A video editor assembles raw footage, sound, music, text and graphics into a finished video that follows the script or the client's brief. The work covers choosing the best takes, shaping the story, fixing colour and sound, and exporting in the format required. The Ministry of Manpower's SKKNI Video Editing standard lists the same duties, including keeping master files secure and working with directors and clients. Many video editors are employees, while others work freelance, project by project.

## What do you need to become a video editor in Indonesia?

No professional licence is required to work as a video editor. Employers usually judge your portfolio, your command of editing software and your ability to meet deadlines. As competency references, the Ministry of Manpower has SKKNI Video Editing (No. 118 of 2014) and SKKNI Film Editing (No. 30 of 2019), both listed as in force on the SKKNI portal on 7 October 2026. A competency certificate is voluntary and issued by a BNSP-licensed LSP.

Video editor vacancies in Indonesia usually ask for a portfolio or showreel, command of video and audio editing applications, an understanding of social media formats and willingness to handle revisions. ## How much does a video editor earn in Indonesia?

We do not show a video editor pay figure yet, because no data meets our standard: verified vacancies with a large enough sample, licensed data or an official pay scale. The table below shows only the data that exists. If you are an employee with less than one year of service, Government Regulation 36/2021 bars pay below the local minimum wage. ## Which education routes lead to video editing?

Video editing does not require a specific degree. Many editors start from a multimedia or broadcasting vocational school (SMK), a diploma or degree in film, television or visual communication design, or teach themselves and build a portfolio. Government vocational training is available through the Ministry of Manpower's Skillhub, which its official site says is free for participants. For formal proof of competence, take a test at an LSP with an active licence in the BNSP directory.

## Who owns the copyright in a video you edit?

Law 28/2014 on Copyright protects cinematographic works (Article 40(1)(m)). Under Article 36, unless agreed otherwise, the author and copyright holder of a work made in an employment relationship or on commission is the party who made it. So write into the contract who holds the rights to the edit, whether you may show it in your portfolio, and who clears the music and other third-party material.

## Which rights do employed and freelance video editors have?

Video editors work either as employees or as freelancers, and their rights differ. Employers must register employees with BPJS (Law 24/2011 Article 15), and Government Regulation 35/2021 requires overtime pay when hours exceed the applicable working time. Freelancers are asked to register themselves with social security (Article 16). Tight deadlines and unlimited revisions often mean long hours, so set limits in your agreement.

**Legal status:** the Labour Protection Law was approved by the DPR and the Government on 6 October 2026 but has not been promulgated and its text is not public. Until it takes effect, the rules on this page apply.

## What does a video editor's career path look like?

Video editors usually start as assistant or junior editors who prepare material and rough cuts, then move up to lead editor, colourist or post-production supervisor. Some move into motion design, directing content or running their own editing business. A tidy portfolio, safe habits with master files and a reputation for meeting deadlines help most when you aim for bigger projects.

## How is a video editor different from a content creator?

A video editor focuses on editing: turning footage recorded by others or by the team into a polished video. A content creator usually owns the whole process, from the idea and filming to appearing on camera, uploading and reading audience data. Many creators and brands hire video editors to help, as employees or freelancers. ## What should a video editing project agreement include?

For freelance projects, ask for a written agreement before you start, even if it is only by email. At a minimum it should cover the scope (number of videos, length, formats), how many revisions the rate includes, the deadline, how and when you are paid, who holds the rights to the edit, whether you may use it in your portfolio, and who is responsible for clearing music, fonts and third-party footage. - **Tell me about yourself.** Answer in about a minute: where you are now in work or study, two experiences that matter for this job, then why you applied. Personal matters such as family status are not needed.
- **Why did you apply to this company?** Mention one or two real things you learned from the company's official website, such as its business or services, and link them to your skills.
- **Why are you interested in this role?** Pick two tasks from the job advert, describe similar things you have done, and say which part you most want to grow in.
- **What are your strengths?** Name one or two strengths and give short proof: the situation, what you did and the result.
- **What is your weakness?** Choose a real weakness that is not central to the job, then explain what you are doing to improve it.
- **Tell me about a problem at work or school that you solved.** Use the STAR pattern: Situation, Task, Action, Result. Focus on what you yourself did and what you learned.
- **How do you work in a team, including when people disagree?** Give a real example of listening, explaining your view politely and finding a solution everyone accepted.
- **How do you handle pressure or tight deadlines?** Explain how you set priorities, such as a task list or checking with your supervisor, and give one example of the outcome.
- **Where do you see yourself in two or three years?** Mention the skills you want to master and the responsibility you hope to take on, without promising things you cannot know.
- **What salary do you expect?** First research the pay range for the role and the local minimum wage where you would work. Give a range, then ask whether the figure is gross or net and which allowances apply.
- **When can you start?** Give a realistic date. If you are still employed, mention the notice period in your current contract so you do not break it.

## Which job scams target video editors in Indonesia?

A common trick aimed at video editors is a task or freelance project that asks for a deposit, a fee or an account purchase before you are paid; OJK's anti-scam task force describes the same pattern in part-time job scams. Fake clients also send APK files disguised as a brief, which OJK says can steal data and drain bank accounts. The Ministry of Manpower says a recruitment fee is almost certainly a scam.

**Do video editors in Indonesia need a BNSP certificate?**

No, it is not mandatory. There is no professional licence for video editors, and employers usually judge your portfolio. A competency certificate can help; the test is run by a BNSP-licensed certification body (LSP) against an SKKNI standard such as SKKNI Video Editing. Before paying for a test, check the LSP's licence status in the BNSP directory and verify certificates on BNSP's certificate lookup page.

**Can a client ask for a deposit before giving me an editing project?**

That is not normal. A genuine client pays you, not the other way round. OJK's anti-scam task force describes part-time job scams that ask for deposits for further missions until the scammer disappears, and the Ministry of Manpower says a recruitment fee is almost certainly a scam. Refuse requests for deposits, registration fees or account purchases, and report the account.

**Can I put client videos in my portfolio?**

It depends on your agreement. Under Law 28/2014 Article 36, unless agreed otherwise, copyright in commissioned work belongs to the party who made it, but many contracts transfer that right to the client or restrict publication. Write a portfolio clause from the start, and respect a written request from the client not to publish.

**Is it safe to open a project brief sent over WhatsApp?**

Be careful with files ending in .apk. OJK warns that fake APK files can steal personal data and drain bank accounts once installed, and the communications ministry says such apps ask for SMS access so criminals can read OTP codes. A project brief is normally a document, a folder link or a video, not an app. Install apps only from official stores.
