Electricians in Indonesia: duties, certificates, electrical safety, pay, applying safely
Electricians install and maintain wiring in buildings, factories and sites and need a competency certificate (Law 30/2009). Paid certificate deals are odd.
Summary
- Law 30/2009 Article 44(6), as amended by Law 6/2023, requires every technical worker in an electricity business to hold a competency certificate.
- Energy Ministry Regulation 6/2021 says electricity competency certification is done by certification bodies licensed for the electricity sector.
- Manpower Regulation 12/2015 sets up licensed Electrical Safety Technicians and requires an Electrical Safety Expert at companies with generation above 200 kVA.
- The Ministry of Manpower lists requests for administration, training or uniform money as signs of a fake job. A paid certification package required for hiring fits this pattern.

What does an electrician do in Indonesia?
Electricians install, maintain and repair electrical installations and equipment in buildings, factories, hotels and distribution networks. The work includes pulling cables, fitting panels, measuring voltage and insulation, tracing faults, and maintaining motors and generators. The national Electrical Utilisation Installation standard (Decree 304/2019) includes entry-level units such as helping to install and helping to maintain electrical installations. Electrical technical workers must hold a competency certificate, often called an SKTTK.
- Installing building wiring: cable runs, panels, sockets, lighting and earthing according to drawings.
- Maintaining and repairing panels, electric motors, pumps and generators in factories or buildings.
- Measuring voltage, current and insulation resistance and recording the results.
- Finding the cause of faults such as short circuits, overloads or failed components.
- Switching off and locking out the power source before work, following safe work procedures.
- Helping install service connections, meters or distribution lines on outsourced electricity work.
- Installing and maintaining rooftop solar panels and their inverters.
- Assembling and wiring electrical panels at a panel factory.
What do you need to work as an electrician in Indonesia?
Electricians need electrical training or experience and, in electricity businesses, a competency certificate. Law 30/2009 Article 44(6), as amended by Law 6/2023, requires every technical worker in an electricity business to hold a competency certificate. Energy Ministry Regulation 6/2021 Article 28 confirms this duty, and Article 30 leaves certification to bodies licensed for the electricity sector.
- Licence or certificate
- Electricity technical worker competency certificate; electrical safety (K3 listrik) licence for certain work
- Issued by
- Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Directorate General of Electricity (competency certificates); Ministry of Manpower (electrical safety licences)
- Legal basis
- Law 30/2009 on Electricity, Article 44(6) as amended by Law 6/2023; Energy Ministry Regulation 6/2021, Article 28; Manpower Regulation 12/2015
What does a typical electrician job description look like?
Electrician adverts in Indonesia usually state the workplace (building, factory, hotel, project or outsourced electricity work), the type of work (installation, maintenance, panels or solar), the shift pattern and the certificates required. We wrote the description below ourselves from common advertising patterns. It is not a vacancy from any company, so there is no apply button.
General example, not a vacancy
We wrote this description ourselves from what job ads usually ask for. It is not a vacancy from any company.

How much does an electrician earn in Indonesia?
KarirAman does not show an electrician pay figure yet because no data meets our standard. As a sector picture, BPS recorded that average employee wages in electricity and gas supply were the second highest of all sectors in May 2026, but that is a sector figure, not one for this job. The floor is still the minimum wage: Government Regulation 36/2021 Article 23 bars employers from paying below it.

Which education routes lead to work as an electrician?
The usual route is an electrical vocational school (SMK), a D3 in electrical engineering or electrical training at a government BLK or BPVP centre, followed by a competency test. For electricity businesses, competency certificates are issued by certification bodies under Energy Ministry rules (Regulation 6/2021). Other industries have standards such as Electrical Panel Manufacturing (Decree 168/2020), tested through BNSP-licensed certification bodies.

Can an electrician from Indonesia work on ships or abroad?
Yes, but only through official channels. A ship's electrician working outside Indonesian territory is an Indonesian migrant worker (PMI), because Law 18/2017 Article 4 includes ship crews among migrant workers. In July 2026 the Ministry of Transportation urged seafarers to leave only through official agencies to prevent trafficking. For shore jobs abroad, check the vacancy against the official SISKOP2MI list and read the seafarer guide under Related guides.
When does an electrician in Indonesia need an electrical safety licence?
Manpower Regulation 12/2015 applies to generation, transmission, distribution and use of electricity above 50 volts AC or 120 volts DC. Installation and maintenance may be done by an Electrical Safety Technician licensed by the Minister of Manpower, while planning is done by an Electrical Safety Expert. Companies with generation above 200 kVA must have an Electrical Safety Expert (Article 7).
How do electricians move up to become electrical engineers?
Electricians usually progress to senior technician, team leader and then electrical or maintenance supervisor. The route to electrical engineer is usually an S1 or D4 in electrical engineering, then the Engineer Professional Programme for the Ir. title (Law 11/2014 Article 7). The national Electrical Engineering standard (Decree 151/2018) includes units on planning and designing electrical engineering work, and practising Engineers must hold an STRI from PII, valid for five years.
How do you work safely on electrical installations?
Electrical accidents often happen when a job looks small. Make these steps a habit:
- Make sure you understand the installation drawing and where the power comes from before you start.
- Switch off, lock and tag the power source, then measure to confirm there is no voltage.
- Wear suitable protective equipment, such as insulated gloves and safety shoes. Law 1/1970 Article 14(c) requires management to provide it free of charge.
- Never work alone on live panels or medium-voltage networks.
- If safety conditions or protective equipment are in doubt, Law 1/1970 Article 12(e) gives you the right to object.
The national Electricity Safety standard (Decree 131/2018) includes units on managing electrical hazards and managing the use of protective equipment, which can guide workplace training.
How do you apply for electrician jobs safely?

