## What does a maintenance technician do in Indonesia?

A maintenance technician or mechanic keeps machines, vehicles or building equipment running. Factory maintenance technicians service production machines on a schedule and fix them when they break, automotive mechanics service vehicles, and refrigeration technicians install and maintain air conditioning. The work covers fault diagnosis, replacing parts, test runs and recording every repair in a work order.

- Replace worn parts and record their use.
- Complete work orders after each repair.
- Test machines or vehicles after repair before they go back into use.
- Follow safety procedures, including switching off and locking out energy sources before work.

## What do you need to become a maintenance technician or mechanic?

Technician and mechanic vacancies in Indonesia usually ask for an SMK or D3 in mechanical, automotive, electrical or refrigeration engineering, plus the ability to read technical drawings and service manuals. Experience often counts for more than grades. A competency certificate from a professional certification body (LSP) licensed by BNSP helps prove your skills, and higher-risk work such as electrical jobs often requires extra safety training. Refrigeration and AC technicians at levels 2 to 5 require competency certification under Permen LHK P.73/2019; see the AC technician guide.

## What does a typical maintenance technician job description look like?

Technician and mechanic ads usually ask for experience repairing machines or vehicles, basic electrical knowledge, the ability to read technical drawings and willingness to work rotating shifts. In hotels and office buildings, technicians work in the engineering department, looking after air conditioning, pumps, generators, power and room fittings. In workshops, mechanic helpers assist senior mechanics while learning diagnosis. At mines, heavy equipment mechanics maintain excavators and dump trucks at sites far from towns.

## How much do mechanics earn in Indonesia?

Technicians and mechanics, including motorcycle, car and heavy equipment mechanics, may not be paid below the 2026 minimum wage (UMK) of the regency or city where they work, at least those with less than one year of service (PP 36/2021 Articles 23 and 24). If you work beyond normal hours, the employer must pay overtime, except for certain job grades (PP 35/2021 Article 27). ## Which education routes lead to technician and mechanic jobs?

Common routes into technician and mechanic work are an SMK or D3 in mechanical, automotive or electrical engineering. ## Can a maintenance technician or mechanic work abroad legally?

Yes, through official routes. Japan's Specified Skilled Worker (Tokutei Ginou) visa covers automobile repair and maintenance and industrial product manufacturing, with a JFT-Basic or JLPT N4 Japanese test and a skills test for the field. South Korea recruits manufacturing workers through its Employment Permit System (EPS), and Indonesia is one of its sending countries. Singapore does not list Indonesia as a source country for manufacturing Work Permits.

## What shifts, overtime and social security apply to technicians?

Technicians and mechanics often work rotating shifts or are called out when machines break. Government Regulation 35/2021 caps overtime at 4 hours a day and 18 hours a week, excluding overtime on holidays. Because the risk of work accidents is high, make sure you are registered with BPJS Ketenagakerjaan, whose wage-earner cover includes work accident insurance (JKK). Employers must register workers with BPJS under Law 24/2011, Article 15.

**Legal status:** the Labour Protection Law was approved by the DPR and the Government on 6 October 2026 but has not been promulgated and its text is not public. Until it takes effect, the rules on this page apply.

## What is the career path for a maintenance technician?

Technicians and mechanics usually start as mechanic helpers or junior technicians, then become senior technicians, maintenance team leaders and supervisors or maintenance planners. Workshop mechanics can become service advisors, who take customer complaints and prepare repair estimates, then workshop heads. Heavy equipment mechanics at mines can become planners or plant supervisors. Specialising in electrical, refrigeration or control systems opens higher posts, including electrician roles.

## How do you check a technician or mechanic vacancy before applying?

1. Find the same vacancy on the company's official website or on Kemnaker's Karirhub.
2. Check the company's full legal name on AHU through the service below. Do not rely on a business identification number (NIB) printed in an ad, because we found no public NIB search on OSS.
3. Make sure the practical test takes place at the company's factory, workshop or office.
4. Refuse any request for money, your original diploma or certificate, or bank details before you sign an employment agreement.
5. For overseas offers, check the placement agency against the official P3MI list.
6. Keep the ad and messages, then check the ad with the job checker or report it through an official channel.

**Why they ask:** The company wants to know how quickly you can work safely on its line or site.

**How to answer:** Use the STAR pattern: the symptoms, your checks, how you isolated the energy source before working, the repair and the result.

- **Why did you apply to this company?** Mention one or two real things you learned from the company's official website, such as its business or services, and link them to your skills.
- **Why are you interested in this role?** Pick two tasks from the job advert, describe similar things you have done, and say which part you most want to grow in.
- **What are your strengths?** Name one or two strengths and give short proof: the situation, what you did and the result.
