What jobs are there on a palm oil plantation in Indonesia?
Work on a palm oil estate falls into harvesting, upkeep and supervision. Harvesters cut fresh fruit bunches and collect loose fruit, field workers clear palm circles, fertilise and spray, foremen (mandor) lead crews, clerks (krani) record harvest and attendance, and estate assistants run one division. The national Palm Oil Estate Foreman standard (Decree 414/2015) includes units on assigning tasks, directing harvests and assessing work.
- Harvesting ripe fresh fruit bunches with a chisel or sickle pole and collecting loose fruit.
- Carrying the harvest to the collection point and recording the number of bunches each day.
- Field upkeep: clearing palm circles and paths, pruning fronds and applying fertiliser.
- Spraying herbicide or pesticide according to procedure while wearing protective equipment.
- Foreman (mandor): assigning crew tasks, directing harvesting and upkeep, and assessing the work.
- Clerk (krani): recording harvest, attendance and material use for estate reports.
- Estate assistant: planning the work of one estate division (afdeling), managing its budget and reporting.
What do you need to work on a palm oil plantation in Indonesia?
Estate work is not a licensed profession. Harvesters and field workers mainly need good health and readiness for physical work, foremen and clerks need experience and record keeping, and estate assistants usually hold a D3 or S1 in agriculture. Workers must be adults: Law 13/2003 Article 68 bars employers from employing children. Manpower Circular M/6/HK.04/V/2025 bans discrimination of any kind in recruitment, including age limits the work does not require.
What does a typical palm oil plantation worker job description look like?
Palm oil estate adverts in Indonesia usually state the estate location, the post (harvester, upkeep, foreman, clerk, assistant), daily or piece-rate pay, housing and the contract type. We wrote the description below ourselves from common advertising patterns; it is not a vacancy from any company. A genuine advert names a company you can check and does not ask applicants for transport or mess fees.
General example, not a vacancy
We wrote this description ourselves from what job ads usually ask for. It is not a vacancy from any company.
Commonly requested requirements
- Harvesters and field workers: primary to senior secondary schooling, good health and readiness for outdoor physical work.
- Foremen and clerks: senior secondary or vocational school, estate experience, record keeping and crew leadership.
- Estate assistants: a D3 or S1 in agriculture or plantation science, often through a company management trainee programme.
- Willingness to live in estate housing or a mess far from town.
- Knowledge of estate safety, including protective equipment for harvesting and spraying.
Skills
Harvesting technique, Crop maintenance, Use of protective equipment, Safe pesticide handling, Harvest record keeping, Crew leadership, Physical stamina, Reading estate block maps.
Ministry of Manpower Circular M/6/HK.04/V/2025 bars employers from discriminating on any basis in recruitment. An age requirement is allowed only where the nature of the job genuinely affects ability and it does not remove the chance of work, and the same applies to workers with disabilities. Law 13/2003 Articles 5 and 6 guarantee equal opportunity and treatment without discrimination. JDIH Kementerian Ketenagakerjaan JDIH BPK RI (peraturan.bpk.go.id)
How much does a palm oil plantation worker earn in Indonesia?
KarirAman does not show a pay figure for palm oil plantation workers yet because no data meets our standard. BPS recorded that the lowest wages for both male and female employees in May 2026 were in agriculture, forestry and fishing. Piece rates are recognised by Government Regulation 36/2021, but its Article 23 still bars pay below the minimum wage. Ask for targets, rates and deductions in writing.

Which education routes lead to estate work and promotion?
Harvesters and field workers usually learn on the estate, while the route to estate assistant is usually a D3 or S1 in agriculture plus a company management trainee programme. The Ministry of Manpower has national standards for Palm Oil Estate Assistant (124/2011), Palm Oil Estate Foreman (414/2015) and Sustainable Palm Oil Plantation (237/2019), with harvesting and safety units. Certificates based on these standards are tested at BNSP-licensed certification bodies.

Can you work on a Malaysian palm oil estate legally?
Yes, through legal channels. The Immigration Department of Malaysia lists plantations among the sectors allowed to employ foreign workers on the Visitor's Pass (Temporary Employment), and the employer is responsible for the deposit, visa and levy. KP2MI recorded Plantation Worker among the five largest migrant worker jobs in August 2026. Use a licensed P3MI and a SISKOP2MI vacancy, because most complaints that month came from placements in Malaysia.
What are the employment status, piece-rate pay and BPJS rules for estate workers?
Estate workers can be permanent, on fixed-term contracts (PKWT) or daily casual workers. Government Regulation 35/2021 Article 10 says a daily worker who works 21 days or more a month for three consecutive months becomes a permanent employee by law. Piece rates are agreed per output (Government Regulation 36/2021 Article 18) and must come with an itemised payslip (Article 53). Law 24/2011 Article 15 requires employers to register workers with BPJS.
Legal status: the Labour Protection Law was approved by the DPR and the Government on 6 October 2026 but has not been promulgated and its text is not public. Until it takes effect, the rules on this page apply.
Dewan Perwakilan Rakyat RI (emedia); Kementerian Ketenagakerjaan RI
How do you stay safe while harvesting and spraying pesticides?
Safety on an estate starts with protective equipment. Law 1/1970 Article 14(c) requires management to provide protective equipment free of charge, and Article 12 gives workers the right to object when safety conditions or protective equipment are in doubt. When spraying, ask for a mask, gloves, boots and protective clothing. When harvesting, watch for falling fronds and bunches, and drink enough water in the heat.
What are the warning signs of trafficking in plantation job offers?
Estate job offers that end in trafficking usually show several of these signs at once:
- Transport, travel food or mess costs are "covered" at first, then turned into a debt deducted from wages that is never paid off.
- Your ID card, diploma or passport is held by a foreman, broker or agent.
- You are sent abroad by land or sea with no P3MI, no employment agreement and no SISKOP2MI vacancy.
- Your movement is restricted, you may not contact your family, or you are threatened if you want to leave.
Law 21/2007 Article 1 includes fraud, debt bondage and abuse of a vulnerable position for exploitation in the definition of human trafficking. The victim's consent does not cancel the crime. If you or your family are in danger, call the police first.

