# University lecturers (dosen) in Indonesia: requirements, ranks, certification and pay

## What does a university lecturer do in Indonesia?

Lecturers (dosen) carry out the three duties of higher education, known as Tridharma: teaching, research and community service. Law 14/2005 Article 60 requires lecturers to do all three, to plan and assess learning and to keep developing their qualifications. Under Ministerial Regulation 52/2025 Article 2, permanent lecturers work full time with a workload of at least 12 semester credit units, while non-permanent lecturers work below that level. Lecturers need at least a master's degree in their field; they are now registered with an NUPTK number and can take lecturer certification.

- Plan, teach and assess courses in line with the study programme's curriculum.
- Supervise students, including bachelor's, master's or doctoral theses depending on rank.
- Do research and publish it in journals or other outputs.
- Carry out community service in your field.
- Complete lecturer performance and workload reports (LKD/BKD) in the ministry's system.
- Take on extra duties such as programme head, committee work or running a laboratory.

## What do you need to become a university lecturer in Indonesia?

The main requirement is academic qualification. Law 14/2005 Article 46 and Ministerial Regulation 52/2025 Article 5 set a master's degree as the minimum for lecturers on diploma or bachelor's programmes, and a doctorate for master's or doctoral programmes, from accredited programmes. Article 9 of the same regulation says hiring at the Asisten Ahli rank needs a master's degree, and hiring at the Lektor rank needs a doctorate.

## What does a typical lecturer job ad in Indonesia ask for?

Lecturer ads usually name the study programme, the field and degree level required, the status (permanent or non-permanent), and expectations on research and publication. The description below is our own summary of common ad patterns, not any university's vacancy. ## How much does a university lecturer earn in Indonesia?

A lecturer's income is base pay and attached allowances, plus a professional allowance for certified lecturers, a functional allowance, a special allowance and an honorary allowance for professors (Ministerial Regulation 52/2025 Articles 53 and 56). The table below shows civil service base pay for grades III/b to IV/e under Government Regulation 5/2024, the range that regulation uses to set the professional allowance of non-civil-servant lecturers. Article 55 requires private lecturers to be paid above minimum living needs.

## Which education path leads to a lecturing career?

The path starts with a bachelor's degree, then a master's at an accredited programme in the field you will teach. A doctorate is needed to enter directly at the Lektor rank and to become a Profesor (Ministerial Regulation 52/2025 Articles 9 and 42). Scholarships can help pay for a master's or doctorate; LPDP says all its services are free of charge, so do not pay intermediaries who promise a scholarship.

## How do academic ranks work, and what does it take to become a professor?

The ranks are Asisten Ahli, Lektor, Lektor Kepala and Profesor (Ministerial Regulation 52/2025 Article 3). Promotion to Lektor and Lektor Kepala requires meeting the workload, credit points, performance indicators, a scholarly publication or artwork, and a competency test (Articles 40 and 41). For Profesor, Article 42 adds a doctorate, 10 years as a permanent lecturer, an educator certificate and two publications. Exceptional lecturers can jump two ranks (Article 36).

## What are the NUPTK and lecturer certification (serdos)?

According to an information page from ITS, the NUPTK (unique educator and education staff number) is now lecturers' official identity number, replacing the NIDN, NIDK and NUP. The 2026 serdos guidelines (Ministerial Decree 135/M/KEP/2026) require participants to be permanent lecturers with a NUPTK, at least two years' experience, at least the Asisten Ahli rank, four semesters of performance reports and a PEKERTI or Applied Approach teaching certificate. Universities submit nominations through SISTER.

## How are lecturers hired, including teaching assistants?

Civil service lecturers are appointed against CPNS formations (Ministerial Regulation 52/2025 Article 10) with registration on SSCASN, while autonomous state universities (PTN badan hukum) and private university foundations hire their own lecturers (Article 9). Non-permanent lecturers can become permanent (Article 12). A teaching assistant (asisten dosen) post is not an academic rank under this regulation, but it can give early teaching experience while you finish a master's.

## How do you apply for a lecturer post safely?

Applying safely for a lecturer post means confirming the university is official, the process is open and nobody is paid for a "special route".

1. Look up the university and study programme on PDDikti, then match the vacancy with the university's official website.
2. For civil service lecturer posts, register only through SSCASN.
3. Refuse requests for money for appointment, a NUPTK, serdos or promotion.
4. Submit papers only to journals whose publisher and review process are clear.
5. Hand over copies of your diplomas; show the originals only.
6. If anyone charges you for an academic service, keep the evidence and report it.

- **Why did you apply to this company?** Mention one or two real things you learned from the company's official website, such as its business or services, and link them to your skills.
- **Why are you interested in this role?** Pick two tasks from the job advert, describe similar things you have done, and say which part you most want to grow in.
- **What are your strengths?** Name one or two strengths and give short proof: the situation, what you did and the result.
- **What is your weakness?** Choose a real weakness that is not central to the job, then explain what you are doing to improve it.
- **Tell me about a problem at work or school that you solved.** Use the STAR pattern: Situation, Task, Action, Result. Focus on what you yourself did and what you learned.
- **How do you work in a team, including when people disagree?** Give a real example of listening, explaining your view politely and finding a solution everyone accepted.
- **How do you handle pressure or tight deadlines?** Explain how you set priorities, such as a task list or checking with your supervisor, and give one example of the outcome.
- **Where do you see yourself in two or three years?** Mention the skills you want to master and the responsibility you hope to take on, without promising things you cannot know.
- **What salary do you expect?** First research the pay range for the role and the local minimum wage where you would work. Give a range, then ask whether the figure is gross or net and which allowances apply.
- **When can you start?** Give a realistic date. If you are still employed, mention the notice period in your current contract so you do not break it.

## What lecturer job scams should you watch for in Indonesia?

Watch for requests for money to secure a permanent or civil service lecturer post, paid services to arrange a NUPTK, serdos or promotion, and offers of fast publication in predatory journals. In August 2024, LLDIKTI Region VII in East Java investigated alleged charges in professorship applications and stressed that its services are free. BKN also says civil service selection is free. **Can a bachelor's graduate become a lecturer in Indonesia?**

Not as a regular permanent lecturer. Ministerial Regulation 52/2025 Article 9 requires a master's degree to hire a lecturer at the Asisten Ahli rank, and Article 5 sets a master's as the minimum to teach diploma or bachelor's programmes. Law 14/2005 Article 46(3) allows exceptions for people with outstanding expertise and achievement. A bachelor's graduate can start as a teaching assistant (asisten dosen) while studying for a master's.

**What is the workload of a permanent lecturer in Indonesia?**

Law 14/2005 Article 72 sets a lecturer's workload at no less than the equivalent of 12 and no more than 16 semester credit units, covering teaching, supervision, research, extra duties and community service. Ministerial Regulation 52/2025 Article 2 adds that permanent lecturers work full time and that their teaching, research and service performance is planned and monitored.

**Is the NIDN still used for lecturers?**

According to an information page from ITS, since mid-2024 the NUPTK (unique educator and education staff number) has been lecturers' official identity number, replacing the NIDN, NIDK and NUP; issuing it requires lecturers to match and update their data.
