## What does a seafarer do?

Seafarers work on merchant ships, cruise ships or fishing vessels. The deck department handles watchkeeping, mooring and ship maintenance; the engine department runs and maintains engines and electrical systems; the catering and hotel department on cruise ships serves guests, cooks and cleans cabins. All crew must take part in safety drills and follow watch schedules for their post. Seafarers are also called ship crew or ABK, and their basic documents include a BST certificate and a seafarer's book.

- Deck department: keep watch, moor the ship, maintain the hull and deck equipment.
- Engine department: run and maintain engines, pumps and the ship's electrical systems.
- Catering and hotel department on cruise ships: cook, serve guests and clean cabins.
- Take part in safety, firefighting and abandon-ship drills.
- Record work under the ship's safety management system.
- Follow watch schedules and rest-hour rules on board.

## What do you need to become a seafarer in Indonesia?

Seafarers need certificates for their post on board. Transport Ministerial Regulation PM 70/2013 Article 55 requires basic safety training (BST) under Section A-VI/1 of the STCW Code, and the BST certificate of proficiency is issued after the training. For foreign ships, PP 22/2022 lists documents such as the passport, seafarer's book, sea employment agreement, social-security proof, medical certificate and competency certificates. The seafarer's book does not replace a passport.

## What does seafaring work look like, and how do ranks run from rating to master?

Seafarer adverts usually look for candidates with BST and certificates for the post, a seafarer's book, passport, medical certificate and working English, on a per-voyage contract; cruise ship vacancies also ask for hotel or restaurant experience. Careers start as a rating, such as a helmsman or oiler, then move to officer posts such as mate and engineer, up to master (nakhoda). Moving up needs a certificate of competency, Ahli Nautika Tingkat (ANT) for deck or Ahli Teknika Tingkat (ATT) for engine, from level V to I, plus sea service (Transport Ministry Regulation PM 70/2013).

## How much does a seafarer earn?

KarirAman does not show a seafarer pay figure yet because no data meets our standard, and pay depends heavily on rank, ship type and flag. MLC 2006, which has applied to Indonesia since 12 June 2018, requires wages to be paid at least monthly with a pay statement. Check the pay in the sea employment agreement and the official job order before you sign.

## Which education routes lead to work at sea?

The usual route is a maritime vocational school (SMK pelayaran) or maritime polytechnic for deck and engine posts, followed by BST and other STCW certificates. For cruise ships, hospitality SMK or D3 graduates usually add BST and English. IMO lists Indonesia among STCW Parties confirmed to give full and complete effect to the Convention (MSC.1/Circ.1163/Rev.13, October 2021).

## What rights do seafarers have under MLC 2006?

Indonesia ratified MLC 2006 through Law 15/2016, and the Convention has applied to Indonesia since 12 June 2018. The MLC bars recruitment fees charged to seafarers, except the medical certificate, seafarer's book and passport. Wages must be paid at least monthly with a pay statement, and seafarers have the right to repatriation at no cost. Keep copies of your PKL, payslips and messages with the agency.

## How can you check that a crew agency is licensed?

A crew agency needs two things: a crew recruitment and placement business licence from the Transport Ministry (PM 59/2021, which replaced the old rule behind the licence known as SIUPPAK) and, for placing migrant merchant crew, a SIP3MI licence under PP 22/2022. Check the agency on the SISKOP2MI list of P3MI, including the sanctions list, and ask for copies of its licences before handing over documents.

## What are the risks of working as fishing crew on foreign vessels?

Fishing crew (ABK kapal ikan) work on fishing vessels, often for months on the high seas without calling at port. Law 18/2017 Article 4 counts fishing crew as Indonesian migrant workers, and Government Regulation 22/2022 requires documents such as a passport, seafarer's book, sea employment agreement (PKL), social security proof and competency certificates; fishing crew who go individually may not work for an individual employer. Leaving without a PKL or through a broker exposes you to forced labour and trafficking.

Interview questions for seafarer jobs often cover getting goods or passengers there safely and on time, damaged or wrong deliveries, safety at work, difficult recipients, and shifts or long journeys. Each example below comes with why it is asked and how to answer it. The Ministry of Manpower warns that an instant chat interview without formal confirmation is one sign of a fake job.

**Why they ask:** Punctuality and safety are the core of this work.

**Why they ask:** Much logistics and transport work does not follow office hours.

**How to answer:** Answer honestly, then ask about the schedule, rest time, any meal or lodging allowance and how overtime is recorded. Get it in writing.

