Product managers in Indonesia: duties, requirements, pay and applying safely
Product managers decide what a digital product team builds and why, with designers, developers and data analysts. No professional licence is required.
Summary
- Product managers decide which user problem a product solves, build the roadmap and set priorities with design, engineering and data teams.
- Product management is not a licensed profession, and as of 8 October 2026 Indonesia's SKKNI register has no standard titled product manager.
- A pharmaceutical product manager handles drug brand marketing; BPOM Regulation 2/2021 limits prescription-drug advertising to health workers.
- Personal Data Protection Law 27/2022 Article 34 requires an impact assessment for high-risk processing, including automated decisions with legal or significant effects.
- A registration fee, a paid test or a course that sells a job guarantee is a red flag.

What does a product manager do in Indonesia?
A product manager sets a product's direction: which user problem to solve, which features to build first and how to measure success. The work covers user and market research, building the roadmap, prioritising the backlog, writing requirements with business analysts, working with designers, developers and data analysts, and tracking product metrics after launch.
- Researching users, the market and competitors to find problems worth solving.
- Building the product vision and roadmap with stakeholders.
- Setting feature priorities and managing the backlog with the development team.
- Writing product requirements and measurable success criteria.
- Working with designers, developers and data analysts from idea to launch.
- Tracking product metrics after release and deciding the next improvements.
- Explaining product decisions to management, marketing and customer service.
What do you need to become a product manager?
Product management is not a licensed profession, and as of 8 October 2026 the Ministry of Manpower's SKKNI register has no standard titled product manager. Employers judge your experience taking a product from idea to real users, your ability to read data and how you make priority calls. Ads often ask for a bachelor's degree in any field, experience in product, technology or marketing, and good communication with technical and business teams.
What does a typical product manager job description look like?
Product manager ads usually name the product you will own, the metrics you answer for, the team you will lead without direct line management, and the agile way of working. Associate or junior roles often suit new graduates with organisation or internship experience. We wrote the description below ourselves from common ad patterns; it is not a vacancy from any company. Circular M/6/HK.04/V/2025 bars discrimination on any basis in recruitment; the Minister flagged attractive-appearance and marital-status requirements (reported by Kontan).
General example, not a vacancy
We wrote this description ourselves from what job ads usually ask for. It is not a vacancy from any company.
Commonly requested requirements
- A bachelor's degree in any field; informatics, information systems, industrial engineering or business are often named.
- Experience in product, technology, analysis or marketing; associate roles accept new graduates.
- Able to read product data and define success metrics.
- Understands the software development process and agile methods.
- Strong communication and negotiation of priorities across many teams.
- For pharmaceutical product managers: a health or pharmacy background and drug marketing experience.
Skills

