What is a D3 vocational diploma?

A D3 (diploma tiga) is an applied higher-education programme that prepares you to be a skilled practitioner in a specific field. Law 12/2012 Article 16 defines vocational education as diploma programmes for jobs needing applied expertise, up to the applied bachelor's level. Diploma programmes are open to graduates of SMA, SMK or equivalent (Article 21). The elucidation of Law 20/2003 describes academies and polytechnics as institutions that provide vocational education.

How are D3, D4 (applied bachelor's) and S1 degrees different?

D3 and D4 (applied bachelor's) are vocational education focused on applied expertise, while S1 is academic education focused on mastering a discipline through scientific reasoning (Law 12/2012 Articles 16 and 18). D4 sits at the bachelor's level, so a requirement that reads S1 or D4 is met by D4 graduates. One example is the academic qualification for teachers in Law 14/2005 Article 9, which comes from a bachelor's or four-year diploma programme.

Which occupations require at least a D3?

Health workers, such as vocational nurses (perawat vokasi), must have at least a three-year diploma under Law 17/2023 on Health, Article 210(2). To practise, health workers also need an STR registration issued by the Health Council on behalf of the Minister, valid for life (Article 260). Outside health care, a D3 requirement is usually set by the employer in the vacancy, so read each job's requirements carefully.

How can you check that a D3 campus and programme are legitimate?

Check two things before you enrol. First, find the campus and study programme in PDDikti, the ministry's official higher-education database. Second, check the accreditation status of the institution and the study programme on BAN-PT's accreditation data pages. This matters because Law 12/2012 Article 28(3) says degrees from unaccredited institutions or study programmes are invalid and are revoked by the Minister.

How can students from low-income families pay for a D3?

Law 12/2012 Article 76 requires central and local government and universities to support students who cannot afford study, through scholarships, fee help or waivers, or interest-free loans. The best-known route is KIP Kuliah. Its official portal says applicants' eligibility is checked against the national socio-economic database (DTSEN), and you can check your own welfare decile. Also ask about campus and local-government scholarships.

What can D3 graduates do if they have not found a job yet?

Diploma graduates can apply for the National Apprenticeship Programme through the Ministry of Manpower's MagangHub, within one year of graduating and from a campus registered with the higher-education ministry (requirements read on 7 October 2026). The apprenticeship lasts six months, with a monthly allowance equal to the local minimum wage (UMK) and BPJS Ketenagakerjaan cover paid by the government. Participant registration for Batch 3 of 2026 was scheduled for 26 October to 1 November 2026.

What are the warning signs in diploma or degree offers?

Be wary of fast-track diplomas or courses with no real teaching, campuses or programmes that do not appear in PDDikti, and agents who ask for money to guarantee graduation or a job afterwards. Degrees issued by unaccredited programmes or by anyone without the right to issue them are invalid under Law 12/2012 Article 28. If in doubt, contact the campus through the details on its official website, not a number an agent gives you.

How many years does a D3 diploma take?

A D3 diploma is designed to take 6 semesters, or 3 years, with a study load of at least 108 credits (SKS) (Higher Education Ministry Regulation 39/2025 Article 17(1)(c)). D3 students must do an internship in a relevant business, industry or workplace (Article 17(4)). Each campus sets its own maximum study period, but for full-time students it may not exceed twice the designed length (Article 23(2)). This regulation replaced Regulation 53/2023.
