What is an SMK and how is it different from an SMA?

An SMK (Sekolah Menengah Kejuruan, vocational high school) is a secondary school that prepares students mainly to work in a specific field, while an SMA focuses on general knowledge for university. The distinction is set out in the elucidation of Article 15 of Law 20/2003 on the National Education System. SMK, SMA, MA and MAK are all forms of secondary education (Article 18(3)), so SMK graduates can still go on to a diploma or applied bachelor's programme.

How do you choose an SMK major that leads to jobs?

Choose an SMK major that matches jobs that actually exist where you live or plan to work. In practice: look at domestic vacancies for your city on the Ministry of Manpower's Karirhub portal, ask the school job centre where graduates of that major work, and ask whether the school works with a certification body (LSP) for competence tests in that field. KarirAman's career guides also list the education routes for each occupation.

What is a competence certificate and how do SMK graduates get one?

A competence certificate recognises that you can do a specific job after passing a competence test, unlike an ijazah, which recognises completing a school level (Law 20/2003 Article 61). Tests are run by certification bodies (LSP) licensed by BNSP, Indonesia's national professional certification agency. Before a test, look the LSP up in the BNSP directory and confirm its status is Lisensi Aktif. Afterwards, check your certificate on the BNSP website with its blank or certificate number.

What is a school job centre (BKK) and can it charge fees?

A BKK (Bursa Kerja Khusus) is a service unit at a vocational school, university or government training centre that helps its alumni find work. Ministry of Manpower Regulation 18/2024 Article 17 prohibits a BKK from charging job seekers placement fees, placing people who are not its alumni and placing workers abroad. Anyone asking for money in a BKK's name for a factory place is not offering a lawful BKK service. Job-fair organisers may not charge job seekers either (Article 37(2)).

What free training can you take after finishing SMK?

SMK graduates can join the Ministry of Manpower's National Vocational Training Programme, which is free and government-funded. According to Skillhub (read on 7 October 2026), it is open to Indonesian citizens aged at least 17 with a SIAPkerja account, for graduates of SMA, SMK, MA or equivalent, with courses lasting one to four months. Those who pass receive a BNSP competence certificate. Registration for Batch 6 was open until 14 October 2026.

Can SMK graduates work abroad through official channels?

Yes, through official routes. Law 18/2017 Article 5 requires migrant workers to be at least 18, competent, healthy, enrolled in social security and fully documented. KP2MI, the Ministry for the Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers, runs SMK Go Global for SMK graduates and the public; its official FAQ (17 September 2026) says the programme covers participants' training, certification, accommodation and meals. Register only through KP2MI, its regional BP3MI offices or SISKOP2MI.

What are the warning signs in job offers for SMK graduates?

The most common warning sign is a request for money before you start: registration, uniform, training or medical fees, or a payment to be slipped into a factory. The Ministry of Manpower says legitimate companies do not ask applicants for any fee. Also watch for recruiters using free e-mail addresses, interviews held only by chat, and early requests for a photo of your ID card or your bank account number. Paste the ad into the job checker to see its warning signs.

How long is SMK: 3 or 4 years?

SMK usually lasts 3 years, and some programmes run for 4 years with a grade XIII. Ministerial Regulation 12/2024 Article 9(2)(g) sets learning outcomes for 3-year SMK programmes (grades XI to XII) and 4-year programmes (grades XI to XIII). Ask the school whether the major you choose is a 3-year or 4-year programme, because that decides when you finish and can start work.

What jobs can SMK graduates do, including in software and games?

SMK graduates usually apply for jobs that match their programme. For example, according to the Directorate of SMK at the education ministry, the Software and Game Development programme has three concentrations: Software Engineering, Game Development, and Information Systems, Networks and Applications. The jobs you can reach through SMK are listed on this page. In your first job, pay may not be below the minimum wage where you work (Law 13/2003 Article 88E as amended by Law 6/2023).

Frequently asked questions

Can SMK graduates go straight to university?

Yes. SMK counts as secondary education just like SMA under Law 20/2003 Article 18(3), so SMK graduates can apply for diploma and bachelor's programmes. If cost is a problem, check KIP Kuliah on the official ministry portal.

Can a school job centre send graduates to work abroad?

No. Ministry of Manpower Regulation 18/2024 Article 17 prohibits a BKK from placing workers abroad. Work abroad must go through KP2MI, a licensed placement company (P3MI) or another official scheme registered on SISKOP2MI.

Is a training certificate the same as a competence certificate?

No. A training certificate shows you attended training, while a competence certificate shows you were assessed as competent after passing a test by a licensed certification body (LSP). KP2MI's SMK Go Global FAQ also says a competence certificate does not come automatically with training.