Ministry of Manpower Circular M/6/HK.04/V/2025 bars employers from discriminating on any basis in recruitment. An age requirement is allowed only where the nature of the job genuinely affects ability and it does not remove the chance of work, and the same applies to workers with disabilities. How much does a product manager earn in Indonesia?
KarirAman does not yet show a salary figure for product managers because no data meets our standard: verified vacancies with a large enough sample, licensed data or an official pay scale for the role. If you are an employee, Government Regulation 36/2021 Article 23(3) bars pay below the minimum wage, which applies to workers with less than one year of service (Article 24). Micro and small businesses are exempt (Article 36). The table below shows only the data we have.
| Data | Figure | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Pay range in KarirAman verified vacancies | Not enough data yet (n < 30) | |
| Average net wage of employees, Publishing and telecommunications (BPS Sakernas May 2026) | IDR 5,242,975 | reference for the Publishing and telecommunications sector, not specific to this career; net (after deductions) Badan Pusat Statistik |
| Minimum wage (UMP/UMK) as the floor | IDR 2,317,601 to IDR 5,729,876 | Lowest 2026 UMP IDR 2,317,601 (West Java), highest IDR 5,729,876 (Jakarta) Micro and small businesses are exempt from the minimum wage rules; pay there is set by agreement and still has a legal floor. Which study and entry routes lead to product management?
No particular degree is required for product management. Many product managers studied informatics, information systems, industrial engineering, management or design, then came in through associate product manager, management trainee, business analyst or data analyst roles. New graduates can gain experience through the Ministry of Manpower's national apprenticeship programme, MagangHub, which its official FAQ describes as free and six months long. Judge a course by its curriculum, not by a placement promise.
What is a pharmaceutical product manager?
A pharmaceutical product manager is not a technology role but a head-office marketer for one drug brand or product group: brand strategy, scientific and promotional material for medical representatives, and training for field teams. The rules are strict: BPOM Regulation 2/2021 Article 3(2) limits prescription-drug advertising to health workers, and Article 4 requires advertising information to be objective, complete and not misleading. A common way in is experience as a medical representative.
What does an AI product manager need to understand?
An AI product manager runs products that use machine learning or language models, so they need to understand data quality, how to evaluate model output and the risks for users. Personal Data Protection Law 27/2022 Article 10 gives data subjects the right to object to decisions based solely on automated processing that have legal or significant effects, and Article 34 requires an impact assessment for high-risk processing of that kind. These duties fall on the company as data controller.
How are product managers, product owners and project managers different?
These three titles often appear in the same Indonesian job ads and are easy to confuse. The table summarises the usual differences. Each company divides the work differently, so ask at the interview who decides priorities and who manages the schedule.
| Role | Main question | Typical outputs |
|---|---|---|
| Product manager | Which problem to solve and why now | Product vision, roadmap, success metrics |
| Product owner (Scrum) | Which backlog items come first | An ordered product backlog and the product goal |
| Project manager | How the project finishes on time and on budget | Schedule, budget, risk register, progress reports |
For associate roles, employers usually want to see how you think. Prepare one or two short case studies that show the problem, the evidence, your solution options and why you prioritised as you did.

What interview questions might you be asked for product manager jobs?
Interview questions for product manager jobs often cover a project you are proud of, learning new tools, explaining technical things, testing your work, handling mistakes after release, and data security. Each example below comes with why it is asked and how to answer it. The Ministry of Manpower warns that an instant chat interview without formal confirmation is one sign of a fake job.
Republika (official statement via media)
General examples written by KarirAman, not questions from any particular company. How to practise: read the question, answer it out loud, then open the guidance to compare.
Questions for this field
Tell me about the project you are proudest of and your role in it.
Why they ask: The interviewer wants to separate your contribution from the team's.
How to answer: Explain the problem, the part you did yourself, the tools and the result. Share a portfolio only if it does not break a former employer's confidentiality.
How do you learn a new technology or tool?
Why they ask: Technology changes fast, so the ability to learn is valued.
How to answer: Give a real example: reading the official documentation, building a small project, then applying it at work.
How do you explain technical things to people outside IT?
Why they ask: Technical work often needs the support of non-technical users and managers.
How to answer: Describe using simple comparisons and focusing on the effect on users rather than jargon.
How do you test your work before others use it?
Why they ask: Errors that reach users cost more to fix.
How to answer: Name how you test, such as automated tests, peer review or a checklist, and give one example of a bug caught early.
What do you do when you find a mistake after release?
Why they ask: How you take responsibility matters more than never making mistakes.
How to answer: Explain that you tell the team at once, fix or roll back the change, find the root cause and prevent a repeat.
How do you protect data and system access?
Why they ask: Careless access can open the door to data leaks.
How to answer: Mention least privilege, never sharing passwords, keeping systems updated and refusing requests for OTP codes or passwords by chat, even from someone claiming to be a manager.
Common questions that also come up (12 questions)
-
Tell me about yourself.
Answer in about a minute: where you are now in work or study, two experiences that matter for this job, then why you applied. Personal matters such as family status are not needed.
-
Why did you apply to this company?
Mention one or two real things you learned from the company's official website, such as its business or services, and link them to your skills.
-
Why are you interested in this role?
Pick two tasks from the job advert, describe similar things you have done, and say which part you most want to grow in.
-
What are your strengths?
Name one or two strengths and give short proof: the situation, what you did and the result.
-
What is your weakness?
Choose a real weakness that is not central to the job, then explain what you are doing to improve it.
-
Tell me about a problem at work or school that you solved.
Use the STAR pattern: Situation, Task, Action, Result. Focus on what you yourself did and what you learned.
-
How do you work in a team, including when people disagree?
Give a real example of listening, explaining your view politely and finding a solution everyone accepted.
-
How do you handle pressure or tight deadlines?
Explain how you set priorities, such as a task list or checking with your supervisor, and give one example of the outcome.
-
Where do you see yourself in two or three years?
Mention the skills you want to master and the responsibility you hope to take on, without promising things you cannot know.
-
What salary do you expect?
First research the pay range for the role and the local minimum wage where you would work. Give a range, then ask whether the figure is gross or net and which allowances apply.
-
When can you start?
Give a realistic date. If you are still employed, mention the notice period in your current contract so you do not break it.
-
Do you have any questions for us?
Ask about the contract type, working hours, base pay and allowances, the next selection step and when results are announced. Ask for the offer in writing.