What interview questions might you be asked for electrician jobs?
Interview questions for electrician jobs often cover the machines or equipment you have used, occupational safety and health, defects or faulty machines, meeting targets without cutting quality, and shift or site work. Each example below comes with why it is asked and how to answer it. The Ministry of Manpower warns that an instant chat interview without formal confirmation is one sign of a fake job.

Why they ask: Accidents hurt workers and can stop production.
How to answer: Name real habits: wearing protective equipment, following procedures, reporting hazards and stopping work when it is unsafe.
What do you do if you find a defective product or a faulty machine?
Why they ask: An ignored problem can lead to many rejects or an accident.
How to answer: Say you stop or set aside the item according to procedure, report to your supervisor and record what happened instead of hiding it.
How do you meet production targets without lowering quality?
Why they ask: Factories and projects need speed and results that meet the standard.
How to answer: Explain how you keep a steady pace, check your output regularly and tell your supervisor when a target is not realistic.
Are you ready for shift work or work on a project site?
Why they ask: Many plants and projects run day and night or far from town.
How to answer: Answer honestly, then ask about the rota, overtime records, transport and accommodation, and get them in writing before you travel.
Tell me about a fault you diagnosed and fixed.
Why they ask: How you find the cause of a fault shows your real technical skill.
How to answer: Use the STAR pattern: the symptoms, your checks, how you isolated the energy source before working, the repair and the result.
Common questions that also come up (12 questions)

Answer in about a minute: where you are now in work or study, two experiences that matter for this job, then why you applied. Personal matters such as family status are not needed.
-
Why did you apply to this company?
Mention one or two real things you learned from the company's official website, such as its business or services, and link them to your skills.
-
Why are you interested in this role?
Pick two tasks from the job advert, describe similar things you have done, and say which part you most want to grow in.
-
What are your strengths?
Name one or two strengths and give short proof: the situation, what you did and the result.
-
What is your weakness?
Choose a real weakness that is not central to the job, then explain what you are doing to improve it.
-
Tell me about a problem at work or school that you solved.
Use the STAR pattern: Situation, Task, Action, Result. Focus on what you yourself did and what you learned.
-
How do you work in a team, including when people disagree?
Give a real example of listening, explaining your view politely and finding a solution everyone accepted.
-
How do you handle pressure or tight deadlines?
Explain how you set priorities, such as a task list or checking with your supervisor, and give one example of the outcome.
-
Where do you see yourself in two or three years?
Mention the skills you want to master and the responsibility you hope to take on, without promising things you cannot know.
-
What salary do you expect?
First research the pay range for the role and the local minimum wage where you would work. Give a range, then ask whether the figure is gross or net and which allowances apply.
-
When can you start?
Give a realistic date. If you are still employed, mention the notice period in your current contract so you do not break it.
-
Do you have any questions for us?
Ask about the contract type, working hours, base pay and allowances, the next selection step and when results are announced. Ask for the offer in writing.

After the interview you are asked to hand over your original diploma or other original personal documents as a guarantee for the job.
What to do: Ministry of Manpower Circular M/5/HK.04.00/V/2025 bars employers from requiring or holding original diplomas and personal documents as a guarantee for the job. The only exception is a diploma or competency certificate from education or training paid for by the employer under a written employment agreement, and the employer must keep it safe and compensate you if it is damaged or lost. Otherwise, show them for checking, then take them home.

Which job scams target electricians in Indonesia?
Common patterns are paid certification-plus-placement packages, fake vacancies using the name of the state electricity company, and ship or offshore electrician offers with upfront fees. The state electricity company says its own staff recruitment charges no fee at all, and the Ministry of Manpower lists requests for training or admin money as signs of a fake job. Also watch for employers holding diplomas or certificates.

Frequently asked questions
What is the SKTTK, and do electricians in Indonesia need it?
In Energy Ministry Regulation 6/2021, SKTTK stands for the competency standard for electricity technical workers, meaning the standard itself. The proof of competence is the competency certificate. Article 28 requires every technical worker in an electricity business to hold one, and Article 4(2) extends the duty to employ certified workers to other businesses whose installations connect to a licensed supplier's network.
What is the difference between an electricity competency certificate and an electrical safety licence?
The electricity competency certificate is governed by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources through Regulation 6/2021 and proves technical ability by field and level. The electrical safety (K3 listrik) licence is governed by the Ministry of Manpower through Regulation 12/2015 and covers electrical safety at work; an Electrical Safety Technician must hold a licence from the Minister or an appointed official. One job can require both.
Is a building or hotel electrician the same as a maintenance technician?
Not exactly. Electricians focus on wiring, panels, motors and electrical equipment, while maintenance technicians look after machines, air conditioning and mechanical equipment. In a hotel or building engineering department the two often work in one team and help each other. Read the task list in the advert carefully, and see the maintenance technician guide under similar careers.
Can a company charge you for certification before you are hired?
If the fee is a condition of being hired, treat it as a red flag. The Ministry of Manpower says genuine companies do not ask applicants for any money, and requests for administration, training or uniform fees are signs of a fake job. Legitimate certification is done by a certification body through a competency test with assessors, not sold as part of a job placement package.
How can you check a certificate offered by a training provider in Indonesia?
Ask for the name of the certification body and the type of certificate. BNSP competency certificates can be checked with the form or certificate number on bnsp.go.id. For electricity competency certificates, Energy Ministry Regulation 6/2021 Article 30 says certification is done only by bodies licensed for the electricity sector, so make sure the body holds that licence and ask the Directorate General of Electricity if in doubt.
