Production operators (factory work) in Indonesia: duties, pay, shifts and applying safely

Production operators run machines in Indonesian factories; most ads ask for SMA/SMK. A deposit paid to a factory broker almost always means a scam.

Summary

High scam risk
  • Production operators run machines or line stations to standard procedures, meet targets, do basic quality checks and record output.
  • Indonesia's Ministry of Manpower says a fee in recruitment is almost certainly a scam, including payments to factory job brokers.
  • Circular M/6/HK.04/V/2025 bars discrimination on any basis in recruitment and limits age requirements to jobs whose nature demands them.
  • A fixed-term contract (PKWT) may not require probation; if it does, that clause is void by law (PP 35/2021 Article 12).
  • Legal routes to factory work abroad include South Korea's government-to-government programme via KP2MI and Japan's SSW manufacturing fields.

What does a production operator do in Indonesia?

Production operators (operator produksi) run machines or workstations on a factory production line according to work instructions and standard procedures. The job includes loading raw materials, monitoring the process to meet output and time targets, doing simple quality checks, setting aside defective products and recording output. Operators also report machine faults and keep the work area tidy and safe.

  • Set up and run machines or workstations according to work instructions and standard procedures.
  • Load raw materials and monitor the process to meet output and time targets.
  • Check quality by eye or with simple gauges and set aside defective products.
  • Record output, machine downtime and problems on forms or in the system.
  • Report machine faults to a technician or team leader.
  • Keep the work area clean and orderly following 5S principles.
  • Wear personal protective equipment and follow safety rules.
  • Work rotating shifts, including nights.

What do you need to become a production operator in Indonesia?

Production-operator requirements depend on the machine and duties. Ads commonly ask for SMA/SMK, care and readiness for shifts. Regulation 38/2016 Articles 117 and 125 govern K3 licensing and machine-tool operator authority, including CNC class I; boiler operators fall under Regulation 4/2025 Article 5. Confirm requirements with the employer’s K3 officer. Circular M/6/HK.04/V/2025 bars recruitment discrimination; distinguish statutory authorisation from irrelevant personal restrictions.

What does a typical production operator job description look like?

Production operator vacancies in Indonesia usually look for careful SMA/SMK graduates who follow procedures and can work rotating shifts. In nickel processing (smelters), which the Ministry of Industry said in August 2023 are spread across Central Sulawesi, Southeast Sulawesi, North Maluku and Banten among other places, operators work rotating shifts near hot furnaces and hazardous materials. Ask about safety (K3) training, protective equipment and housing rules before you sign a contract.

General example, not a vacancy

We wrote this description ourselves from what job ads usually ask for. It is not a vacancy from any company.

Commonly requested requirements

  • A senior high school (SMA) or vocational school (SMK) certificate; technical SMK graduates are often preferred for some machines.
  • Healthy, careful and able to stand or sit for long periods.
  • Willing to work rotating shifts and overtime as production needs.
  • Able to read work instructions and follow safety procedures.
  • Usual documents: ID card (KTP), CV, a copy of your diploma and a health certificate; some employers ask for a police clearance (SKCK).

How much do factory workers earn in Indonesia?

No production operator-specific pay data meets our standard yet, so that row in the table reads Not enough data. The floor is clear: under Government Regulation (PP) 36/2021 Articles 23 and 24, workers with less than one year of service may not be paid below the minimum wage where they work. Check the 2026 minimum wage (UMK) for the regency or city where the factory is, and ask for a payslip that separates basic pay, allowances and overtime.

Which education routes lead to production work?

The usual route for production operators is a technical SMK or SMA, then on-the-job training in the factory. Competency standards for operators are set per industry, for example the four-wheel automotive manufacturing SKKNI (Kepmenaker 179/2020), which includes operating a press machine, and the electronic equipment industry SKKNI (Kepmenaker 199/2021). On 7 October 2026, registration for National Vocational Training batch 6 ran from 1 to 14 October 2026 at no cost, with BNSP certification for those who pass.

Can you work as a production operator abroad?

