What documents do I usually need to apply for a job in Indonesia?

To apply for a job in Indonesia, have your KTP-el (ID card) with a NIK whose details match your diploma, a CV and cover letter, copies of your diploma, transcript and certificates, and a SIAPkerja account with a SIAPkerja-ID. Minister of Manpower Regulation 18/2024 Article 43 requires job seekers who are about to start work to have a SIAPkerja-ID. A police certificate (SKCK) and a health certificate are needed only if the job or agency asks. Send copies, not originals, and leave details such as bank account numbers off your CV.

Is the yellow card (AK/1) still required?

The rules have changed. The yellow card, or AK/1, was governed by Regulation 39/2016, which Minister of Manpower Regulation 18/2024 revoked from 30 December 2024 (Article 86). Job seekers who are about to start work must now have a SIAPkerja-ID, a digital workforce card holding their identity and employment status (Article 1 point 20 and Article 43). You get it by creating an account and filling in your profile on SIAPkerja, free of charge (Article 36(4)). Job counsellors (Pengantar Kerja) at manpower offices are tasked with helping fill in profiles and issuing SIAPkerja-IDs (Article 19).

When is a police certificate (SKCK) needed, and how long is it valid?

The SKCK (Surat Keterangan Catatan Kepolisian) is issued by the National Police's intelligence function to state whether a person has a criminal record. According to the police SKCK site, it is valid for up to 6 months from issue and can be extended. You can apply at the SKCK counter of a police station or online by uploading documents. Get one when a job or agency asks for it, because its validity is limited.

Do I need a separate tax number (NPWP) before I start work?

For resident individual taxpayers, the NIK has served as the NPWP since 14 July 2022 (Minister of Finance Regulation 112/PMK.03/2022 Article 2). Since 1 July 2024 the NIK as NPWP has been used in Directorate General of Taxes services and other parties' services (Regulation 136/2023). Your details are matched against civil registry (Dukcapil) data, and details that are not yet valid need updating before they can be used. Check your status on the DJP Coretax service; the Panduan Warga guide linked from the checklist explains the steps.

Who registers me for BPJS when I start work?

Your employer. Law 24/2011 Article 15 requires employers to register themselves and their workers with BPJS step by step and to give complete and correct data. Article 14 requires everyone who works to join social security, including foreigners who work in Indonesia for at least 6 months. Once you start, ask HR for your BPJS Ketenagakerjaan (employment) and BPJS Kesehatan (health) membership numbers.

Do I need a bank account in my own name to receive wages?

Government Regulation 36/2021 Article 57 says wages may be paid to the worker in person or through a bank, and if through a bank, the money must be available to withdraw on the agreed payday. If your wages are paid through a bank, open an account in your own name. The financial intelligence agency PPATK asks people never to lend or sell their identity or bank account to others. A job offer that asks you to open an account and hand it over to someone else is a warning sign.

Can an employer ask for my original diploma as a guarantee?

No. Manpower Circular M/5/HK.04.00/V/2025 of 20 May 2025 bars employers from requiring or holding original diplomas and personal documents, such as competency certificates, passports, birth certificates, marriage books and vehicle ownership books (BPKB), as a guarantee for a job. The only exception is a diploma or competency certificate from education or training paid for by the employer under a written employment contract, with a duty to keep it safe and compensate if it is damaged or lost. Employers also may not stop workers from looking for better jobs.

What documents do I need to work abroad through an official route?

Law 18/2017 Article 13 requires prospective migrant workers to have a marital-status letter, written consent from a spouse, parents or guardian acknowledged by the village head or lurah, a work-competence certificate, a health certificate from medical and psychological checks, a passport, a work visa, a Placement Agreement and an Employment Agreement. Regulation P2MI 2/2026 Article 9 asks for documents to be uploaded through your own SISKOP2MI account, including your family card (KK) and JKN health card. On costs, the order is this. First, migrant workers may not be charged placement costs (Law 18/2017 Article 30(1)). Second, under Regulation P2MI 17/2025 the employer bears placement costs by default, and you may be charged only costs written and itemised in the Placement Agreement. Third, any request for money outside that document, in cash or to a personal account, is a red flag.

What are the warning signs when a recruiter asks for documents or money?

Be wary of recruiters who ask for original documents as a guarantee, who ask you to open a bank account and hand over the book or card, or who ask you to transfer money for admin, training or uniforms. The Ministry of Manpower calls such money requests a sign of a fake job and says genuine recruitment never charges applicants. For migrant workers, Law 18/2017 Article 6 gives the right to keep travel documents while working. Check a suspicious ad with Check a job before you send anything.

Frequently asked questions

Can I still get a yellow card (kartu kuning) from the manpower office?

The legal basis of the yellow card (AK/1), Regulation 39/2016, was revoked by Minister of Manpower Regulation 18/2024, which now uses the SIAPkerja-ID. On 8 October 2026 we found no mention of AK/1 on the SIAPkerja or Karirhub sites or the Ministry of Manpower home page. If an employer or agency still asks for a yellow card, ask your district manpower office which document it issues now.

Do I need every document on this checklist?

No. The group for applying lists documents that are commonly requested; a police certificate and a health certificate are needed only if asked for. The working-abroad group is only for official placement and follows Law 18/2017 Article 13 and Regulation P2MI 2/2026 Article 9.

How much does an SKCK or a passport cost?

KarirAman does not list the amounts on this page because fees can change. Check the official fees on the police SKCK site and immigration services, or in the Panduan Warga guides linked from the checklist. Pay only through official channels, never through a recruiter or broker.
