A prosecutor (jaksa) is a civil servant in a special functional position at the Attorney General's Office, the Kejaksaan (Article 1 point 2 of the Prosecution Service Law, Law 16/2004 as amended by Law 11/2021). In criminal cases the Kejaksaan prosecutes, carries out court decisions, supervises conditional sentences and investigates specific crimes (Article 30). Prosecutors can also represent the state in civil and administrative cases and handle the recovery of criminal assets (Article 30A). - Reviewing case files from investigators and judging whether a case is ready to go to court. - Drafting indictments and sentencing demands, then proving the charges at trial. - Carrying out judges' orders and final court decisions. - Investigating specific crimes as provided by law. - Representing the state or government in civil and administrative cases under a special power of attorney. - Supervising conditional sentences, supervised sentences and parole. - Tracing, seizing and returning assets obtained through crime. ## What are the requirements to become a prosecutor in Indonesia? Article 9 of the Prosecution Service Law (Law 16/2004 as amended by Law 11/2021) requires prosecutor candidates to be Indonesian citizens holding at least a law degree when joining the Kejaksaan, aged 23 to 30, physically and mentally healthy, of good integrity and civil servants, among other conditions. Candidates must also pass prosecutor formation education and training. Before taking office, prosecutors swear an oath or make a pledge before the Attorney General (Article 10). ## What does a typical prosecutor job description look like? Prosecutors are not hired through ordinary job ads. The route is a Kejaksaan civil service (CPNS) post registered through SSCASN; in 2024 the post was called Jaksa Ahli Pertama (junior prosecutor) for graduates in Law or Legal Studies. That notice also set special requirements such as an age limit, a minimum grade point average, accreditation, TOEFL and physical criteria. Prosecutors are civil servants, so their base pay follows the civil service base pay table in Government Regulation (PP) 5/2024, in force since 1 January 2024, by grade and years of service. The basic route is a law degree. In the 2024 Kejaksaan CPNS intake, general junior prosecutor posts asked for a bachelor's in Law or Legal Studies with a grade point average of at least 3.00 from a university and programme both accredited at least B (Baik Sekali); the special Papua and cum laude posts used different thresholds. In the 2024 civil service intake, the Kejaksaan opened 2,000 junior prosecutor posts. The stages were an administrative check on SSCASN, the Basic Competency Test on BKN's computer-based system, then the Field Competency Test: a computer-based test on the job, a skills test, an interview, and eliminatory psychological, mental health and physical health tests. General posts in 2024 required applicants to be 27 or younger at registration. ## Where are prosecutors posted and how does the career develop? Applicants in the 2024 Kejaksaan CPNS intake had to accept a posting anywhere in Indonesia or another country set by the agency, with units from the Attorney General's Office down to high prosecutor's offices across the provinces. Article 11A of the Prosecution Service Law allows prosecutors to be assigned outside the Kejaksaan, to Indonesian missions abroad and to international organisations. Prosecutors retire honourably at 60, among other grounds (Article 12). ## How should you read the prosecutor pay table? The table above shows civil servant base pay from the annex to Government Regulation 5/2024, from grade III/a with 0 years in grade to grade IV/e with 32 years in grade. Prosecutors are civil servants under the Prosecution Service Law, so their grade and years of service decide where their base pay falls in that range; a prosecutor's grade depends on rank and promotion. The figures exclude family, position, performance and other allowances and are before deductions. Follow official notices on SSCASN, the Kejaksaan CASN selection channel and the Kejaksaan personnel bureau's website. Ignore posters with links outside official government domains. 2. Ignore paid promises of a pass. There are two patterns. First, brokers who promise a pass in the Kejaksaan CPNS selection for money; the 2024 Kejaksaan notice states the selection is free and the committee is not responsible for brokers' promises. Second, people who use a prosecutor's or Kejaksaan official's name to ask for money. In July 2026 the Sabang District Prosecutor's Office stated that the Kejaksaan never asks for money or favours in any form. **Warning signs in prosecutor job ads** - A broker promises you will pass the Kejaksaan CPNS selection in return for money; the Kejaksaan selection committee says it takes no responsibility for such promises. - You are asked to pay a registration or test fee; registration and the whole Kejaksaan CPNS selection are free of charge.
