What does a medical representative do in Indonesia?
A medical representative, or medrep, visits doctors, hospitals, clinics and pharmacies in Indonesia to present a drug company's prescription medicines: ingredients, indications, dosage and safety data. Reps log visits in an app or daily report, work towards territory targets and attend product training. BPOM Regulation 2/2021 Article 3 allows prescription-only (obat keras) medicines to be advertised only to health workers.
- Visit doctors, hospitals, clinics and pharmacies following the territory's call plan.
- Explain a prescription medicine's ingredients, indications, dosage and safety data using the company's approved material.
- Record every visit and health workers' feedback in an app or daily report.
- Work towards visit and sales targets for the territory and check product stock at pharmacies and hospitals.
- Attend product training, product knowledge tests and the company's compliance training.
- Help run scientific meetings within the sponsorship rules.
- Pass reports of side effects or product complaints to the responsible team in the company.
What do you need to become a medical representative in Indonesia?
Medrep ads in Indonesia usually ask for a diploma or bachelor's degree in any subject, with pharmacy, health or biology as a plus, presentation skills, and a motorcycle licence (SIM C) with your own motorbike. It is not a licensed profession like pharmacy. The pharmaceutical industry's marketing code says the company is responsible for its reps' conduct and must train them in technical knowledge of its products.
What does a typical medical representative job description look like?
A clear medrep ad names the pharmaceutical company or distributor, the territory, the product group, the base pay and incentive system, and who pays for the vehicle. We wrote the description below ourselves from common advertising patterns. It is not a vacancy from any company. Check any ad that only mentions a big brand name with no office address and then asks for money upfront.
General example, not a vacancy
We wrote this description ourselves from what job ads usually ask for. It is not a vacancy from any company.

Ministry of Manpower Circular M/6/HK.04/V/2025 bars employers from discriminating on any basis in recruitment. How much does a medical representative earn in Indonesia?
A medical rep's pay in Indonesia is usually base pay plus target incentives. Where pay consists of base pay and non-fixed allowances, Government Regulation 36/2021 Article 23(2) requires base pay of at least the minimum wage, which applies to workers with less than one year of service; micro and small businesses are exempt (Article 36). KarirAman does not show a medrep-specific figure yet, because no data meets our standard.

Which education routes lead to medical representative work in Indonesia?
The usual route is a diploma or bachelor's degree, especially in pharmacy, health, biology or chemistry, though many companies accept other subjects and teach product knowledge from scratch. Our search of the Ministry of Manpower's competency standards (SKKNI) register on 8 October 2026 found no standard specifically for medical representatives. Presentation and sales skills can be built through training, including at public training centres (BLK or BPVP).
Can a medical rep give doctors gifts or money in Indonesia?
Not freely. Health Ministry Regulation 58/2016 on sponsorship for health workers says sponsorship must not affect their independence, must not be cash or cash equivalent and must not be given directly to individuals, except fees for speakers or moderators. For health workers who are employees, it goes through their institution (Article 6). Recipients and sponsors must report it to the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) within 30 working days. The industry's marketing code also bans incentives linked to products.
Who pays for the motorbike, fuel and targets of a medical rep?
Many medrep ads ask for your own motorbike and SIM C, so before signing ask whether there is a transport, fuel, servicing or vehicle rental allowance, and make sure it is written into the contract. If the company lends you a motorbike and deducts rent from your pay, Government Regulation 36/2021 Article 63 requires a written agreement. Minister of Manpower Circular M/5/HK.04.00/V/2025 bans employers from holding your BPKB or original diploma.

How do you apply for a medical representative job safely?
Applying safely for a medrep job in Indonesia means confirming that the company is real, paying nothing and knowing who pays for the vehicle before you sign.
- Look for the same vacancy on the official careers site of the pharmaceutical company or distributor, or on the Ministry of Manpower's Karirhub portal.
- Check the registered company name in AHU and make sure the recruiter's e-mail uses the company domain.
- Refuse any request for a product training fee, uniform fee, motorbike down payment or deposit.
- Ask for the base pay, incentive scheme, targets, transport allowance and vehicle costs in writing.
- Bring copies of your diploma and vehicle registration if asked; your BPKB and original diploma must not be kept as a guarantee.
- If your SIM C is about to expire, see Panduan Warga guide to renewing a driving licence (SIM) before you start.

