# Merchandisers and visual merchandisers in Indonesia: duties, pay and applying safely

## What does a merchandiser do?

A merchandiser, often shortened to MD in Indonesia, makes sure a brand's products are in stock and look tidy in stores. Each day a merchandiser visits several stores on a route, arranges products to the planogram, counts stock, checks expiry dates, puts up promotional material and records competitors' prices, then reports through an app. The retail competency standard (Manpower Minister Decree 16/2018) includes a unit on product display.

- Send display photos and daily reports through an app or a work group chat.
- Keep a good working relationship with store managers and storeroom staff.

## What do you need to become a merchandiser?

Merchandiser ads usually ask for a high school or vocational school diploma, confidence with phone apps, attention to detail and willingness to work in the field. Roles that travel between stores usually need your own motorbike and a class C licence: Law 22/2009 Article 77 requires drivers to hold a licence for their type of vehicle, and Article 80 sets the SIM C for motorbikes. Merchandising is not a licensed profession, and many openings accept new graduates.

## What does a typical merchandiser job description look like?

Merchandiser ads usually state the area or store route, the number of visits per day, the photo reports required through an app, and whether the brand owner hires you directly or through an outsourcing company. The description below is our own summary of common ad patterns, not a vacancy from any company. A legitimate ad names the employer and never asks you for money.

## How much does a merchandiser earn in Indonesia?

Government Regulation 36/2021 Article 23 bars employers from paying below the minimum wage, which applies to workers with less than one year of service. Ask for any transport or fuel allowance in writing in your contract, separate from your wage.

## What education do you need to become a merchandiser?

Store merchandisers are usually high school or vocational school graduates who learn on the job. To show your skills, the retail competency standard includes units on product display, making signage for visual merchandising and helping with stock counts, which can form the basis of a certification scheme; ask a BNSP-licensed certification body (LSP) whether it offers one. ## What is the difference between a merchandiser and a visual merchandiser?

A visual merchandiser designs how a store looks so products are attractive and easy to find: dressing windows and mannequins, planning shelf flow, lighting and signage to the brand's concept. The role usually covers one large store or several branches and follows guidance from head office. The retail competency standard includes units on coordinating visual merchandising and managing lighting for displays and visual merchandising.

## How is a garment merchandiser different from a store merchandiser?

A garment merchandiser works at a clothing factory, often one that serves overseas buyers, and does not arrange stores. The job turns a buyer's order into a production plan: costing, arranging and sending samples, tracking materials and schedules, and communicating with the buyer. The garment competency standard (Manpower Minister Decree 177/2020) includes units close to this work, such as garment costing and evaluating samples before they are sent to the buyer.

## What are a merchandiser's working conditions and rights?

Merchandisers spend much of the day on the road and in stores, often with visit targets and daily photo reports. If an outsourcing company hires you, Government Regulation 35/2021 Article 18 makes that company responsible for your wages and protection, and a fixed-term contract (PKWT) may not include a probation period (Article 12). Law 24/2011 Article 15 requires employers to register their workers with BPJS.

**Legal status:** the Labour Protection Law was approved by the DPR and the Government on 6 October 2026 but has not been promulgated and its text is not public. Until it takes effect, the rules on this page apply.

## How do you apply for a merchandiser job safely?

Applying safely means confirming who your employer is, paying nothing, and holding a written contract before you start travelling between stores.

1. Look for the same opening on the brand owner's or distributor's official careers site, or on Karirhub.
2. If the recruiter is an outsourcing company, check its name on AHU and ask which brands you will handle.
3. Refuse any request for money for registration, uniforms, training or a work app.
4. Ask for a written contract that states your pay, transport or fuel allowance, working hours and BPJS membership.
5. Hand over copies of your diploma and vehicle papers; show the originals only.

## Why do merchandisers need to check expiry dates carefully?

Checking expiry dates and packaging is a key part of a merchandiser's job because stores are bound by consumer protection law. Law 8/1999 Article 8(1) bars businesses from selling certain goods that do not show an expiry date, and Article 8(2) bars selling damaged, defective or contaminated goods without full and accurate information. When you find a problem product, take it off the shelf, photograph it and report it according to the brand owner's and the store's procedure. Never swap labels or cover up an expiry date, even if you are told to.

**Why they ask:** The interviewer wants to see how you open a conversation and read people's needs.

**How to answer:** Explain that you ask about their needs first, explain the benefits that matter to them and accept a no politely.

- **Why did you apply to this company?** Mention one or two real things you learned from the company's official website, such as its business or services, and link them to your skills.
- **Why are you interested in this role?** Pick two tasks from the job advert, describe similar things you have done, and say which part you most want to grow in.
- **What are your strengths?** Name one or two strengths and give short proof: the situation, what you did and the result.
- **What is your weakness?** Choose a real weakness that is not central to the job, then explain what you are doing to improve it.
- **Tell me about a problem at work or school that you solved.** Use the STAR pattern: Situation, Task, Action, Result. Focus on what you yourself did and what you learned.
- **How do you work in a team, including when people disagree?** Give a real example of listening, explaining your view politely and finding a solution everyone accepted.
- **How do you handle pressure or tight deadlines?** Explain how you set priorities, such as a task list or checking with your supervisor, and give one example of the outcome.
- **Where do you see yourself in two or three years?** Mention the skills you want to master and the responsibility you hope to take on, without promising things you cannot know.
- **What salary do you expect?** First research the pay range for the role and the local minimum wage where you would work. Give a range, then ask whether the figure is gross or net and which allowances apply.
- **When can you start?** Give a realistic date. If you are still employed, mention the notice period in your current contract so you do not break it.

## What merchandiser job scams should you watch for?

The scam that most often targets would-be merchandisers is an agency that charges for registration, uniforms or training before you start. Manpower Ministry Regulation 18/2024 Article 11 bars private placement agencies from charging job seekers placement fees, except for certain positions, and the Manpower Ministry lists requests for money for admin, training or uniforms as a sign of a fake job. Also watch for recruiters who ask for OTP codes or bank details.
