What is a BPS statistics partner (mitra BPS), and what do they do?
A BPS statistical partner (mitra statistik) is a resident contracted by Statistics Indonesia (BPS) as a field or processing officer for censuses and surveys. In the 2026 Economic Census, from 15 June to 31 August 2026, officers visited businesses that had not received a WhatsApp or email invitation to fill in the questionnaire online, and every family to record household businesses. Article 24 of Law 16/1997 requires officers to keep answers confidential.
- Visiting families or businesses in the assigned area according to the fieldwork schedule.
- Interviewing respondents and filling in the questionnaire in a data collection app on a phone or tablet.
- Showing the letter of assignment and ID card to respondents before the interview.
- Keeping respondents' answers confidential under Law 16/1997 on Statistics.
- Attending officer training before fieldwork.
- Reporting results as they are to the supervisor or the district BPS office.
- Helping with data processing or entry when recruited as a processing partner.
What are the requirements to become a BPS statistical partner?
The 2026 BPS partner recruitment notices required, among other things, Indonesian citizenship, not being a civil servant, soldier or police officer, good health, willingness to work under a contract and to attend training. The minimum education is senior high school, and living in the survey area is preferred. For app-based fieldwork, BPS Cilacap asked for an Android 7 or newer phone with GPS and the ability to ride a motorbike.
What does a typical BPS enumerator job description look like?
Each district or city BPS office announces partner recruitment for its censuses and surveys, with additional rounds when more officers are needed. For example, BPS Tanggamus Regency opened recruitment of 2026 partner candidates in November 2025, and BPS Cilacap Regency opened an additional round for the 2026 Economic Census in May 2026. We wrote the description below ourselves from those official notices; it is not an open vacancy.
General example, not a vacancy
We wrote this description ourselves from what job ads usually ask for. It is not a vacancy from any company.
Commonly requested requirements
- Indonesian citizen who is not a civil servant (ASN), soldier or police officer.
- At least senior high school (SMA) or equivalent; some notices prefer students or graduates.
- Living in the data collection area is preferred.
- Owns and can use an Android phone or tablet meeting the announced specifications.
- Owns and can ride a motorbike.
- Willing to work under a contract and attend training.
- Communicates well and can read and write in the Latin alphabet.

How are BPS census and survey enumerators paid?
Statistical partners are contracted for each census or survey, so the honorarium follows that activity's contract rather than a fixed monthly salary. KarirAman has not found a verifiable official BPS honorarium table, so we do not use figures circulating on social media or in estimate articles. Honoraria are also subject to PPh Article 21 income tax under PMK 168/2023, so the amount you receive may already be net of tax.

What education do you need to become a census enumerator?
No special qualification is needed to become a statistical partner. The 2026 BPS notices asked for at least senior high school, and some preferred students or graduates. Candidates take an online competency test of 30 questions in 60 minutes, and those chosen for an activity attend officer training. Interviewing, reading area maps and using phone apps are the skills most often needed.
Is a BPS statistical partner an employee or a civil servant?
No. The BPS Tanggamus notice for 2026 states that statistical partners are not honorary, contract, PPPK or permanent staff but people engaged as field officers for censuses and surveys, and the tie ends when the activity is finished. Being in the partner database does not guarantee you will be called either; BPS matches officers to each activity's needs and criteria.
How do you register as a BPS statistical partner?
Register online through Sobat BPS (mitra.bps.go.id): create an account, activate it by email, complete your profile with your ID card (KTP), photo and diploma, verify your NIK if asked, then join your district or city BPS office's recruitment round. Some offices also ask for an administrative form through a link in their official notice; open it only from that notice. The stages are an administrative check, an online test, a final selection and an integrity pledge. It is free.
How can you recognise an official BPS census officer?
According to BPS, official 2026 Economic Census officers carry an ID card, a vest and a letter of assignment from BPS. Article 25 of Law 16/1997 requires every statistics officer to show a letter of assignment or ID card, and Article 26 lets respondents refuse an officer who cannot show one. The SE2026 question list published by BPS covers business data, not PINs, OTP codes or bank passwords.
What should you check before you apply or let a census officer in?
Genuine BPS recruitment and fieldwork can be checked on official BPS channels. Use this list whether you are applying to be a partner or an officer comes to your home or business:
- Make sure the recruitment notice appears on the official website or social media of your district or city BPS office, and that registration happens through Sobat BPS at mitra.bps.go.id. If the notice asks for an extra form, open its link only from that official notice.
- Do not pay anything. Registration as a statistical partner is free, including uniforms and training.
- Read the activity contract before you sign it: the work period, area and honorarium are written there. Keep any tax withholding slip; for filing your return, see Panduan Warga Coretax guide.
- As a respondent, ask the officer to show a letter of assignment and ID card. You may refuse an officer who cannot show them.
- Never give a PIN, OTP code or bank password to anyone claiming to be an officer. If in doubt, contact the local BPS office, and report suspected fraud to the police.

What interview questions might you be asked for BPS census enumerator jobs?
Interview questions for BPS census enumerator jobs often cover why you want to serve the public, how you communicate with residents, keeping residents' data accurate and confidential, how you respond to offers of money, and readiness for field work. Each example below comes with why it is asked and how to answer it. The Ministry of Manpower warns that an instant chat interview without formal confirmation is one sign of a fake job.

What scams target people applying to be BPS statistical partners?
The main risk is fake recruitment in BPS's name that asks for fees or sends applicants outside official channels. The 2026 additional recruitment notice states that registration is free of any charge, and in February 2026 BPS Tulang Bawang Barat Regency asked residents to confirm recruitment information with their local BPS office. Residents should also be wary of people falsely claiming to be census officers.

Frequently asked questions
Do you have to pay to register as a BPS statistical partner?
No. The 2026 additional partner recruitment notice from BPS Cilacap Regency says registration is free of any charge, and Kompas TV reported in May 2026 that BPS called the whole recruitment process free. Treat anyone who asks for money for registration, uniforms, training or a guaranteed pass as a likely scammer.
Can civil servants become BPS statistical partners?
No. The 2026 BPS partner recruitment notices require applicants not to be civil servants (ASN), military or police, and say partner recruitment is not recruitment of civil servants, PPPK or non-civil-servant government staff. The BPS Tegal Regency report for 2025 also required applicants not to be under contract with another government agency.
Do I have to answer a census officer's questions?
For basic statistics run by BPS, such as a census, Article 27 of Law 16/1997 requires respondents to give the information needed. In return, Articles 21 and 24 require BPS and its officers to keep that information confidential, and census results are published only as aggregates. You may refuse an officer who cannot show a letter of assignment or ID (Article 26).
How is a statistical partner different from a data entry clerk?
Statistical partners are contracted by BPS for each census or survey, and most work in the field interviewing families or businesses; some are recruited for data processing. A data entry clerk is usually a company employee who keys in data in an office. Read KarirAman's data entry page for similar office work.
Is tax deducted from a statistical partner's honorarium?
It can be. Article 1 of Finance Minister Regulation (PMK) 168/2023 lists honoraria as income subject to PPh Article 21 income tax and names government agencies as tax withholders. Keep any withholding slip you receive, because you need it for your annual tax return. KarirAman has not found a verifiable official BPS honorarium table, so we do not show figures.
