A judge in Indonesia hears and decides cases brought to court: studying the file, presiding over hearings, hearing the parties and witnesses, weighing evidence and writing the judgment with the panel. Law 48/2009 Article 19 calls judges state officials who exercise judicial power, and Article 18 places the courts under the Supreme Court in four branches: general, religious, military and state administrative. - Study the case file and prepare hearings with the panel of judges. - Preside over or sit in hearings and hear the parties, witnesses and experts. - Weigh the evidence and apply the relevant procedural law. - Deliberate with the panel and write judgments or court orders. - Encourage settlement or mediation in cases where it is possible. - Attend training and accept supervision and guidance from the Supreme Court. - Behave in line with the Judges' Code of Ethics and Conduct in and out of court. ## What do you need to become a district or religious court judge in Indonesia? To be appointed a district court judge in Indonesia, Law 49/2009 Article 14 requires, among other things, Indonesian citizenship, a law degree, passing judges' education, physical and mental fitness, an age of 25 to 40 and no prison sentence for a crime. Under Law 50/2009 Article 13, religious court judges must be Muslim and hold a degree in sharia, Islamic law, or law with a command of Islamic law. ## What does a typical judge job description look like? Judges in Indonesia are not hired through ordinary job ads but through official judge procurement announcements by the Supreme Court, or through selections for Supreme Court justices and ad hoc judges announced by the Supreme Court and the Judicial Commission. We wrote the description below ourselves from the pattern of official announcements; it is not an open announcement. Treat any offer to become a judge outside these channels as suspect. The basic route is a law degree (S1 Hukum); for religious courts, Law 50/2009 Article 13 accepts a degree in sharia, Islamic law, or law with a command of Islamic law. Under Supreme Court Regulation 5/2025, in force since 31 December 2025, the Supreme Court procures judges on its own authority. Candidates are civil service applicants with judge candidate status or Supreme Court civil servants who pass the candidate selection. The stages are planning, announcement, registration, selection, results, appointment as candidate, candidate education and appointment as judge. Candidates who fail the education remain civil servants within the Supreme Court. Regulations 2/2017 and 1/2021 still apply where they do not conflict. ## Which courts can a judge serve in Indonesia? Career judges in Indonesia serve in district and high courts of the general branch, religious courts, state administrative courts or military courts. Military judges come from the armed forces; Law 31/1997 Article 18 requires at least the rank of captain and a law degree. Under Law 49/2009 Article 19, district court judges are honourably discharged at 65 and high court judges at 67. ## What is an ad hoc judge and how do you become a Supreme Court justice? An ad hoc judge is a temporary judge with special expertise at a special court, not a civil service recruit. Ad hoc corruption court judges need at least 15 years of legal experience and must be at least 40 (Law 46/2009 Article 12); ad hoc industrial relations judges are put forward by unions or employers' organisations (Law 2/2004 Article 63). The Judicial Commission proposes Supreme Court justices to parliament for approval, and the President appoints them (Constitution Article 24A(3)). ## How do you read the judges' pay table? The table above shows two official figures from the annexes to Government Regulation 44/2024. The first row is judges' base pay in the general, religious and state administrative courts, from grade III/a to IV/e; a judge's grade and years in grade depend on appointment and promotion. The second row is the position allowance for first-instance judges, which Government Regulation 94/2012 Article 4 says is paid monthly according to the judge's rank, posting area and class of court; a judge at a class IA special court receives more than a judge of the same rank at a class II court. On top of these, Regulation 94/2012 Article 9 provides family, rice and cost-of-living allowances, plus state housing or a housing allowance. Ad hoc judges are paid under a separate scheme in Presidential Regulation 5/2026. ## How do you prepare for the judge candidate selection safely? 1. Follow official announcements on the SSCASN portal, the Supreme Court's sites and the Judicial Commission's site. Ignore posters with links outside official government domains. 2.
