## What does a photographer or videographer do in Indonesia?

Photographers make images for specific needs: product photos for online shops, wedding and event photos, studio portraits, news photos or passenger photos on cruise ships. Videographers shoot moving images, while advanced editing is usually done by a video editor. The photography competency standard, SKKNI Fotografi (Ministry of Manpower Decree 171/2024), includes units such as setting lighting, processing digital photos and making moving images.

## What do you need to become a photographer in Indonesia?

Photography is not a licensed profession; your portfolio and command of equipment matter most. Studio or company vacancies usually ask for a portfolio, photo editing skills and willingness to work weekends. Circular SE Menaker M/6/HK.04/V/2025 of 28 May 2025 bars employers from discriminating on any basis in recruitment; an age requirement is allowed only when the nature of the work truly needs it.

## What does a typical photographer job ad in Indonesia ask for?

Photographer ads usually state the type of shoot, such as products, events or studio work, whether equipment is provided or you bring your own, the editing software used and the working schedule. The description below is our own summary of common ad patterns, not a vacancy from any company. A genuine ad names the business, its address, the employment status and how you will be paid.

## How much does a photographer or videographer earn in Indonesia?

Photographer income varies widely: studio employees get a monthly salary, while freelancers are paid per session or project. For employees with less than one year of service, Government Regulation 36/2021 bans pay below the minimum wage, except in micro and small businesses, which under Article 36 set pay by agreement above a set floor. The table below shows a range from full-time ads on one platform, not an official average. We do not show freelance rates yet.

## What is the education route to becoming a photographer in Indonesia?

Common routes are a vocational school (SMK) in multimedia or broadcasting, a diploma or degree in photography, film or visual communication design, or short courses at job training centres. The photography competency standard (Decree 171/2024) is the national reference for skills, including units on applying copyright at work and occupational safety procedures. A tidy portfolio remains the main proof for clients and employers.

## Are cruise ship and overseas photographer job offers safe?

Yes, but only through official channels. Ship crew count as Indonesian migrant workers (PMI) under Law 18/2017 Article 4, and Article 30(1) says PMI cannot be charged placement costs. Ministerial Regulation P2MI 17/2025 puts placement costs on the employer; a worker may only be charged costs written and itemised in the placement agreement. Any other request for money, in cash or to a personal account, is a red flag. Check the agency on SISKOP2MI.

## Do photographers need their own gear, and what goes in a safe contract?

Photographers at studios, online shops or companies usually use the employer's equipment, while freelancers often use their own or hire gear per project. A client contract should state the scope of work, number of photos or video length, deadlines, deposit, final payment and usage rights. Law 28/2014 Article 80 says a licence to use a work is granted by written agreement for a set period.

## Who owns the copyright in photos made for a client in Indonesia?

Law 28/2014 Article 36 says that, unless agreed otherwise, the author and copyright holder of a work made in an employment relationship or on commission is the person who made it. Article 40 protects photographic works, portraits and cinematographic works. The client may use the photos as agreed. If the client wants the copyright transferred outright, put it in the agreement and price it accordingly: Article 16(2) provides for transferring copyright by written agreement.

## What should a photo shoot contract say so that you get paid?

A clear shoot contract protects photographers from clients who do not pay and from use of photos beyond what was agreed. Write down these points before the shoot, even if only in messages both sides confirm.

1. The client's name and contact, the date, location and scope of work.
2. The number of photos or length of video delivered, the file format and the deadline.
3. The price, deposit, final payment date and extra costs such as transport or equipment hire.
4. Usage rights: for what, where and for how long (Law 28/2014 Article 80: a licence by written agreement), and whether copyright is transferred (Article 16(2)(e): transfer by written agreement).
5. Written consent from the people photographed if the photos will be used in commercial advertising (Article 12).
6. Send low-resolution previews before the final payment, and keep every message.

- **Tell me about yourself.** Answer in about a minute: where you are now in work or study, two experiences that matter for this job, then why you applied. Personal matters such as family status are not needed.
- **Why did you apply to this company?** Mention one or two real things you learned from the company's official website, such as its business or services, and link them to your skills.
- **Why are you interested in this role?** Pick two tasks from the job advert, describe similar things you have done, and say which part you most want to grow in.
- **What are your strengths?** Name one or two strengths and give short proof: the situation, what you did and the result.
- **What is your weakness?** Choose a real weakness that is not central to the job, then explain what you are doing to improve it.
- **Tell me about a problem at work or school that you solved.** Use the STAR pattern: Situation, Task, Action, Result. Focus on what you yourself did and what you learned.
- **How do you work in a team, including when people disagree?** Give a real example of listening, explaining your view politely and finding a solution everyone accepted.
- **How do you handle pressure or tight deadlines?** Explain how you set priorities, such as a task list or checking with your supervisor, and give one example of the outcome.
- **Where do you see yourself in two or three years?** Mention the skills you want to master and the responsibility you hope to take on, without promising things you cannot know.
- **What salary do you expect?** First research the pay range for the role and the local minimum wage where you would work. Give a range, then ask whether the figure is gross or net and which allowances apply.
- **When can you start?** Give a realistic date. If you are still employed, mention the notice period in your current contract so you do not break it.

## What scams target photographer job seekers in Indonesia?

The main red flags are cruise agencies asking for fees outside the placement agreement, fees for registration, training or equipment hire as a condition of work, which the Ministry of Manpower calls almost certainly fraud, and unpaid trial shoots whose results the client uses. Government Regulation 22/2022 Article 8 requires agencies placing merchant crew abroad to hold a SIP3MI licence: ask for proof and refuse any payment not written and itemised in the placement agreement.

**Can I use client photos in my portfolio or for promotion?**

Law 28/2014 Article 12 governs using portraits for commercial advertising: the person photographed must give written consent, and a portrait of two or more people needs the consent of the people in it. To be safe, put permission to use the photos in your portfolio and promotion into the client contract, especially for photos that show faces.

**Is an unpaid trial shoot normal?**

A short test of your skills can be reasonable, but a trial whose results the client uses is work. Law 28/2014 Article 9(2) and (3) require the author's permission to reproduce or commercially use a work. Agree before the trial that the results may not be used without payment, send low-resolution or watermarked files, and keep records of your messages.
