# Security guards (satpam) in Indonesia: duties, Gada Pratama, pay and applying safely

## What does a security guard (satpam) do in Indonesia?

A security guard (satpam, short for satuan pengamanan) keeps a workplace such as an office, factory, shop, hospital or housing estate safe and orderly. Under Police Regulation 4/2020, a guard's duties cover physical, personnel, information and other technical security at the workplace. Day to day, guards man entrances, check visitors, patrol, manage parking, give first response in emergencies and log incidents in the shift report.

- Monitor CCTV and access systems where available.

## How do you become a security guard in Indonesia?

Police Regulation 4/2020, Article 6 requires security guard candidates to be Indonesian citizens, pass health, fitness and psychological tests, be drug-free, provide a police clearance (SKCK) and a statement of no criminal conviction, have at least senior secondary education, be at least 160 cm tall for men or 155 cm for women, and be 18 to 50 when registering. After Gada Pratama training, guards are confirmed and receive a KTA Satpam card from Polri.

## What does a typical security guard job description look like?

Security guard ads usually ask for a Gada Pratama certificate and an active KTA card, a police clearance (SKCK), good physical health and willingness to work rotating shifts; guards can be hired directly by the client or through a security services company (BUJP) under Police Regulation 4/2020. Two jobs are often confused with security guards: safety (K3) officers prevent workplace accidents and illness rather than guard premises, and airport aviation security (AVSEC) staff hold a licence from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, not a KTA Satpam.

## How much does a security guard earn in Indonesia?

Security guards may not be paid below the 2026 minimum wage (UMK) of the regency or city where they work, at least those with less than one year of service (PP 36/2021 Articles 23 and 24). This also applies to guards employed by a security services company (BUJP) as an outsourcing company, which is responsible for protecting their pay (PP 35/2021 Article 18). We do not show a guard-specific figure yet because there is no verified data with a large enough sample.

## What is Gada Pratama training?

The main route to becoming a security guard is Gada Pratama training, which Police Regulation 4/2020 says is run by Polri or by a BUJP holding an operating licence (SIO) for security training services. To move up to supervisor and manager, guards take Gada Madya and Gada Utama training. Competency tests are run by Polri's LSP or a BNSP-licensed LSP recommended by Polri. Make sure the training provider can show its licence.

## What shifts and contracts apply to security guards?

Security guards usually work rotating shifts, including nights and holidays. Guards employed by a BUJP are outsourced workers on a written PKWT or PKWTT contract, and an outsourcing PKWT must transfer their protections when the vendor changes (Government Regulation 35/2021, Articles 18 and 19). For women guards who start or finish work between 23.00 and 05.00, the employer must provide transport (Law 13/2003, Article 76).

**Legal status:** the Labour Protection Law was approved by the DPR and the Government on 6 October 2026 but has not been promulgated and its text is not public. Until it takes effect, the rules on this page apply.

## What is the career path for a security guard?

Police Regulation 4/2020 groups security ranks into staff (pelaksana), supervisor and manager. Staff need Gada Pratama training, supervisors need Gada Madya and managers need Gada Utama. Promotion within the staff group comes with service, no sooner than every four years, or from pelaksana to pelaksana madya after two years with a passed gada pratama competency test. Experienced guards can also move into building security management.

## How do you check a security guard vacancy before applying?

1. Look up the BUJP or client company on its official website and match the vacancy.
2. Check the company's full legal name on AHU through the service below. Do not rely on a business identification number (NIB) printed in an ad, because we found no public NIB search on OSS.
3. Ask any Gada Pratama training provider to show its Polri operating licence (SIO) for security training.
4. Refuse any request for a placement fee, your original diploma or bank details before you sign an employment agreement.
5. Keep the ad and messages, then check the ad with the job checker or report it through an official channel.

- **Why are you interested in this role?** Pick two tasks from the job advert, describe similar things you have done, and say which part you most want to grow in.
- **What are your strengths?** Name one or two strengths and give short proof: the situation, what you did and the result.
- **What is your weakness?** Choose a real weakness that is not central to the job, then explain what you are doing to improve it.
- **Tell me about a problem at work or school that you solved.** Use the STAR pattern: Situation, Task, Action, Result. Focus on what you yourself did and what you learned.
- **How do you work in a team, including when people disagree?** Give a real example of listening, explaining your view politely and finding a solution everyone accepted.
- **How do you handle pressure or tight deadlines?** Explain how you set priorities, such as a task list or checking with your supervisor, and give one example of the outcome.

## Which job scams target security guard applicants?

Security guard candidates should be wary of paid training or placement packages that promise a job. Under Police Regulation 4/2020, Gada Pratama training may only be run by Polri or a BUJP licensed for security training, and Ministerial Regulation 18/2024 bars private placement agencies from charging job seekers placement fees. Ask for proof of the provider's licence and a written breakdown of costs, and never hand over your original diploma.

Look for security guard vacancies on the official sites of BUJP companies that can show their Polri licence, careers pages of client companies, Kemnaker's Karirhub portal and official job fairs. **Does a KTA Satpam card need renewing?**

Yes, the KTA Satpam card has a validity period. Police Regulation 4/2020, Article 43 says a guard who does not renew a card that expired less than a year ago receives written warnings, and after more than a year may no longer work as a security guard. Guards must also carry the card and wear the service uniform and insignia on duty (Article 17).

**Is a Gada Pratama training fee a scam?**

Not necessarily. Gada Pratama training can be paid, but under Police Regulation 4/2020 it may only be run by Polri or a BUJP licensed for security training. Ask for proof of the provider's licence and a written cost breakdown. What you must not be charged is a placement fee from an agency, which Ministerial Regulation 18/2024 prohibits. A promise of a job after payment is suspicious.

**Must the company register a security guard with BPJS?**

Yes. Law 24/2011, Article 15 requires employers, including BUJP companies, to register their workers as BPJS participants.
