A system administrator, or sysadmin, keeps a company's servers and operating systems running and secure. The work covers installing and configuring Linux or Windows servers, managing accounts and access, applying security patches, running backups, monitoring availability and performance, and restoring systems when they fail. Indonesia's System Administration standard (SKKNI, Decree 82/2017) includes units such as installing and configuring server operating systems, monitoring system availability, performance and security, and restoring systems.

What do you need to become a system administrator in Indonesia?
System administration is not a licensed profession. Ads usually ask for a D3 diploma or bachelor's degree in computing, or an experienced SMK graduate, with Linux or Windows Server skills, basic networking, automation scripting and virtualisation. The competency reference is the System Administration standard (SKKNI, Decree 82/2017), in force on 8 October 2026; the old 2006 Computer Networks and System Administration standard has been cancelled. Certification is optional.
What does a typical system administrator job description look like?
Sysadmin ads in Indonesia usually name the operating systems in use, monitoring and backup duties, virtualisation or cloud management, and willingness to work shifts or be contacted during incidents. How much does a system administrator earn in Indonesia?
We do not show a sysadmin-specific pay figure yet, because there is no official pay scale, no verified-vacancy data with enough samples and no ad data that separates sysadmins from general administrative staff. PP 36/2021 Article 23(3) bans paying employees below the minimum wage, which is the reference for workers with less than one year of service (Article 24). Shift work and call-outs have their own overtime rules.

Which education routes lead to system administration?
A common start is the Computer Network and Telecommunications Engineering programme (Teknik Jaringan Komputer dan Telekomunikasi) at a vocational school, then a D3 diploma or bachelor's degree in computing. The Directorate of Vocational Schools lists KKNI schemes for Computer and Network Engineering (level II) and Informatics Systems, Networks and Applications (level III). For workers, BNSP's directory lists a Server Management cluster scheme; international certificates such as LPIC-1 are optional.

What is the difference between a system administrator, IT support and a network technician?
IT support or helpdesk staff serve users: fixing laptops, printers and accounts and answering tickets. Network technicians install and maintain cabling, fibre optics, routers and switches. System administrators manage servers, operating systems, services and their backups. The standards differ too: System Administration (SKKNI, Decree 82/2017) for sysadmins and Computer Networks (SKKNI, Decree 321/2016) for network work.
Do sysadmin shifts and call-outs earn overtime pay in Indonesia?
Yes, when they go beyond normal working time. PP 35/2021 Article 21 sets general working time at 40 hours a week, and Article 27 requires overtime pay above that, except for certain job grades set out in the employment contract, company regulations or collective agreement. Article 26 caps overtime at four hours a day and 18 hours a week, excluding weekly rest days and public holidays, and Article 28 requires a written or digital order and consent.
Legal status: the Labour Protection Law was approved by the DPR and the Government on 6 October 2026 but has not been promulgated and its text is not public. Until it takes effect, the rules on this page apply.

What is the career path for a system administrator?
A typical path starts in IT support or as a junior sysadmin, then system administrator, senior and head of infrastructure. Many sysadmins move into DevOps, site reliability, cloud computing or cybersecurity. Indonesia's Cloud Computing standard (SKKNI, Decree 102/2023) includes units such as managing routine IaaS, PaaS and SaaS operations and handling incidents in cloud systems, which suit that next step.

The interview is held in a hotel room, a private house or another closed place that is not an office, or the location keeps changing. An invitation to stay overnight, or any sexual demand, as a condition for being hired or for renewing a contract is also a warning sign.
What to do: Ask for the interview at the office or a public place, tell someone close to you where you are, and leave if you feel unsafe. Sexual demands can be reported to the police or the local manpower office (Disnaker). If you are in danger, call the police.

Which job scams target system administrator applicants?
Scams aimed at sysadmin applicants include demands for training, certification or equipment fees before hiring; the Ministry of Manpower says a fee in recruitment is almost certainly a scam. Also beware of recruiters who ask for passwords or OTP codes, APK files sent by chat as a test, and high-paying IT jobs in Cambodia where you travel as a tourist, which KP2MI says is not an official placement destination.

Does a sysadmin need to know Linux?
It depends on the workplace. Many servers run Linux, but some offices rely on Windows Server, and sysadmins often handle both. As an optional international example, the Linux Professional Institute's LPIC-1 has no prerequisite certificate, consists of two exams (101 and 102) and is valid for five years, according to its official site.
What is the difference between a sysadmin and a DevOps engineer?
A sysadmin focuses on keeping running servers and services healthy: configuration, patches, backups and recovery. A DevOps engineer mostly builds automation for releasing applications, such as test and deployment pipelines and infrastructure written as code. The line is often blurred, and many DevOps engineers start as sysadmins. Read the task list in the ad, not just the title.
Is on-call standby outside working hours paid in Indonesia?
PP 35/2021 has no specific rule on pay for standby without a call-out. What must be paid as overtime is the time you actually work beyond normal working time (Article 27), unless you are in a certain job grade. So ask for the standby compensation rules in writing in your employment contract or company regulations, and log every call-out and how long it took.
Can an employer keep a sysadmin's diploma or certificate as security?
Minister of Manpower Circular M/5/HK.04.00/V/2025 bans employers from requiring or holding original diplomas and personal documents, including competency certificates, as security for the job. A narrow exception covers education paid for by the employer under a written agreement. Hand over copies only and keep your originals.
Can a sysadmin vacancy accept only one gender or a certain age?
Not on gender. Minister of Manpower Circular M/6/HK.04/V/2025 bans employers from discriminating on any basis in recruitment, and the elucidation of Article 5 of Law 13/2003 describes equal job opportunities regardless of sex. Age requirements are allowed only where the nature of the job genuinely affects the ability to do it and do not reduce job opportunities. Sysadmin skills are tested through hands-on configuration and incident case studies.