**How do you act in an emergency on a plane, ship or train?**

**Why they ask:** Cabin and ship crews are responsible for many people's safety.

**How to answer:** Explain that you follow procedures and training, stay calm, give clear instructions and work with the crew. Mention only safety training you actually hold.

**How do you adapt to time away from home and colleagues from different cultures?**

**Why they ask:** Work on aircraft or ships means irregular schedules and mixed teams.

**How to answer:** Give an example of adapting to a new setting, how you keep in touch with family and how you respect colleagues from other cultures.

- **Tell me about yourself.** Answer in about a minute: where you are now in work or study, two experiences that matter for this job, then why you applied. Personal matters such as family status are not needed.
- **Why did you apply to this company?** Mention one or two real things you learned from the company's official website, such as its business or services, and link them to your skills.
- **Why are you interested in this role?** Pick two tasks from the job advert, describe similar things you have done, and say which part you most want to grow in.
- **What are your strengths?** Name one or two strengths and give short proof: the situation, what you did and the result.
- **What is your weakness?** Choose a real weakness that is not central to the job, then explain what you are doing to improve it.
- **Tell me about a problem at work or school that you solved.** Use the STAR pattern: Situation, Task, Action, Result. Focus on what you yourself did and what you learned.
- **How do you work in a team, including when people disagree?** Give a real example of listening, explaining your view politely and finding a solution everyone accepted.
- **How do you handle pressure or tight deadlines?** Explain how you set priorities, such as a task list or checking with your supervisor, and give one example of the outcome.
- **Where do you see yourself in two or three years?** Mention the skills you want to master and the responsibility you hope to take on, without promising things you cannot know.
- **What salary do you expect?** First research the pay range for the role and the local minimum wage where you would work. Give a range, then ask whether the figure is gross or net and which allowances apply.
- **When can you start?** Give a realistic date. If you are still employed, mention the notice period in your current contract so you do not break it.
- **Do you have any questions for us?** Ask about the contract type, working hours, base pay and allowances, the next selection step and when results are announced. Ask for the offer in writing.

## Which job scams target seafarers and cruise ship applicants?

A common scam is a cruise ship vacancy on social media with high pay, easy requirements and a request to transfer training, uniform or visa fees to a personal account. MLC 2006 says visa costs fall on the shipowner and bars recruitment fees charged to seafarers. Also beware of departure without a sea employment agreement (PKL), which opens the door to forced labour and human trafficking.

## Where can you find safe seafarer vacancies?

Look for seafarer vacancies through agencies that are on the SISKOP2MI list of licensed P3MI and hold a crew agency business licence from the Transport Ministry under PM 59/2021. In July 2026 Ditjen Hubla urged seafarers to depart only through official agencies to prevent trafficking. Check your certificates in the Transport Ministry's verification system. **Are seafarers counted as Indonesian migrant workers?**

Yes. Law 18/2017 Article 4(1)(c) counts ship crew and fishing crew as Indonesian migrant workers (PMI). The placement and protection of migrant merchant crew is set out further in PP 22/2022, including the SIP3MI licence for placement agencies and documents such as the passport, seafarer's book (Buku Pelaut) and sea employment agreement (PKL).

**Which costs can a seafarer applicant be charged?**

Law 18/2017 Article 30(1) says migrant workers may not be charged placement costs, and KP2MI Regulation 17/2025 allows only costs written and itemised in the Placement Agreement. MLC 2006 also bars recruitment fees charged to seafarers, except the medical certificate, seafarer's book and passport; visa costs fall on the shipowner. Any other request for money is a red flag.

**How can I check whether a seafarer certificate is genuine?**

The Transport Ministry offers a check at pelaut.dephub.go.id/verifikasi. Enter the seafarer code and certificate number and compare the result with the certificate you hold. If a recruiter offers a certificate that does not appear in that system, do not use it and do not pay. The BST certificate itself is issued after training under PM 70/2013 Article 55.

**What are a seafarer's rights on pay and repatriation?**

MLC 2006, ratified by Indonesia through Law 15/2016, requires seafarers' wages to be paid at least monthly with a monthly account, and repatriation at no cost to the seafarer. Ditjen Hubla said in July 2026 that seafarers' most common complaints are late or unpaid wages, contracts extended without relief crew, and repatriation. Keep copies of your PKL and payslips.

**Can cruise ship vacancies on social media be trusted?**

Be careful. The Ministry of Manpower lists individual recruiters, registration fees, very high pay and departure on a visit visa as signs of overseas job fraud. Check the agency on the SISKOP2MI list of licensed P3MI, ask for proof of its crew agency licence from the Transport Ministry, and never transfer training or uniform fees to a personal account.
