## What does a tour guide do in Indonesia?

A tour guide (pramuwisata) accompanies tourists, explains attractions, manages the schedule on the ground and keeps the group safe. Indonesia's national tour guiding competency standard (Ministerial Decree 57/2024) includes planning a guided tour, meeting and transferring tourists, interpretation, first aid, handling conflict and guiding in English. Specialisms vary: city, culture, nature, mountain and dive guiding.

## How do you become a licensed tour guide in Indonesia?

The core requirement for a tour guide in Indonesia is competence. Law 10/2009 Article 53 as amended by Law 18/2025 says tourism workers work to competency standards proven by a work competency certificate from a licensed professional certification body. Some provinces add a tour guide identity card (KTPP); in Bali, Regulation 5/2016 asks for, among other things, a competency certificate, a passed Balinese culture test, a health certificate and a police certificate.

## What does a typical tour guide job description look like?

A genuine tour guide ad names the travel agency or destination manager, the area and type of tour, the languages needed, how and when you are paid, and whether you are an employee or a freelance guide paid per tour. The description below is our own summary of common ads, not any company's vacancy. Appearance or marital status requirements are not normal: Minister of Manpower Circular M/6/HK.04/V/2025 bans discrimination in recruitment.

## How much does a tour guide earn in Indonesia?

A tour guide employed by an agency may not be paid below the minimum wage: the city or regency minimum (UMK) where set, otherwise the provincial minimum (UMP) (Government Regulation 36/2021 Articles 23(3) and 25), for under one year of service (Article 24), except in micro and small businesses, which pay by agreement (Article 36). Law 18/2025's elucidation says guides may work independently. Day work needs a written agreement stating the pay (Government Regulation 35/2021 Article 11).

## What is the training and certification route for a tour guide in Indonesia?

The usual route is an SMK in tourism, a tourism diploma or degree, or guide training, followed by a competency test. The SMK Directorate lists a Junior Tour Guide occupational scheme and a level II KKNI scheme in travel business, and a BNSP-licensed tourism certification body runs Tour Guide and Tour Leader schemes. Specialist guides have their own standards, such as the dive guide standard (Ministerial Decree 18/2024).

## Can a tour guide work abroad as a tour leader?

Yes, and tour leading is the most common route: you lead a group from Indonesia abroad and return with them. The national tour leader standard (Ministerial Decree 221/2023) covers managing departure, transit, arrival and the group's return. Living and working abroad is a different matter: the Ministry of Manpower lists working on a visit or tourist visa as a scam sign, and official overseas vacancies are listed on SISKOP2MI.

## How can you work safely as an umrah tour leader?

Umrah tour leaders work for a PPIU, a travel agency with a business licence for umrah trips (Law 14/2025). Law 8/2019 Article 115 bans anyone from acting as a PPIU without the right to, and Law 6/2023 requires a PPIU to provide at least one religious guide for every 45 pilgrims. Before applying, check the agency's licence on the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah's SATU HAJI site. Law 14/2025 gives umrah staff protection, including insurance for the trip.

## How can a freelance tour guide protect their income and safety?

Many tour guides work freelance and seasonally, so income goes up and down and work protection is not automatic. These steps help you stay safe.

1. Ask for a written agreement for each tour: dates, group size, duties, pay and payment deadline.
2. Keep proof of payment and messages with the agency, especially for long tours or tours abroad.
3. Register yourself with BPJS Ketenagakerjaan as a non-wage-earner (BPU) member so you are covered for work accidents.
4. For tours abroad, keep your own passport; the passport and visa guides are listed under related guides.
5. Never pay to get groups, a KTPP or a certificate; competency tests are run by licensed professional certification bodies.
6. If tourists or co-workers harass or threaten you, stop the tour if needed and call the police on 110.

- **Tell me about a problem at work or school that you solved.** Use the STAR pattern: Situation, Task, Action, Result. Focus on what you yourself did and what you learned.
- **How do you work in a team, including when people disagree?** Give a real example of listening, explaining your view politely and finding a solution everyone accepted.
- **How do you handle pressure or tight deadlines?** Explain how you set priorities, such as a task list or checking with your supervisor, and give one example of the outcome.

## What are the common tour guide and tour leader job scams?

The most damaging pattern is unlicensed umrah operators recruiting tour leaders or agents and asking for fees, pilgrim quotas or pilgrims' payments into personal accounts; Law 8/2019 Articles 115 and 117 ban both. Also watch for fees to become a tour leader, tourism jobs abroad outside official routes, and agencies that do not pay their guides. The Ministry of Manpower says a recruitment fee is almost certainly a scam.

**What is a KTPP and is it required everywhere in Indonesia?**

A KTPP is a tour guide identity card worn while guiding. The rules are set by regions, so they differ by province. In Bali, Provincial Regulation 5/2016 requires general guides to hold a KTPP issued by the Governor and valid for three years. In West Kalimantan, Regulation 1/2020 bans guiding without a competency certificate and a KTPP. Ask your provincial tourism office about local rules.

**Can foreign tour guides lead groups on their own in Indonesia?**
