Signs of a fake job offer in Indonesia, from the Ministry of Manpower and OJK: fees, unrealistic pay, free e-mail, chat-only interviews. How to check one.

Summary

  • Indonesia's Ministry of Manpower (Kemnaker) says a fee in the recruitment process is almost certainly a scam.
  • Signs listed by Kemnaker include unrealistic pay, free e-mail addresses, requests for money, instant chat interviews and requests for ID or bank details.
  • According to OJK, scammers often pose as a large company or official body and then ask for financial-account details.
  • Job-offer fraud was the fourth most reported type of scam at Indonesia's Anti-Scam Centre (IASC) up to 31 May 2026.
  • If you already paid, report to IASC and the police quickly; the sooner you report, the better the chance the money is blocked.

What does loker bodong mean, and what else is it called?

A loker bodong is a fake vacancy created to take an applicant's money, hack their accounts or obtain their personal data. According to OJK's Satgas PASTI booklet, the scammer usually poses as a large company or recruitment agent, offers easy requirements with the promise of high pay, and in many cases the vacancy never existed.

What are the signs of a fake job according to Kemnaker?

Kemnaker lists several signs of a fake vacancy. Pay or benefits are unrealistic for entry-level or vague work. The recruiter uses a free e-mail address or website domain. The office address, duties and requirements are unclear. You are asked for money for administration, training or a uniform. Replies come very fast and the interview happens instantly by chat with no formal confirmation. The ad shows employee testimonials that cannot be checked. Applicants are asked for a KTP, bank account number or a selfie with ID 'for verification'.

How do job scammers usually operate?

The OJK booklet describes a recurring pattern. The scammer claims to come from a large company or official body, asks for an upfront payment for one reason or another, and finally asks for personal data linked to financial accounts. The goal is money, account hacking or access to the victim's personal data. Kemnaker adds that ID cards and selfies with ID can be misused for online loans.

What are the signs of a fake overseas job offer?

Kemnaker lists these signs: the offer comes from a personal account not registered as a licensed placement agency (P3MI), the requirements are easy, the pay is very high, there is a registration fee, personal data is requested directly, the company promises to cover all departure costs, you are told to travel on a visit, tourist or pilgrimage visa, and there is no clear contract before departure. On costs, UU 18/2017 Article 30(1) says migrant workers cannot be charged placement costs.

Is it legal to charge job applicants a fee in Indonesia?

UU 13/2003 Article 38 bars government placement services from charging placement fees, and a licensed private placement agency may charge only employers and workers in certain grades and positions set by the Minister. For vacancies posted by companies, Kemnaker says a fee is almost certainly a scam. For work abroad, Permen P2MI 17/2025 puts placement costs on the employer, and the worker may be charged only costs written and itemised in the placement agreement.

Is a job offer over WhatsApp always a scam?

Not always. Many small businesses in Indonesia recruit over WhatsApp. Watch for the combination: a chat-only interview, no clear address, then a request for money or bank details. OJK advises not to trust vacancies that arrive by private message straight away and to confirm them with the company directly.

How do you know if a job offer is legit?

Make sure the website and social media accounts showing the vacancy are the company's official ones. Do not trust vacancies that arrive by private message straight away. Confirm the vacancy through official contacts you look up yourself, not the number in the ad. For a limited company (PT), search its name on AHU Online; for an overseas recruiter, check the P3MI list on SISKOP2MI. You can also paste the ad into the job checker to see its warning signs.

I have already sent money. What should I do?

Call your bank straight away on its official number, then report to Indonesia's Anti-Scam Centre at iasc.ojk.go.id by choosing Lapor Sekarang. If you used more than one bank account, file a separate report for each. IASC also asks victims to make a police report at the nearest police station, because an IASC report does not replace it. According to OJK, the sooner you report, the better the chance the money can be traced and blocked.

How often are job scams reported in Indonesia?

The Satgas PASTI secretariat said IASC received 23,910 reports of job-offer fraud between 22 November 2024 and 31 May 2026. Job fraud was the fourth most reported type after online shopping, impersonation and investment fraud. The figure covers only victims who reported to IASC, so the real number of cases may be higher. Other official figures are on the job scam statistics page.

Are job ads on Facebook, Instagram, Telegram, TikTok or job sites safe?

A platform is only where an ad is posted. Fake vacancies can appear on social media, chat apps and job sites alike; KP2MI's cyber patrol unit, for example, took down thousands of fake overseas job posts during 2026. On any platform, take the same three steps: check the company outside the platform through its official site or AHU Online, never pay to apply, and report a suspicious ad through the platform's own report feature.

What are the signs of a genuine job ad?

A genuine vacancy can be found on the company's official website or social media accounts, and you can confirm it through official contacts you look up yourself. The office address, duties and requirements are clear, the recruiter uses a company e-mail domain, and nobody asks for money or bank details before a formal interview. The opposite of the signs Kemnaker and OJK list is what sets a real vacancy apart from a fake one.

Checklist before you apply

  • The vacancy appears on the company's official website or social media account.
  • The recruiter uses an e-mail address on the company's domain, not a free one.
  • The office address, duties and requirements are stated clearly.
  • The pay makes sense for the role and the area.
  • Nobody asks for money for registration, training, a uniform, a medical or anything else.
  • Nobody asks for bank details, OTP codes, PINs or a selfie with your ID before a formal interview.
  • You are not asked to install an APK file or app sent by chat.
  • For work abroad, the agency is listed as an active P3MI on SISKOP2MI.
  • You have confirmed the vacancy through official contacts you looked up yourself.

What does a fake job ad look like?

The example below is an illustration written by KarirAman's editors from the signs listed by Kemnaker and OJK. It is not a copy of a real ad. Names, numbers and links are masked.

URGENTLY NEEDED: admin and warehouse staff at [name removed]. High pay, no experience, start straight away. Send your CV, a photo of your KTP and your bank account number to 08xx-xxxx-xxxx. Chat interview today. Registration and uniform fees must be transferred before you start.

This ad shows several signs at once: unrealistic pay for easy requirements, a request for ID and bank details, an instant chat interview, and a demand for money before work starts.

Which job scams should you know about?

Each tactic has its own page explaining how it works, the warning signs, how it differs from a real vacancy, and what to do if you were caught:

Have a doubtful ad? Paste it into the job checker. Want to check the company? Follow How to verify an employer. Already harmed? Open Where to report.

Frequently asked questions

What if the recruiter claims to be from a well-known company?

Match the vacancy against the company's official website and social media accounts, then confirm through official contacts you look up yourself. OJK notes that scammers often pose as large companies or official bodies to attract victims.

Can the job checker tell me a vacancy is safe?

No. The job checker shows only the warning signs it finds in the ad text and why they matter, and it never says a vacancy is safe. Always check the company through official channels before sending data or money.

Where should I report a fake job ad in Indonesia?

If you lost money or were harmed, make a police report at the SPKT desk of the nearest police station, and report to IASC if you transferred money. For overseas job offers, contact KP2MI. The full options by situation are on the Report page.