What should you ask before travelling to a remote estate?
Palm oil estates are often far from town, so ask these questions and get the answers in writing before you go:
- The name of the company that owns the estate and its office address, then check it on AHU.
- Your employment status (permanent, contract or daily), how pay works, the piece-rate targets and any deductions.
- Who pays for travel there and back, and whether housing, clean water and electricity are provided.
- Access to a clinic, schools for children and transport to the nearest town.
- When you will be registered with BPJS and who provides protective equipment.
Keep a copy of your employment agreement and photos of your documents somewhere else, for example with a family member. If you will work abroad, get your own passport through official channels; the Panduan Warga passport guide explains how.
What interview questions might you be asked for palm oil plantation worker jobs?
Interview questions for palm oil plantation worker jobs often cover the machines or equipment you have used, occupational safety and health, defects or faulty machines, meeting targets without cutting quality, and shift or site work. Each example below comes with why it is asked and how to answer it. The Ministry of Manpower warns that an instant chat interview without formal confirmation is one sign of a fake job.

How to answer: Name the machines or tools, how long you used them, the basic maintenance you did and any certificate you actually hold.
How do you apply health and safety rules where you work?
Why they ask: Accidents hurt workers and can stop production.
How to answer: Name real habits: wearing protective equipment, following procedures, reporting hazards and stopping work when it is unsafe.
What do you do if you find a defective product or a faulty machine?
Why they ask: An ignored problem can lead to many rejects or an accident.
How to answer: Say you stop or set aside the item according to procedure, report to your supervisor and record what happened instead of hiding it.
How do you meet production targets without lowering quality?
Why they ask: Factories and projects need speed and results that meet the standard.
How to answer: Explain how you keep a steady pace, check your output regularly and tell your supervisor when a target is not realistic.
Are you ready for shift work or work on a project site?
Why they ask: Many plants and projects run day and night or far from town.
How to answer: Answer honestly, then ask about the rota, overtime records, transport and accommodation, and get them in writing before you travel.
How do you stay healthy and safe doing heavy work at remote sites?
Why they ask: Remote sites make help harder to reach.
How to answer: Mention rest, drinking water, protective equipment and working in pairs. Before travelling, get the contract, pay, housing and transport in writing, and keep your own identity documents.
Common questions that also come up (12 questions)

After the interview you are asked to hand over your original diploma or other original personal documents as a guarantee for the job.
What to do: Ministry of Manpower Circular M/5/HK.04.00/V/2025 bars employers from requiring or holding original diplomas and personal documents as a guarantee for the job. The only exception is a diploma or competency certificate from education or training paid for by the employer under a written employment agreement, and the employer must keep it safe and compensate you if it is damaged or lost. Otherwise, show them for checking, then take them home.

Which scams and trafficking risks appear in palm oil plantation job offers?
The most dangerous pattern is a broker who pays for transport and the mess, then collects it as a debt deducted from wages while holding your ID card or passport. Law 21/2007 includes debt bondage for exploitation in human trafficking. Also watch for irregular routes to Malaysian estates, adverts that misuse the names of large plantation groups, and invitations for children to work.

Frequently asked questions
Can a palm oil harvester's piece rate be below the minimum wage?
Government Regulation 36/2021 recognises output-based pay agreed between the parties (Article 18), and for compliance purposes its monthly value is the average of the last 12 months (Article 19). Article 23 bars employers from paying below the minimum wage, and the regulation sets an exception for micro and small businesses (Article 36). If your pay is below the minimum wage, ask for a written explanation, then complain to the local manpower office (Disnaker) if it is not resolved.
Are daily casual workers on an estate entitled to BPJS?
Government Regulation 35/2021 Article 11 requires daily work agreements to be written and requires the employer to meet the worker's rights, including social security. Law 24/2011 Article 15 requires employers to register their workers with BPJS. Under Government Regulation 35/2021 Article 10, a daily worker who works 21 days or more a month for three consecutive months becomes a permanent employee (PKWTT) by law.
Can a foreman or company keep workers' ID cards and diplomas?
Not as a guarantee for work. Manpower Circular M/5/HK.04.00/V/2025 bars employers from requiring or holding workers' original diplomas and personal documents, including competency certificates and passports. For migrant workers, Law 18/2017 Article 6 gives the right to hold their travel documents while working. Withheld documents combined with a debt that keeps growing are a warning sign of trafficking.
Can children help with the palm oil harvest?
Law 13/2003 Article 68 bars employers from employing children. Article 69 allows children aged 13 to 15 only light work with parental permission, for at most three hours, in daytime and outside school hours. Article 74 bars anyone from involving children in work that endangers their health or safety, such as using sharp harvesting tools or spraying pesticides.
How can you work on a Malaysian palm oil estate legally?
Through a licensed placement agency (P3MI) with a vacancy listed on SISKOP2MI. Law 18/2017 Article 30(1) says migrant workers may not be charged placement costs. KP2MI Regulation 17/2025 makes the employer bear those costs, except components written and itemised in the Placement Agreement. Any request for money outside that document, in cash or to a personal account, is a red flag.
