Watch for offers with one or more of these signs:
- Your passport or ID card will be kept by the agent, sponsor or "company".
- You will be housed in a house or dormitory before departure.
- Your wages will be cut to repay a "debt" for recruitment, tickets or lodging.

The offer below is an illustration written by the KarirAman editors from the patterns described by Kemlu and Kemnaker, not a copy of a real message:

What does Indonesian law say about human trafficking?
UU 21/2007 on the Eradication of Trafficking in Persons, Article 1, defines trafficking as recruiting, transporting, harbouring, sending, transferring or receiving a person through means such as fraud, abuse of a vulnerable position or debt bondage, for the purpose of exploitation. Exploitation includes forced labour or services, with or without the victim's consent. For work abroad, UU 18/2017 Article 69 bans individuals from placing Indonesian migrant workers. This page deliberately does not quote the penalties until the editors check whether UU 1/2026 on criminal penalty adjustment changed them.
Where do you report human trafficking in Indonesia, and how can you help a relative?
If your relative is abroad, file a case complaint through Kemlu's Peduli WNI portal or call its hotline, and contact KP2MI. Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between an ordinary job scam and trafficking?
A job scam usually takes your money or data. Trafficking, under UU 21/2007 Article 1, is recruiting, transporting, harbouring or sending a person through means such as fraud or debt bondage for the purpose of exploitation, including forced labour.
Who counts as a trafficking victim, even if I agreed to go?
Yes. UU 21/2007 Article 1 says exploitation can happen with or without the victim's consent, and Article 26 says consent does not remove prosecution. Tell the police or the Indonesian mission exactly what happened.
What rights do trafficking victims have in Indonesia?
UU 21/2007 Article 48 gives the right to restitution, compensation set in the court judgment. Article 51 gives the right to health and social rehabilitation, return home and social reintegration once the case is reported to the police. Article 27 says traffickers lose any claim on debts used to exploit the victim.
Will a victim who was forced to commit a crime be punished?
UU 21/2007 Article 18 says victims who commit crimes because traffickers forced them are not punished. Whether someone is a victim is decided by law enforcement, so keep evidence and give the full account.
