When do you really need a bachelor's degree?

You need an S1 when a position requires it by law or by the employer's choice. One legal example: teachers must hold an academic qualification from a bachelor's or four-year diploma programme (Law 14/2005 Article 9). Civil-service positions (CPNS and PPPK) also list required qualifications, which you can check on the SSCASN portal when a selection opens. For many other jobs, skills, competence certificates and experience matter just as much, so consider vocational routes too.

How is a bachelor's degree different from vocational education?

A bachelor's (S1) programme is academic education for secondary-school graduates that prepares students to be intellectuals or scientists able to enter or create jobs (Law 12/2012 Article 18). Vocational education such as D3 and D4 focuses on applied expertise (Article 16). After an S1, professional education is available for jobs that need special expertise (Article 17), and it can be run together with ministries or professional bodies.

How do you check a university and study programme before enrolling?

Find the university and study programme in PDDikti, the ministry's official database of higher-education institutions, programmes, lecturers and students. Then check accreditation on BAN-PT's accreditation data pages. Under Law 12/2012 Article 55, institutions are accredited by BAN-PT and study programmes by independent accreditation bodies. Degrees from unaccredited institutions or programmes are invalid under Article 28.

How can students from low-income families pay for a bachelor's degree?

Law 12/2012 Article 76 requires central and local government and universities to support students who cannot afford study, through scholarships, fee help or waivers, or interest-free loans. For an S1, the best-known route is KIP Kuliah; applicants' eligibility is checked against the national socio-economic database (DTSEN). For further study in Indonesia or abroad, see KarirAman's scholarships guide.

Why does your PDDikti record matter when you apply for jobs?

PDDikti is the official reference for student and graduate data, so some programmes use registration as a requirement. For example, MagangHub requires participants to come from a higher-education institution registered with the ministry (requirements read on 7 October 2026). Make sure your name, study programme and status are recorded correctly in PDDikti, and ask your university to correct any errors.

What is the first step after finishing a bachelor's degree?

Bachelor's graduates can apply for the National Apprenticeship Programme on MagangHub within one year of graduating, using the original ijazah (not a provisional graduation letter). The apprenticeship lasts six months with a government-paid allowance equal to the local minimum wage (UMK). Meanwhile, prepare a CV that applicant tracking systems can read, look for jobs on official channels such as Karirhub, and never pay to apply for a job.

What are the warning signs in degree or university offers?

Be wary of fast degrees without real study, universities or programmes that do not appear in PDDikti, and agents who sell diplomas or promise a job after graduation in exchange for money. Law 12/2012 Article 28(3) says degrees issued by unaccredited programmes or by anyone without the right are invalid and revoked by the Minister. A diploma like that can hurt you when an employer checks it.

How many years does a bachelor's degree (S1) take?

An S1 degree is designed to take 8 semesters, or 4 years, with a study load of at least 144 credits (SKS); the same rule applies to the applied bachelor's degree (D4) (Higher Education Ministry Regulation 39/2025 Article 18(1)). Each campus sets its own maximum study period, but for full-time students it may not exceed twice the designed length (Article 23(2)). Check your programme's status and your study record in PDDikti, as employers often look at it.
