Cybersecurity analysts in Indonesia: duties, requirements, pay and applying safely

Cybersecurity analysts protect systems and data from attacks. No licence is needed, but testing a system without the owner's permission is a crime.

Summary

Medium scam risk
  • Indonesia's Ministry of Manpower listed cybersecurity experts among the 10 most sought-after fields of work in 2024 (reported by CNN Indonesia).
  • The Ministry has national standards for Security Operations Centers (2020), Cyber Security Testing (2022), Information Security (2024) and Cyber Incident Response (2025).
  • Since 2 January 2026, Article 332 of the new Criminal Code makes it a crime to access another person's computer or electronic system without right.
  • Personal Data Protection Law 27/2022 Article 46 requires written notice within three times 24 hours when personal data protection fails.
  • A course that sells a job guarantee, or an offer to pay you for breaking into someone else's account, is a red flag.

What does a cybersecurity analyst do?

A cybersecurity analyst protects an organisation's systems and data from cyber attacks. The work covers monitoring logs and alerts in a Security Operations Center (SOC), sorting incidents by severity, investigating and containing attacks, finding vulnerabilities and writing remediation advice. Indonesia's Security Operations Center standard (Decree 391 of 2020) sets out units such as analysing logs, detecting vulnerabilities in IT assets and analysing the impact of security incidents.

  • Monitoring security logs and alerts from networks, servers and applications.
  • Sorting incidents by severity and opening tickets for handling.
  • Investigating incidents, containing their impact and helping restore systems.
  • Running vulnerability assessments and, with written permission, penetration tests.
  • Writing incident reports and remediation advice for IT teams and management.
  • Helping apply information security policies and user access controls.
  • Following new threat information and adjusting detection rules.

What do you need to become a cybersecurity analyst?

Cybersecurity analysis is not a licensed profession in Indonesia; employers judge your grasp of networks, operating systems and logs and how you handle incidents. Ads usually ask for a diploma or bachelor's degree in informatics, information systems or computer engineering, often with IT support or networking experience. Certificates are optional: as of 8 October 2026, BNSP's directory lists schemes such as L1 SOC Analyst and Junior Penetration Tester at actively licensed bodies.

What does a typical cybersecurity analyst job description look like?

Cybersecurity analyst ads usually state the SOC tier sought, from level one to level three, rotating shifts, the monitoring tools in use and the information security standards the company follows. We wrote the description below ourselves from common ad patterns; it is not a vacancy from any company. Ministry of Manpower Circular M/6/HK.04/V/2025 bars discrimination on any basis in recruitment; the Minister flagged attractive-appearance and marital-status requirements (reported by Kontan).

General example, not a vacancy

We wrote this description ourselves from what job ads usually ask for. It is not a vacancy from any company.

Commonly requested requirements

  • A diploma or bachelor's degree in informatics, information systems, computer engineering or cyber security engineering.
  • Understands computer networks, operating systems and how web applications work.
  • Comfortable reading logs and using security monitoring tools.
  • Experience in IT support, system administration or networking is a plus.
  • Willing to work rotating shifts for SOC monitoring.
  • National or international competency certificates are a plus, not an absolute requirement.

Skills

Log analysis, Computer networks, Linux and Windows operating systems, Incident handling, Vulnerability assessment, Penetration testing, Web application security, Access control, Technical report writing, Cyber law and ethics, Personal data protection.

Ministry of Manpower Circular M/6/HK.04/V/2025 bars employers from discriminating on any basis in recruitment. An age requirement is allowed only where the nature of the job genuinely affects ability and it does not remove the chance of work, and the same applies to workers with disabilities. How much does a cybersecurity analyst earn in Indonesia?

KarirAman does not yet show a salary figure for cybersecurity analysts because no data meets our standard: verified vacancies with a large enough sample, licensed data or an official pay scale for the role. If you are an employee, Government Regulation 36/2021 Article 23(3) bars pay below the minimum wage, which applies to workers with less than one year of service (Article 24). Micro and small businesses are exempt (Article 36). The table below shows only the data we have.

How do you start a cybersecurity career in Indonesia, and what should you study?

The usual route is a diploma or bachelor's degree in informatics, information systems, computer engineering or cyber security engineering. Vocational school (SMK) students can take the Junior Penetration Tester occupational scheme on the Directorate of SMK's scheme list. Poltek SSN, BSSN's official school, admits high school and SMK leavers to a D-IV Cyber Security Engineering programme via SSCASN; 2026 registration has closed, and the next intake will be announced on SSCASN and penerimaan.poltekssn.ac.id. Government ICT training is also on Skillhub.

When does testing a system's security break the law?

Testing a system's security breaks the law when done without right. Criminal Code Article 332, as amended by Law 1/2026 and in force since 2 January 2026, makes it a crime to access another person's computer or electronic system without right, with a heavier penalty for breaching a security system. Article 30 of the Electronic Information Law, which used to cover this, was revoked by Criminal Code Article 622. Always get written permission and a clear scope.