What interview questions might you be asked for medical representative jobs?
Interview questions for medical representative jobs often cover how you offer products, targets you have met, dealing with angry customers, what you do when you miss a target, and honesty in selling. Each example below comes with why it is asked and how to answer it. The Ministry of Manpower warns that an instant chat interview without formal confirmation is one sign of a fake job.

Which job scams target medical representative applicants?
One scam to watch for is a chat message offering a job in a big drug company's name, then asking for a product training, uniform or administration fee before any contract. The Ministry of Manpower says any fee in recruitment is almost certainly a scam, so any request for money, vehicle deposits included, is a warning sign. OJK's anti-scam task force also warns of scammers posing as big companies or official bodies who ask for upfront payment and bank details.

How is a medical representative different from a field sales executive or a pharmacist?
A field sales executive sells consumer goods such as food, drinks or household products to shops, focusing on volume and shelf placement. A medical rep gives health workers scientific information about prescription medicines and does not sell directly to patients. A pharmacist is a licensed health worker who dispenses medicines and counsels patients; a medical rep needs no such professional licence.
Frequently asked questions
Do you need a pharmacy degree to become a medical representative in Indonesia?
Not always. Many medrep ads accept a diploma or bachelor's degree in any subject, with pharmacy, health, biology or chemistry as a plus. The pharmaceutical industry's marketing code says reps need a suitable educational background and that the company is responsible for training them in technical product knowledge. It is not a licensed job, unlike pharmacists, who as health workers need a registration (STR) and practice permit (SIP) under Law 17/2023 Articles 260 and 263.
What is the career path for a medical representative?
Reps who meet their targets consistently can become senior reps, then supervisors or district managers leading an area team, and later area or regional managers. Another route is pharmaceutical product manager at head office, covered on the product manager page. Some reps move into medical device sales or hospital key accounts.
Can a medical rep give doctors souvenirs or take them out for a meal?
Only within the rules. The pharmaceutical industry's marketing code allows work-related promotional items of reasonable value, with set value limits, and bans gifts or incentives linked to products. Health Ministry Regulation 58/2016 Article 4 says sponsorship of health workers must not be cash or cash equivalent and must not be given directly to individuals, except speaker or moderator fees. Follow your company's compliance rules and refuse instructions that break them.
Can the company cut my pay if I miss my target?
Government Regulation 36/2021 Article 63 only recognises wage deductions for fines, compensation, wage advances, rent, debts and overpaid wages, and even fines must be stated expressly in the employment contract, company regulations or collective agreement (Article 59). An incentive that is not paid because a target was missed is different from cutting your base pay. Ask for the incentive scheme and targets in writing.
How can I check that a medrep vacancy in a big company's name is real?
Look for the same vacancy on the company's official careers site or official social media accounts, check the registered company name in AHU, and make sure the invitation comes from a company e-mail domain. OJK's anti-scam task force (Satgas PASTI) warns that scammers often pose as big companies and then ask for upfront payment or bank account details. The Ministry of Manpower says genuine companies charge applicants nothing, so refuse any fee for product training, uniforms or a motorbike down payment.
Can a medical rep hand prescription-medicine brochures to patients?
No. BPOM Regulation 2/2021 Article 3(2) says prescription-only (obat keras), narcotic and psychotropic medicines may be advertised only to health workers, and Article 1(2) treats any written or pictorial statement about a medicine made for marketing as an advertisement. Brochures and promotional material for prescription medicines are meant for doctors, pharmacists and other health workers. Their content must also be objective, complete, not misleading and match the approved marketing authorisation (Article 4).