The interview is held in a hotel room, a private house or another closed place that is not an office, or the location keeps changing. An invitation to stay overnight, or any sexual demand, as a condition for being hired or for renewing a contract is also a warning sign.
What to do: Ask for the interview at the office or a public place, tell someone close to you where you are, and leave if you feel unsafe. Sexual demands can be reported to the police or the local manpower office (Disnaker). If you are in danger, call the police.

After the interview you are asked to hand over your original diploma or other original personal documents as a guarantee for the job.
What to do: Ministry of Manpower Circular M/5/HK.04.00/V/2025 bars employers from requiring or holding original diplomas and personal documents as a guarantee for the job. The only exception is a diploma or competency certificate from education or training paid for by the employer under a written employment agreement, and the employer must keep it safe and compensate you if it is damaged or lost. Otherwise, show them for checking, then take them home.

What scams target product manager job seekers?
The scam risk for product manager vacancies is low, but the common patterns still appear: registration or test fees, interviews held only by chat, and case-study files sent as APKs. The Ministry of Manpower names any fee during recruitment as a sign of a fake vacancy. Also watch for product tester or product review tasks from home that pay a little and then ask for a deposit; the Satgas PASTI task force describes this part-time deposit pattern.

Where can you find safe product manager vacancies?
Look for product manager vacancies on companies' official careers sites, the Ministry of Manpower's Karirhub portal and the state-owned enterprise (BUMN) careers directory. A fair process usually includes a product case study with a clear deadline, then interviews with the product, technology and leadership teams by e-mail from the company's own domain. Check the company name on AHU before sending personal documents. KarirAman has no verified product manager vacancies yet, so match each ad with the employer's official channels.

How is a product manager different from a business analyst or a project manager?
A product manager decides what to build and why, based on user problems and business goals. A business analyst details the requirements and processes so the development team can build them correctly. A project manager makes sure a project finishes on schedule, on budget and within scope. The three work closely, and in small teams one person often covers more than one role, so read the duties in each ad carefully.
Frequently asked questions
What is an associate product manager?
An associate product manager is the entry-level role in product management. The work supports a product manager: user research, writing requirements, analysing metrics and preparing small feature releases. Some companies open the role to new graduates through a dedicated programme, others through a management trainee scheme. A genuine programme never asks you to pay to join the selection.
Does a product manager need to code?
Not necessarily. A product manager needs to understand how software is built, its technical limits and the terms developers use, so they can weigh proposals and risks sensibly. Reading data, writing clear requirements and communicating well usually matter more than being able to write code yourself.
What is the difference between a product manager and a product owner?
Product owner is a role in Scrum. The November 2020 Scrum Guide says the product owner is accountable for maximising the value of the product resulting from the Scrum team's work and for managing the product backlog, including setting the product goal and ordering backlog items. Product manager is a broader job that also covers market research and strategy. Many companies use both titles for similar work, so read the duties.
Can a product manager vacancy set a maximum age?
Ministry of Manpower Circular M/6/HK.04/V/2025 bars employers from discriminating on any basis in recruitment. Age limits are allowed only where the nature of the job genuinely affects a person's ability to do it, and must not reduce the chance of getting work. A product manager's skill can be judged through a case study, examples of product decisions and interviews, not through the applicant's age.
How can I build a product manager portfolio without experience?
Pick one real problem, such as a queue for campus registration or ordering in a family business. Write down who the users are, the evidence of the problem, several possible solutions, why you prioritised as you did and how you would measure success. If you can, test it with a simple prototype. Do not use confidential data from a company where you interned or worked.
