# Career interest explorer: start with activities you enjoy

Mark the activities you enjoy. The explorer counts the themes you choose most often, then shows the KarirAman role guides close to those themes.

## What do the six interest themes mean?

The six work interest themes are known by the initials RIASEC. Each theme describes the kind of activity people enjoy, not what they are able to do. Most people enjoy more than one theme, and most jobs mix several themes too.

The code letters come from the English theme names: R Realistic, I Investigative, A Artistic, S Social, E Enterprising, C Conventional.

## How does the explorer work?

The explorer counts how many activities in each theme you mark as Like. The theme with the highest count is shown; if several are level, all of them are shown. It then shows the role guides whose first or second interest code matches those themes. Not sure and Dislike answers do not add to the count.

Each role's interest codes come from the O\*NET® 31.0 Database by the U.S. Department of Labor, Employment and Training Administration (USDOL/ETA). For each role we chose the one O\*NET® occupation whose tasks are most similar, with help from the ESCO to O\*NET-SOC crosswalk, and used its three highest interest codes (high points).

We wrote the activities ourselves; they are not a translation or adaptation of the O\*NET® Interest Profiler. That tool's licence allows only verbatim copies; a modified version must be validated.

There are 30 activities, five per theme, which we wrote ourselves from work situations in Indonesia. You can print this list: tick the activities you enjoy, then count the ticks in each theme.

## What are the limits of this explorer?

The explorer has not been validated for Indonesia. It does not measure ability or aptitude and does not predict success at work or in study. O\*NET® interest codes describe US occupations, whose tasks can differ from the same jobs in Indonesia. Interests are only one input: also look at your skills, pay and the minimum wage, where the work is, and whether the vacancy is safe.
