness?** Choose a real weakness that is not central to the job, then explain what you are doing to improve it.
- **Tell me about a problem at work or school that you solved.** Use the STAR pattern: Situation, Task, Action, Result. Focus on what you yourself did and what you learned.
- **How do you work in a team, including when people disagree?** Give a real example of listening, explaining your view politely and finding a solution everyone accepted.
- **How do you handle pressure or tight deadlines?** Explain how you set priorities, such as a task list or checking with your supervisor, and give one example of the outcome.
- **Where do you see yourself in two or three years?** Mention the skills you want to master and the responsibility you hope to take on, without promising things you cannot know.
- **What salary do you expect?** First research the pay range for the role and the local minimum wage where you would work. Give a range, then ask whether the figure is gross or net and which allowances apply.
- **When can you start?** Give a realistic date. If you are still employed, mention the notice period in your current contract so you do not break it.
- **Do you have any questions for us?** Ask about the contract type, working hours, base pay and allowances, the next selection step and when results are announced. Ask for the offer in writing.

## Which job scams target IT support applicants?

A common trick aimed at IT support applicants is a training, certification or equipment fee before you are hired; the Ministry of Manpower says a recruitment fee is almost certainly a scam. Also watch for recruiters who ask for OTP codes or bank details, and for well-paid IT jobs in Cambodia that require you to travel as a tourist, which KP2MI says is not an official placement destination.

## Where can you find safe IT support vacancies?

Look for vacancies on official company careers pages, the Ministry of Manpower's Karirhub portal and the state-owned enterprise careers directory. A normal hiring process usually includes a technical or practical test and an interview, uses a company email domain and gives a clear office address.
