## Which visa do you need to work in Japan through Specified Skilled Worker (i)?

## What are the steps to work in Japan through Specified Skilled Worker (i)?

1. Choose an SSW field and make sure it still accepts new workers from outside Japan. As of 7 October 2026, food service is not accepting new COEs.
2. Pass Japanese and field skills tests. Satisfactory Technical Intern Training (ii) completers can skip the Japanese test and the skills test for the same field; a different field still requires its skills test.
3. Open a Sisko P2MI account in your own name and apply for Japan vacancies from a P3MI whose status is Aktif. Registering on Sisko P2MI is free.
4. Go through selection, complete your documents and sign a Placement Agreement that lists every cost component and its amount.
5. Sign the employment contract with the accepting organisation in Japan, then do the medical check and the briefing it provides.
6. The accepting organisation applies to Japanese immigration for a Certificate of Eligibility (COE). Once it is issued, you apply for the visa at a Japanese embassy or consulate.

## Which SSW fields still accept new workers from outside Japan?

As of 7 October 2026, most of the 19 SSW fields still accept new workers, but not all of them. Japan's Cabinet set the 19 fields on 23 January 2026. Food service has not accepted new COE applications since 13 April 2026, and the logistics warehousing and resource circulation fields start only after their additional rules take effect. All SSW (i) fields share a national cap until the end of March 2029.

Field status can change at any time. Check the official SSW page of the Immigration Services Agency of Japan before you pay for training in a particular field.

Some commonly searched jobs sit in a clear field. Airport ground handling, such as baggage, cargo and aircraft cleaning, belongs to the aviation field. Bread and pastry making belongs to food and beverage manufacturing, which from 1 April 2027 is split into food and beverage manufacturing and seafood processing. Welding is a main task in the machining and metalworking category (industrial product manufacturing), shipbuilding and marine machinery, and railway vehicle manufacturing, but it is not listed in the construction categories.

## How is SSW (i) different from SSW (ii)?

SSW (i) is for workers with a working level of skill in their field, and SSW (ii) is for workers with proficient skills. According to ISA material revised on 17 July 2026, the differences are as follows.

The nursing care field has extra requirements: the care skills test (介護技能評価試験) and the care Japanese evaluation test (介護日本語評価試験), in addition to JFT-Basic or JLPT N4.

From 1 April 2027, Certificate of Eligibility applications for SSW (ii) require Japanese at B1 level or above, according to an ISA notice.

## Which documents do you need?

Indonesia's Law 18/2017 Article 13 requires prospective migrant workers to hold a marital-status letter, permission from a spouse, parent or guardian acknowledged by the village head or lurah, a competency certificate, a health certificate from medical and psychological checks, a passport, a work visa, the Placement Agreement and the employment contract. Ministerial Regulation P2MI 2/2026 Article 9 adds the family card (KK) and the JKN health insurance card, uploaded through your own Sisko P2MI account.

According to the Immigration Services Agency of Japan, satisfactory Technical Intern Training (ii) completers are exempt from the Japanese language test. The skills-test exemption applies to the same field; moving to a different field requires its skills test.

**How long can I work in Japan on SSW (i)?**

According to the Immigration Services Agency of Japan, SSW (i) is granted for up to 3 years at a time and is capped at 5 years in total, or 6 years with reasonable grounds. Indonesia's Law 18/2017 Article 63 lets independent migrant workers work for legal-entity employers; they must report to the labour office and the Indonesian mission and carry their own employment risks. What the law forbids is an individual placing migrant workers (Article 69).

**Can an LPK training centre send me to Japan on SSW?**

An LPK is a training institution. Under Law 18/2017 Article 49, only KP2MI, a licensed P3MI agency or a company placing its own staff may place Indonesian migrant workers. If an LPK promises an SSW departure, ask for the name of the P3MI that will place you and check it on SISKOP2MI.