Production operators can work abroad through legal routes. South Korea takes manufacturing workers through the Employment Permit System (EPS) on an E-9 visa, and from Indonesia the route is the government-to-government programme run by KP2MI. Japan includes industrial product manufacturing and food and beverage manufacturing among the 19 Specified Skilled Worker (SSW) fields, according to ISA's official explainer revised on 17 July 2026. Check official vacancies on SISKOP2MI and never travel through an individual recruiter.

Which contract rights should production operators check?

Many operators are hired on fixed-term contracts (PKWT). Under PP 35/2021, a PKWT may not include probation (Article 12), must be registered by the employer (Article 14), and the worker is owed compensation pay when the contract ends after at least one continuous month of work (Article 15). Your employer must also register you with BPJS social security (Law 24/2011 Article 15).

Legal status: the Labour Protection Law was approved by the DPR and the Government on 6 October 2026 but has not been promulgated and its text is not public. Until it takes effect, the rules on this page apply.

What is the career path for a production operator?

Consistent operators can usually move up to senior operator, production leader running a team or line, and then production supervisor. Common side moves include quality control, machine maintenance, welding, workplace safety (K3), forklift operation or production planning (PPIC). A competency certificate from a certification body (LSP) licensed by BNSP helps prove your skills when applying for higher posts.

Interested in specialising in CNC machining?

Read the CNC machine operator guide to compare operation, setup, programming, inspection and K3 authorisation requirements. A production-operator title alone does not identify the machine you will be responsible for.

What interview questions might you be asked for production operator jobs?

Interview questions for production operator jobs often cover the machines or equipment you have used, occupational safety and health, defects or faulty machines, meeting targets without cutting quality, and shift or site work. Each example below comes with why it is asked and how to answer it. The Ministry of Manpower warns that an instant chat interview without formal confirmation is one sign of a fake job.

Questions for this field

Which machines, equipment or engineering software have you operated?

Why they ask: The company wants to know how quickly you can work safely on its line or site.

How to answer: Name the machines or tools, how long you used them, the basic maintenance you did and any certificate you actually hold.

How do you apply health and safety rules where you work?

Why they ask: Accidents hurt workers and can stop production.

How to answer: Name real habits: wearing protective equipment, following procedures, reporting hazards and stopping work when it is unsafe.

What do you do if you find a defective product or a faulty machine?

Why they ask: An ignored problem can lead to many rejects or an accident.

How to answer: Say you stop or set aside the item according to procedure, report to your supervisor and record what happened instead of hiding it.

How do you meet production targets without lowering quality?

Why they ask: Factories and projects need speed and results that meet the standard.

How to answer: Explain how you keep a steady pace, check your output regularly and tell your supervisor when a target is not realistic.

Are you ready for shift work or work on a project site?

Why they ask: Many plants and projects run day and night or far from town.

How to answer: Answer honestly, then ask about the rota, overtime records, transport and accommodation, and get them in writing before you travel.

Common questions that also come up (12 questions)
  • Tell me about yourself.

Answer in about a minute: where you are now in work or study, two experiences that matter for this job, then why you applied. Personal matters such as family status are not needed.

  • Why did you apply to this company?

Mention one or two real things you learned from the company's official website, such as its business or services, and link them to your skills.

  • Why are you interested in this role?

Pick two tasks from the job advert, describe similar things you have done, and say which part you most want to grow in.

  • What are your strengths?

Name one or two strengths and give short proof: the situation, what you did and the result.

  • What is your weakness?

Choose a real weakness that is not central to the job, then explain what you are doing to improve it.

  • Tell me about a problem at work or school that you solved.

Use the STAR pattern: Situation, Task, Action, Result. Focus on what you yourself did and what you learned.

  • How do you work in a team, including when people disagree?

Give a real example of listening, explaining your view politely and finding a solution everyone accepted.

  • How do you handle pressure or tight deadlines?

Explain how you set priorities, such as a task list or checking with your supervisor, and give one example of the outcome.

  • Where do you see yourself in two or three years?

Mention the skills you want to master and the responsibility you hope to take on, without promising things you cannot know.

  • What salary do you expect?

