## What does a logistics staff member do in Indonesia?

Logistics and supply chain staff manage the journey of goods from supplier to customer. The work covers recording incoming goods (inbound), preparing outgoing goods (outbound), booking trucks or freight companies, preparing documents such as delivery notes and loading lists, and tracking goods until they arrive. The SKKNI Logistik standard set by the Ministry of Manpower in 2019 includes units on managing shipments and consolidating shipments, which describe the core of the job.

## How much do logistics staff earn in Indonesia?

## What education leads to a logistics job?

Common routes are a vocational school or diploma in logistics, management or administration, or a degree in industrial engineering and supply chain management. The Ministry of Manpower has set several relevant competency standards: SKKNI Logistik (Decrees 94/2019 and 170/2020), SKKNI Ekspor Impor (Decree 95/2018) and the multimodal transport forwarding standard (Decree 114/2015). Under Government Regulation 10/2018, competency tests based on SKKNI are run by BNSP-licensed certification bodies (LSP).

## How is logistics staff different from warehouse admin, warehouse picker and purchasing staff?

A warehouse administrator records goods and stock inside one warehouse, while a warehouse picker or packer does the physical work of picking, packing and loading. Purchasing staff buy goods from suppliers. Logistics staff connect all of them: planning shipments, choosing trucks or freight companies, handling transport documents and tracking goods on the road. In small companies one person may do several of these jobs, so read the duties in each advert carefully.

## Which shipping and export-import documents do logistics staff handle?

Logistics staff handle the documents that prove goods were sent and received: delivery notes, loading lists and receipts for domestic shipments. Transport Ministry Regulation PM 59/2021 Article 16 lists house bills of lading, house air waybills, customs documents and quarantine documents as transport documents. For exports and imports, export-import (exim) staff prepare invoices, packing lists and the data for the export notification (PEB) or import notification (PIB), including each item's HS code, which the exporter, importer or a licensed customs broker (PPJK) lodges in Bea Cukai's CEISA system.

## What is the career path for logistics staff?

Logistics staff usually move up to logistics coordinator or supervisor, then logistics manager or supply chain manager. Common side moves are inventory planning, export and import, or procurement. The 2019 SKKNI Logistik standard already includes units on leading a work team and managing the supply chain, and BNSP's directory lists tiered schemes from Warehouse Supervisor up to Supply Chain Manager.

## What is freight forwarding and how does it relate to logistics staff?

Freight forwarding, called jasa pengurusan transportasi in Indonesian law, is the business of handling everything needed to send and receive goods by road, rail, sea or air. The definition is in Transport Ministry Regulation PM 59/2021 on services related to water transport, which in 2021 replaced the older freight forwarding regulation (PM 49/2017).

Under Article 15 of that regulation, the activities can include receiving goods, storage in warehouses, sorting, packing, marking, measuring, weighing, issuing transport documents, handling paperwork, booking space on ships or aircraft, shipping, distribution, calculating freight and logistics costs, claims and cargo insurance. Logistics staff at the company that owns the goods usually book these services, while staff at the forwarding company carry them out. For this work, the Ministry of Manpower set the SKKNI standard for multimodal transport forwarding (Decree 114/2015), with units on handling road, sea and air cargo for domestic, export and import shipments.

Since PM 3/2026 was promulgated on 11 March 2026, staff at companies providing services related to water transport, including freight forwarding, must show competence through a competency certificate and/or a training certificate. The company must upgrade its staff's competence and pay for it. So if you are asked to pay yourself for "mandatory training" as a condition of working at such a company, ask for the legal basis in writing.

## What are WMS and ERP, and how do logistics staff track goods in transit?

A warehouse management system (WMS) records the location and quantity of every item in a warehouse, while an ERP links stock data with purchasing, sales and finance. Logistics staff use both to see available stock, create delivery orders and record goods the customer has received. System names and screens differ between companies, so what matters is understanding the flow.

The part closest to a logistics job is goods that have left the warehouse but have not yet reached the customer. The 2019 SKKNI Logistik standard includes units on organising vehicles to transport goods and giving customers shipment information. In practice:

- create delivery orders only from stock that is actually available in the system, then match them against the delivery note and loading list;
- record goods as in transit until there is a proof of delivery signed by the recipient;
- if the quantity or condition differs on arrival, ask the recipient and the driver to note it on the delivery note or in a report before the paperwork is closed;
- never share your system login, because every change is recorded under your account. The 2020 SKKNI Logistik standard includes a unit on protecting the security of electronic data.

## Where can you find safe logistics jobs in Indonesia?

Look for logistics jobs on the official careers sites of logistics firms, distributors, factories and online shops, on the Ministry of Manpower's Karirhub portal and at district manpower office job fairs. Check the company name on the AHU Online register and make sure the same vacancy appears on its official channels. **Is it normal to pay a deposit before starting work at a logistics company?**

No. Indonesia's Ministry of Manpower says a fee in recruitment, for example for administration, training or uniforms, is almost certainly a scam. Ministerial Regulation 18/2024 Article 51 says placement costs in direct recruitment are borne by the employer, and Article 11 bars private placement agencies from charging job seekers placement fees, except for certain positions set by regulation. Do not transfer a deposit to a recruiter.

**Can my pay be cut because goods were lost or damaged in transit?**

Not automatically. When goods travel with a public transport company, Road Traffic Law 22/2009 Article 193 makes the carrier liable for goods destroyed, lost or damaged from pickup to delivery, unless caused by an unavoidable event or the sender's fault. So the claim goes to the carrier first, backed by a report signed by the driver or carrier when the goods arrive. A wage deduction is lawful only if the employment contract, company regulation or collective agreement provides for it (Government Regulation 36/2021 Article 63).

**Must overtime during peak shipping seasons be paid?**

Yes. Government Regulation 35/2021 Article 26 limits overtime to 4 hours a day and 18 hours a week, not counting overtime on weekly rest days or public holidays. Article 27 requires employers to pay overtime wages, and Article 28 requires a written or digital overtime instruction and your consent. Keep a record of your hours. These rules may change once the new labour protection law approved by parliament in October 2026 takes effect.

**Do logistics staff need a competency certificate?**

For most positions, no: KarirAman found no professional licence required for logistics staff in general. Some sector rules differ. Transport Ministry Regulation PM 3/2026 Article 132 requires staff at companies providing services related to water transport, including freight forwarding, to show competence through a competency and/or training certificate, paid for by the company. Finance Ministry Regulation 219/PMK.04/2019 Article 25 requires customs brokers (PPJK) to employ a certified customs expert (Ahli Kepabeanan), certified by the ministry's training agency (BPPK).

**Can a company keep my original diploma?**

No. Manpower Ministry Circular M/5/HK.04.00/V/2025 bars employers from requiring or holding original diplomas and personal documents as a condition of employment. The only narrow exception is a diploma or certificate from education or training the employer paid for under a written agreement. Hand over copies only, and report a withheld document to the local manpower office.
