## What does a UI/UX designer do?

A UI/UX designer plans how people use an app or website: the flow, the screen layout and the interactions. The work starts with user research, then wireframes, clickable prototypes, usability tests and handing the design over to developers. A UX designer focuses on flows and user needs, while a UI designer focuses on the look and the components. In small teams one person often does both.

- Map user flows and information architecture for an app or website.

- Run usability tests and improve the design based on the results.
- Design screens and components in line with the design system.

## What do you need to become a UI/UX designer in Indonesia?

UI/UX design is not a licensed profession; employers judge your case-study portfolio, your research and your prototyping skills. The closest national standard is the Software Requirement Analysis and Design standard (Decree 44 of 2017), which includes units on designing the user interface and the user experience. You can take a competency certificate at a BNSP-licensed body, but it is not required to work.

## What does a typical UI/UX designer job description look like?

UI/UX designer vacancies usually ask for a case-study portfolio, fluency with interface design and prototyping tools, an understanding of user research, design systems and basic accessibility, and the ability to work with developers. ## How much does a UI/UX designer earn in Indonesia?

We do not show a UI/UX designer pay figure yet, because no data meets our standard: verified vacancies with a large enough sample, licensed data, or an official role-level pay scale. If you are an employee, employers may not pay you below the minimum wage (Government Regulation 36/2021 Article 23(3)); it is the reference for less than one year of service, after which pay follows the wage structure and scale (Article 24). Micro and small businesses are exempt (Article 36). Freelance rates are agreed per project, so put them in the contract.

## Do UI/UX designers in Indonesia need a design degree, or is a bootcamp enough?

The usual route is a degree in visual communication design, product design, informatics or information systems, but vocational school and diploma graduates and short-course learners can get in with a strong portfolio. A degree is only valid from an accredited study programme (Law 12/2012 Article 28), and a course certificate is not a degree. Government ICT training runs through the Ministry of Manpower's Skillhub. Before paying a bootcamp, judge its curriculum and alumni work, not placement promises.

## Why do UI/UX designers need to understand accessibility?

Accessibility makes an app usable by everyone, including people with disabilities. Disability Law 8/2016 Article 24 guarantees persons with disabilities the right to receive information and communicate through accessible media. The most common technical reference is WCAG 2.2 from the W3C, with conformance levels A, AA and AAA, covering for example minimum colour contrast and operation by keyboard.

## Can a UI/UX designer work remotely or freelance safely?

Yes. Many UI/UX projects are done remotely, by employees and freelancers alike. As a freelancer, ask for a written contract that sets out the scope, number of revisions, deadlines, rate, payment schedule and usage rights, and use a platform with an escrow account where possible. Self-employed people must register themselves with BPJS (Law 24/2011 Article 16(1)), for example as Non-Wage-Earner members of BPJS Ketenagakerjaan.

## What does a UI/UX designer's career path look like?

The usual path runs from junior UI/UX designer to UI/UX designer, senior designer, and lead or principal designer who sets design standards across products. From there it branches into design management, user research, design-system ownership or product management. Promotion usually depends on the quality of your design decisions and their effect on users, not on how many screens you produce.

## What is the difference between a UI designer, a UX designer and a graphic designer?

The three titles are often mixed up in job ads. The table sums up the usual differences; in small companies one person may cover more than one role. Graphic design has its own career guide.

Interview questions for UI/UX designer jobs often cover a project you are proud of, learning new tools, explaining technical things, testing your work, handling mistakes after release, and data security. **Why they ask:** The interviewer wants to separate your contribution from the team's.

**How to answer:** Explain the problem, the part you did yourself, the tools and the result. Share a portfolio only if it does not break a former employer's confidentiality.

**Why they ask:** Technology changes fast, so the ability to learn is valued.

**How to answer:** Give a real example: reading the official documentation, building a small project, then applying it at work.

**How do you explain technical things to people outside IT?**

**Why they ask:** Technical work often needs the support of non-technical users and managers.

**How to answer:** Describe using simple comparisons and focusing on the effect on users rather than jargon.

**How to answer:** Explain that you tell the team at once, fix or roll back the change, find the root cause and prevent a repeat.

**Why they ask:** Careless access can open the door to data leaks.

**How to answer:** Mention least privilege, never sharing passwords, keeping systems updated and refusing requests for OTP codes or passwords by chat, even from someone claiming to be a manager.

**How do you use user feedback to improve a design?**

**Why they ask:** Good design comes from testing with real users.

**How to answer:** Describe how you test, pick the feedback with the most impact, iterate and keep the design accessible to disabled people.

- **Tell me about yourself.** Answer in about a minute: where you are now in work or study, two experiences that matter for this job, then why you applied. Personal matters such as family status are not needed.
- **Why did you apply to this company?** Mention one or two real things you learned from the company's official website, such as its business or services, and link them to your skills.
- **Why are you interested in this role?** Pick two tasks from the job advert, describe similar things you have done, and say which part you most want to grow in.
- **What are your strengths?** Name one or two strengths and give short proof: the situation, what you did and the result.
- **What is your weakness?** Choose a real weakness that is not central to the job, then explain what you are doing to improve it.
- **Tell me about a problem at work or school that you solved.** Use the STAR pattern: Situation, Task, Action, Result. Focus on what you yourself did and what you learned.
- **How do you work in a team, including when people disagree?** Give a real example of listening, explaining your view politely and finding a solution everyone accepted.
- **How do you handle pressure or tight deadlines?** Explain how you set priorities, such as a task list or checking with your supervisor, and give one example of the outcome.
- **Where do you see yourself in two or three years?** Mention the skills you want to master and the responsibility you hope to take on, without promising things you cannot know.
- **What salary do you expect?** First research the pay range for the role and the local minimum wage where you would work. Give a range, then ask whether the figure is gross or net and which allowances apply.
- **When can you start?** Give a realistic date. If you are still employed, mention the notice period in your current contract so you do not break it.
- **Do you have any questions for us?** Ask about the contract type, working hours, base pay and allowances, the next selection step and when results are announced. Ask for the offer in writing.

## Which job scams target UI/UX designers?

Scams aimed at designers include unpaid design tests that are really client work, recruiters who ask for registration or training fees, and test files sent as APKs. The Ministry of Manpower says a fee in recruitment is almost certainly fraud. Be wary of bootcamps that sell a job guarantee too: a bootcamp is not a placement agency, and Consumer Protection Law 8/1999 Article 9(1)(k) bars offers containing uncertain promises.

## Where can you find safe UI/UX designer vacancies?

**Does a UI/UX designer need a design or computer science degree?**

No law requires a particular major. Vacancies often mention visual communication design, product design, informatics or information systems, but what matters most is a case-study portfolio that shows the problem, research, alternative solutions and results. If you want formal proof of competence, BNSP's directory lists a UI/UX Designer scheme at actively licensed bodies; check the licence before you register.

**Is it normal to do a design test without pay?**

A small test with a reasonable deadline is common in hiring. Be suspicious of a test that asks for a full design of the company's real product, repeated revisions, or handing over source files without an agreement.