What must a company do after a personal data breach?

Personal Data Protection Law 27/2022 Article 46 requires the data controller to notify data subjects and the authority in writing within three times 24 hours when personal data protection fails, stating what data was exposed, when and how, and the steps taken to handle it. Cybersecurity analysts usually prepare the technical material for that notice. Article 35 also requires data controllers to apply technical measures to secure personal data.

What roles exist in a cybersecurity team, and which standards apply?

Cybersecurity teams are usually split by function. The table summarises roles that often appear in Indonesian job ads and the closest national competency standard for each. In a small company, one person may cover several of these roles.

Common roles in a cybersecurity team and the relevant national standards
RoleMain focusRelevant SKKNI
Level-one SOC analystMonitoring alerts, sorting and escalating incidentsSecurity Operations Center (Decree 391 of 2020)
Incident responderContaining attacks, removing causes and restoring systemsCyber Incident Response (Decree 120 of 2025)
Penetration testerFinding and testing vulnerabilities within an authorised scopeCyber Security Testing (Decree 23 of 2022)
Information security analystPolicies, information classification and access controlInformation Security (Decree 191 of 2024)

To practise, use training labs and security competitions built for that purpose, or systems you own. Never probe a vulnerability on someone else's website, app or network without written permission, even if you only intend to report it.

What interview questions might you be asked for cybersecurity analyst jobs?

Interview questions for cybersecurity analyst jobs often cover a project you are proud of, learning new tools, explaining technical things, testing your work, handling mistakes after release, and data security. Each example below comes with why it is asked and how to answer it. The Ministry of Manpower warns that an instant chat interview without formal confirmation is one sign of a fake job.

Republika (official statement via media)

General examples written by KarirAman, not questions from any particular company. How to practise: read the question, answer it out loud, then open the guidance to compare.

Questions for this field

Tell me about the project you are proudest of and your role in it.

Why they ask: The interviewer wants to separate your contribution from the team's.

How to answer: Explain the problem, the part you did yourself, the tools and the result. Share a portfolio only if it does not break a former employer's confidentiality.

How do you learn a new technology or tool?

Why they ask: Technology changes fast, so the ability to learn is valued.

How to answer: Give a real example: reading the official documentation, building a small project, then applying it at work.

How do you explain technical things to people outside IT?

Why they ask: Technical work often needs the support of non-technical users and managers.

How to answer: Describe using simple comparisons and focusing on the effect on users rather than jargon.

How do you test your work before others use it?

Why they ask: Errors that reach users cost more to fix.

How to answer: Name how you test, such as automated tests, peer review or a checklist, and give one example of a bug caught early.

What do you do when you find a mistake after release?

Why they ask: How you take responsibility matters more than never making mistakes.

How to answer: Explain that you tell the team at once, fix or roll back the change, find the root cause and prevent a repeat.

How do you protect data and system access?

Why they ask: Careless access can open the door to data leaks.

How to answer: Mention least privilege, never sharing passwords, keeping systems updated and refusing requests for OTP codes or passwords by chat, even from someone claiming to be a manager.

Common questions that also come up (12 questions)
  • Tell me about yourself.

Answer in about a minute: where you are now in work or study, two experiences that matter for this job, then why you applied. Personal matters such as family status are not needed.

  • Why did you apply to this company?

Mention one or two real things you learned from the company's official website, such as its business or services, and link them to your skills.

  • Why are you interested in this role?

Pick two tasks from the job advert, describe similar things you have done, and say which part you most want to grow in.

  • What are your strengths?

Name one or two strengths and give short proof: the situation, what you did and the result.

  • What is your weakness?

Choose a real weakness that is not central to the job, then explain what you are doing to improve it.

  • Tell me about a problem at work or school that you solved.

Use the STAR pattern: Situation, Task, Action, Result. Focus on what you yourself did and what you learned.

  • How do you work in a team, including when people disagree?

Give a real example of listening, explaining your view politely and finding a solution everyone accepted.

  • How do you handle pressure or tight deadlines?

Explain how you set priorities, such as a task list or checking with your supervisor, and give one example of the outcome.

  • Where do you see yourself in two or three years?

Mention the skills you want to master and the responsibility you hope to take on, without promising things you cannot know.

  • What salary do you expect?

First research the pay range for the role and the local minimum wage where you would work. Give a range, then ask whether the figure is gross or net and which allowances apply.

  • When can you start?

Give a realistic date. If you are still employed, mention the notice period in your current contract so you do not break it.

  • Do you have any questions for us?

Ask about the contract type, working hours, base pay and allowances, the next selection step and when results are announced. Ask for the offer in writing.

Warning signs in interviews (6)
  • The interview happens only by WhatsApp or Telegram chat with no formal invitation, or you are pushed to be interviewed on the spot.

What to do: Ask for a written invitation from a company-domain e-mail address, then match the contact with the official website you look up yourself.