First research the pay range for the role and the local minimum wage where you would work. Give a range, then ask whether the figure is gross or net and which allowances apply.

  • When can you start?

Give a realistic date. If you are still employed, mention the notice period in your current contract so you do not break it.

  • Do you have any questions for us?

Ask about the contract type, working hours, base pay and allowances, the next selection step and when results are announced. Ask for the offer in writing.

Warning signs in interviews (6)
  • The interview happens only by WhatsApp or Telegram chat with no formal invitation, or you are pushed to be interviewed on the spot.

What to do: Ask for a written invitation from a company-domain e-mail address, then match the contact with the official website you look up yourself.

  • The interview is held in a hotel room, a private house or another closed place that is not an office, or the location keeps changing. An invitation to stay overnight, or any sexual demand, as a condition for being hired or for renewing a contract is also a warning sign.

What to do: Ask for the interview at the office or a public place, tell someone close to you where you are, and leave if you feel unsafe. Sexual demands can be reported to the police or the local manpower office (Disnaker). If you are in danger, call the police.

  • The interview invitation arrives as an app file (APK) or a link that asks you to install an app.

What to do: Do not open it. OJK and Kominfo warn that fake APK files can read SMS messages with OTP codes and then drain bank accounts.

CNN Indonesia (official statement via media)

  • After the interview you are asked to hand over your original diploma or other original personal documents as a guarantee for the job.

What to do: Ministry of Manpower Circular M/5/HK.04.00/V/2025 bars employers from requiring or holding original diplomas and personal documents as a guarantee for the job. The only exception is a diploma or competency certificate from education or training paid for by the employer under a written employment agreement, and the employer must keep it safe and compensate you if it is damaged or lost. Otherwise, show them for checking, then take them home.

Which job scams target production operator applicants?

The most common scam aimed at production operator applicants is a broker (calo) or insider who asks for a placement payment to push an application through at a factory. The Ministry of Manpower highlighted brokering of this kind in Karawang, Antara reported on 6 February 2025, and says a fee in recruitment is almost certainly a scam. According to the ministry on 7 October 2026, the labour protection law passed by the DPR strengthens the duty to report vacancies to prevent brokering and fictitious vacancies.

Frequently asked questions

Is paying to get a factory job legal in Indonesia?

No. Indonesia's Ministry of Manpower says a fee in the recruitment process is almost certainly a scam, and it highlighted brokering in Karawang, Antara reported on 6 February 2025. Do not pay brokers or insiders. If you have already paid, keep the transfer receipt and messages, and report it to the local manpower office (Disnaker) and the police.

Can a factory set a maximum age or minimum height?

Only where it relates to the work. Minister of Manpower Circular M/6/HK.04/V/2025 bars discrimination on any basis in recruitment, and an age requirement is allowed only where the nature of the job genuinely affects ability and does not remove the chance of work. The circular does not mention height, but Law 13/2003 Article 5 guarantees equal job opportunity without discrimination. If you see requirements like these without explanation, you can report them to the regency or city manpower office (Disnaker).

Am I owed compensation pay when my PKWT contract ends?

Yes, if you have worked for at least one continuous month. PP 35/2021 Article 15 requires employers to pay compensation when a fixed-term contract (PKWT) ends, and if the contract is extended, compensation is paid for the period before the extension. The amount is proportional to your length of service under Article 16. Keep a copy of every contract.

Do I have to pay placement fees to work abroad as a production operator?

Law 18/2017 Article 30(1) says Indonesian migrant workers (PMI) may not be charged placement costs. KP2MI Ministerial Regulation 17/2025 makes the employer bear placement costs by default, and you may be charged only costs written and itemised in your Placement Agreement (Perjanjian Penempatan). Any request for money outside that document, in cash or to a personal account, is a red flag.

How do you legally get a factory job in South Korea?

From Indonesia, factory work in South Korea under the Employment Permit System (EPS) goes through the government-to-government programme run by KP2MI, on an E-9 visa. Follow announcements on KP2MI's site and on the official EPS site of Korea's Ministry of Employment and Labor, which also offers a service to report brokers. Do not trust recruiters who promise a paid shortcut.
