## What does a software developer do?

A software developer designs, writes, tests and maintains software, from web and mobile apps to a company's internal systems. Day to day, that means turning user needs into code, fixing bugs, reviewing teammates' code and preparing releases. Developers usually work in teams with designers, testers and product owners.

## What do you need to become a software developer in Indonesia?

No professional licence is required; employers judge technical skill through portfolios, coding tests and interviews. The Ministry of Manpower set the national competency standard for software development (programming) in Decree 282 of 2016, which is still in force. Under Government Regulation 10/2018, work competency certification is done by certification bodies (LSP) licensed by BNSP; check the licence in BNSP's directory.

## What does a typical software developer job description look like?

Software developer ads usually name the specialism: frontend developers build what users see on a website, backend developers handle servers, databases and APIs, full stack developers do both, and mobile or Android developers build phone apps. Ads usually ask for particular programming languages and frameworks, experience with Git and databases, a project portfolio and the ability to read documentation in English. Selection often includes a coding test.

## How much do software engineers earn in Indonesia?

We do not show a software-developer-specific pay figure yet, because no data meets our standard: verified vacancies with a large enough sample, licensed data or an official role-level pay scale. The table below shows only the data that exists. If you are an employee with less than one year of service, PP 36/2021 bars pay below the 2026 minimum wage (UMK) where you work.

## Which education routes lead to software development?

The most common route is a degree in informatics, computer science or information systems, but software engineering vocational school (SMK) graduates, diploma holders and course graduates can also get in with a strong portfolio. Government training is available through the Ministry of Manpower's Skillhub, which its official site describes as free for participants, and the Digital Talent Scholarship of the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs. ## How can software developers work abroad legally?

Destination countries usually use skilled work permits tied to an employer. In Germany, the EU Blue Card is for university graduates or experienced professionals with a contract of at least six months. In the Netherlands, a highly skilled migrant permit can only be requested by an employer recognised by the IND, and in the UK a Skilled Worker visa needs a certificate of sponsorship from an approved employer. If you go independently, Law 18/2017 Article 63 requires you to report to the manpower office and the Indonesian mission.

## Which workplace rights should software developers check?

Before accepting an offer, ask for a written employment agreement that states the contract type, pay, working hours and any remote work rules. Your employer must register you with BPJS (Law 24/2011 Article 15), and the minimum wage applies during your first year of service. Under Copyright Law 28/2014 Article 36, unless agreed otherwise, the person who makes a work in an employment relationship holds its copyright, so read the code ownership clause.

**Legal status:** the Labour Protection Law was approved by the DPR and the Government on 6 October 2026 but has not been promulgated and its text is not public. Until it takes effect, the rules on this page apply.

## What does a software developer's career path look like?

A typical path runs from junior developer to developer, senior developer and tech lead, then branches into team management, software architecture, DevOps, cyber security, data, AI or game development. There is also a testing track: software testers or QA engineers test applications, and SDETs write code to automate testing; this differs from factory quality control. Promotion usually depends on code quality, system design skills and contribution to the team.

**Why they ask:** The interviewer wants to separate your contribution from the team's.

**How to answer:** Explain the problem, the part you did yourself, the tools and the result. Share a portfolio only if it does not break a former employer's confidentiality.

**Why they ask:** Technology changes fast, so the ability to learn is valued.

**How to answer:** Give a real example: reading the official documentation, building a small project, then applying it at work.

**How to answer:** Explain that you tell the team at once, fix or roll back the change, find the root cause and prevent a repeat.

**Why they ask:** Careless access can open the door to data leaks.

**How to answer:** Mention least privilege, never sharing passwords, keeping systems updated and refusing requests for OTP codes or passwords by chat, even from someone claiming to be a manager.

**How do you work with other people's code and code review?**

**Why they ask:** Almost all software development is shared work.

**How to answer:** Explain that you read code before changing it, make small changes that are easy to review and give polite, specific feedback.

- **Tell me about yourself.** Answer in about a minute: where you are now in work or study, two experiences that matter for this job, then why you applied. Personal matters such as family status are not needed.
- **Why did you apply to this company?** Mention one or two real things you learned from the company's official website, such as its business or services, and link them to your skills.
- **Why are you interested in this role?** Pick two tasks from the job advert, describe similar things you have done, and say which part you most want to grow in.
- **What are your strengths?** Name one or two strengths and give short proof: the situation, what you did and the result.
- **What is your weakness?** Choose a real weakness that is not central to the job, then explain what you are doing to improve it.
- **Tell me about a problem at work or school that you solved.** Use the STAR pattern: Situation, Task, Action, Result. Focus on what you yourself did and what you learned.
- **How do you work in a team, including when people disagree?** Give a real example of listening, explaining your view politely and finding a solution everyone accepted.
- **How do you handle pressure or tight deadlines?** Explain how you set priorities, such as a task list or checking with your supervisor, and give one example of the outcome.
- **Where do you see yourself in two or three years?** Mention the skills you want to master and the responsibility you hope to take on, without promising things you cannot know.
- **What salary do you expect?** First research the pay range for the role and the local minimum wage where you would work. Give a range, then ask whether the figure is gross or net and which allowances apply.
- **When can you start?** Give a realistic date. If you are still employed, mention the notice period in your current contract so you do not break it.
- **Do you have any questions for us?** Ask about the contract type, working hours, base pay and allowances, the next selection step and when results are announced. Ask for the offer in writing.

## Which job scams target software developers?

The biggest risk for IT applicants is a job offer abroad that ends in the online-scam industry. KP2MI says many Indonesians were trapped in Cambodia and Myanmar after travelling as tourists for well-paid digital jobs, and Indonesia has no placement cooperation with Cambodia, Myanmar or Thailand. Also beware of app tester offers that pay a little and then ask for a deposit for the next task: that is a task scam, not QA work.