  • The interview is held in a hotel room, a private house or another closed place that is not an office, or the location keeps changing. An invitation to stay overnight, or any sexual demand, as a condition for being hired or for renewing a contract is also a warning sign.

What to do: Ask for the interview at the office or a public place, tell someone close to you where you are, and leave if you feel unsafe. Sexual demands can be reported to the police or the local manpower office (Disnaker). If you are in danger, call the police.

  • You are asked for a photo of your KTP or family card, a selfie holding your ID, your bank account number, an OTP code, a PIN or a password before any written job offer.

What to do: Do not send them. OJK says never to give an OTP, PIN or password to anyone, and identity data can be misused for illegal online loans.

Kompas TV (official statement via media)Otoritas Jasa Keuangan (Sekretariat Satgas PASTI)Koran Jakarta (official statement via media)

  • The interview invitation arrives as an app file (APK) or a link that asks you to install an app.

What to do: Do not open it. OJK and Kominfo warn that fake APK files can read SMS messages with OTP codes and then drain bank accounts.

CNN Indonesia (official statement via media)

  • After the interview you are asked to hand over your original diploma or other original personal documents as a guarantee for the job.

What to do: Ministry of Manpower Circular M/5/HK.04.00/V/2025 bars employers from requiring or holding original diplomas and personal documents as a guarantee for the job. The only exception is a diploma or competency certificate from education or training paid for by the employer under a written employment agreement, and the employer must keep it safe and compensate you if it is damaged or lost. Otherwise, show them for checking, then take them home.

What scams target cybersecurity job seekers?

Scams aimed at people interested in cybersecurity include bootcamps that sell a job guarantee, offers of paid projects to break into other people's accounts or websites, and remote jobs paid in crypto that end with a demand for a deposit. Consumer Protection Law 8/1999 Article 9(1)(k) bars offers containing uncertain promises. Accessing someone else's system without right is a crime under Criminal Code Article 332, so turn such work down.

Where can you find safe cybersecurity analyst vacancies?

Look for cybersecurity analyst vacancies on companies' official careers sites, the Ministry of Manpower's Karirhub portal and the state-owned enterprise (BUMN) careers directory. For Poltek SSN, BSSN's 2026 announcement says registration runs only through BKN's SSCASN portal, and the SKD test fee is paid with a billing code in the applicant's SSCASN account; BSSN says it accepts no gratification of any kind. Check the company on AHU before sending personal documents. KarirAman has no verified cybersecurity analyst vacancies yet.

How is a cybersecurity analyst different from IT support, a network technician or a software developer?

IT support helps users and fixes everyday devices. A network technician installs and maintains cabled, wireless and fibre networks. A software developer writes application code. A cybersecurity analyst focuses on threats: monitoring, investigating and testing the security of the systems those three roles build and maintain. Many security analysts start out in IT support or networking, because understanding systems and logs is the main foundation of the work.

Frequently asked questions

Can an ethical hacker test a system without the owner's permission?

No. Article 332 of the Criminal Code, as amended by Law 1/2026, makes it a crime for anyone to access another person's computer or electronic system without right or unlawfully, with a heavier penalty for breaching a security system. A lawful penetration test always has the system owner's written permission; Indonesia's Cyber Security Testing standard (Decree 23 of 2022) even makes setting the test scope a competency unit of its own.

Which certifications help beginners in cybersecurity?

No law requires a certificate, but one can help. As of 8 October 2026, BNSP's directory lists schemes such as Junior Cyber Security, L1 SOC Analyst and Junior Penetration Tester at actively licensed certification bodies; check the licence and certificate number on BNSP's website. International certifications often named in ads include CompTIA Security+ and Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH). Pay only the official body directly.

How do I move into cybersecurity from IT support or networking?

IT support and networking experience is a good foundation, because security analysts need to understand user accounts, operating systems, logs and network configuration. Indonesia's Computer Network standard (Decree 321 of 2016) already includes a unit on designing network security. A common path is to start as a level-one SOC analyst, then go deeper into incident response or penetration testing through training and certification.

Can I work in government or military cybersecurity in Indonesia?

Yes, with conditions. Poltek SSN, run by the cyber agency BSSN, admits high school and SMK leavers within an age limit to a D-IV Cyber Security Engineering programme for BSSN civil-servant posts; 2026 registration (18 to 30 August, via SSCASN) has closed. Law 3/2025 includes helping counter cyber defence threats among the armed forces' tasks. The 2026 TNI career-officer brochure lists Cyber Security Engineering only in the men's D4 column; programmes and conditions change each intake, so check rekrutmen-tni.mil.id.

Can I trust a remote cybersecurity job that pays in crypto?

Check very carefully. The financial regulator's task force, Satgas PASTI, has shut down part-time job offers that asked members to install an app and then deposit money. Indonesia's migrant worker ministry (KP2MI) also warns of syndicates that lure Indonesians with well-paid digital jobs in Cambodia that turn out to be online scams. A real security job has a contract, an employer you can check and never asks you for a deposit.
