# QA and software testers in Indonesia: duties, requirements, pay and applying safely

## What does a QA or software tester do in Indonesia?

A QA tester, or software tester, makes sure an app works as required before users rely on it. The work covers reading product requirements, writing test cases, running manual or automated tests, logging bugs with steps others can reproduce and retesting after fixes. Indonesia's Software Quality Assurance standard (SKKNI, Ministerial Decree 47/2017) also includes managing quality risk and testing software security.

## What do you need to become a QA tester in Indonesia?

Software testing is not a licensed profession in Indonesia. Employers look for care, logic, clear bug reports and a basic grasp of how web or mobile apps work. The official competency reference is the Software Quality Assurance standard (SKKNI, Decree 47/2017), still in force on 8 October 2026. A BNSP certificate in IT Quality Assurance or an international one such as ISTQB is optional, not a legal requirement.

## What does a typical QA tester job description look like?

QA tester ads in Indonesia usually ask for experience writing test cases, using a bug tracker, testing web or mobile apps and a basic understanding of SQL or APIs. Automation roles usually add programming requirements. We wrote the description below ourselves from common advertising patterns. It is not a vacancy from any company, so there is no apply button.

## How much does a QA tester earn in Indonesia?

KarirAman does not show a QA-tester-specific pay figure yet, because no data meets our standard: verified vacancies with enough samples, licensed data or an official pay scale for the role. If you are an employee, PP 36/2021 Article 23(3) bans paying below the minimum wage, which is the reference for workers with less than one year of service (Article 24). The table below shows only the data that exists.

## Which education routes lead to software testing work?

Common entry routes are the Software and Game Development programme at a vocational school (SMK), a D3 diploma, or a bachelor's degree in informatics or information systems. The Directorate of Vocational Schools lists a KKNI level II Software Engineering scheme for SMK students. New D3 and bachelor's graduates can apply to the Ministry of Manpower's MagangHub internships, which its FAQ says are free and last six months. The programming standard (Decree 282/2016) also covers unit, integration, system and acceptance testing.

## What is the difference between manual and automated testing?

Manual testing is done directly by a QA tester following test cases or exploring the app, and suits new features and visual checks. Automated testing uses scripts that repeat test steps, for example regression tests every time the code changes. Indonesia's Software Quality Assurance standard splits the two into unit J.62SQA00.008.1 for manual testing and unit J.62SQA00.009.1 for automated testing.

## What is the career path for a QA tester?

A typical path starts as a junior QA tester or manual tester, then QA engineer or automation engineer, up to QA lead, who sets the testing strategy and manages risk. Some move into software development, business analysis or security testing. The Software Quality Assurance standard includes advanced units such as managing quality assurance risk and evaluating how quality assurance is carried out.

## How do you handle a QA tester test task safely?

A test task is a normal way to assess QA applicants, as long as its scope is clear and you are not asked to pay or install suspicious files. Use these steps before you start any task.

1. Make sure the vacancy also appears on the company's official careers page or on Karirhub, and that the invitation comes from a company e-mail domain.
2. Ask about the time limit, the scope and the app to be tested. A fair task uses a demo app or one small feature.
3. Install apps only from official app stores or the company's official test links, never from an APK file sent by chat.
4. Never deposit money to unlock tasks, withdraw commission or buy a tester account.
5. Keep a copy of your work and note who asked for the task.
6. If you have already transferred money, report it to IASC and the police as soon as possible.

Interview questions for QA or software tester jobs often cover a project you are proud of, learning new tools, explaining technical things, testing your work, handling mistakes after release, and data security. **How to answer:** Mention least privilege, never sharing passwords, keeping systems updated and refusing requests for OTP codes or passwords by chat, even from someone claiming to be a manager.

**Why they ask:** Almost all software development is shared work.

**How to answer:** Explain that you read code before changing it, make small changes that are easy to review and give polite, specific feedback.

- **Tell me about yourself.** Answer in about a minute: where you are now in work or study, two experiences that matter for this job, then why you applied. Personal matters such as family status are not needed.
- **Why did you apply to this company?** Mention one or two real things you learned from the company's official website, such as its business or services, and link them to your skills.
- **Why are you interested in this role?** Pick two tasks from the job advert, describe similar things you have done, and say which part you most want to grow in.
- **What are your strengths?** Name one or two strengths and give short proof: the situation, what you did and the result.
- **What is your weakness?** Choose a real weakness that is not central to the job, then explain what you are doing to improve it.
- **Tell me about a problem at work or school that you solved.** Use the STAR pattern: Situation, Task, Action, Result. Focus on what you yourself did and what you learned.
- **How do you work in a team, including when people disagree?** Give a real example of listening, explaining your view politely and finding a solution everyone accepted.
- **How do you handle pressure or tight deadlines?** Explain how you set priorities, such as a task list or checking with your supervisor, and give one example of the outcome.
- **Where do you see yourself in two or three years?** Mention the skills you want to master and the responsibility you hope to take on, without promising things you cannot know.
- **What salary do you expect?** First research the pay range for the role and the local minimum wage where you would work. Give a range, then ask whether the figure is gross or net and which allowances apply.
- **When can you start?** Give a realistic date. If you are still employed, mention the notice period in your current contract so you do not break it.
- **Do you have any questions for us?** Ask about the contract type, working hours, base pay and allowances, the next selection step and when results are announced. Ask for the offer in writing.

## Which job scams target QA and software tester applicants?

Two scams QA applicants should watch for. First, phone-based tasks to test or optimise apps that pay a little at first and then ask for a deposit; OJK's anti-scam task force describes this deposit pattern, and the US FTC reports scammers using the term app optimisation. Second, long unpaid test projects that turn out to be the company's real work. Also beware of APK files sent by chat for you to test.

Look for QA tester vacancies on companies' official careers pages, the Ministry of Manpower's Karirhub portal and the state-owned enterprise careers directory. Yes, for entry-level roles, especially manual testing. The Directorate of Vocational Schools lists the Software and Game Development study programme and a KKNI level II Software Engineering certification scheme for SMK students.
