How do you join the Indonesian armed forces, and what do TNI soldiers do?

TNI soldiers carry out national defence in the Army, Navy or Air Force. Law 34/2004 Article 6 describes the TNI as the state's defence instrument, and Article 7 as amended by Law 3/2025 splits its tasks into military operations for war and military operations other than war, such as helping with disasters and cyber-defence threats. Soldiers belong to three rank groups: officers (perwira), NCOs (bintara) and enlisted ranks (tamtama) (Article 26). Requirements differ for the TNI Academy, Bintara, Tamtama and PA PK routes, and registration through the official recruitment portals is free.

What are the requirements to join the TNI?

Law 34/2004 Article 28 sets the general requirements: Indonesian citizenship, faith, loyalty to the state, a minimum age of 18 at swearing-in, no police criminal record, physical and mental health, and passing initial training. Each route's announcement adds specific requirements such as age limits, height, staying unmarried during training and no tattoos. The sex requirement also differs: the 2026 cadet intake and the Army's first 2027 Bintara/Tamtama PK intake are for men, while the second PA PK intake accepts men and women. These apply to military selection only and should not be copied by ordinary job ads.

How much does a TNI soldier earn?

TNI base pay is set by PP 6/2024, the thirteenth amendment to PP 28/2001, with a table applying from 1 January 2024 by group, rank and years of service. The table below shows the base-pay ranges for enlisted ranks, NCOs and junior officers from that regulation. Under Law 34/2004 Article 50(4), regular income also includes allowances and a meal allowance, which we do not show.

Which education routes lead into the TNI?

Senior high school (SMA/MA) graduates from the science stream or the Kurikulum Merdeka curriculum can apply as TNI Academy cadets, trained as officers at the Military Academy (Magelang), Naval Academy (Surabaya) and Air Force Academy (Yogyakarta). Graduates with a D4, bachelor's, professional or master's degree can join as career officers (PA PK), including doctors and cyber specialists. SMA/SMK graduates can apply for Bintara PK or Tamtama PK; the Army also accepts diploma and bachelor's holders on those routes.

When does TNI recruitment open, and which intakes are open now?

On 8 October 2026, rekrutmen-tni.mil.id was taking registrations for PA PK wave II from 16 September to 20 October 2026, with TNI Academy cadet registration scheduled for May to July 2027. The Army committee had opened Bintara and Tamtama PK wave I of T.A. 2027, with selection starting no earlier than 15 October 2026, and the Air Force portal listed Tamtama PK wave III from 21 September to 25 October 2026.

How does TNI selection work?

According to the TNI recruitment portal, the stages are creating an account on the official portal, regional selection near your home, central selection, then initial training. For Army Bintara and Tamtama candidates, checks cover administration, health, fitness, personnel screening (litpers) and psychology, and candidates must complete all of them. The Air Force portal asks candidates to verify their registration at the air base (Lanud) they choose.

How long is the service commitment, and how long can you serve?

Volunteer soldiers serve under a service bond (Law 34/2004 Article 23). The Army's T.A. 2027 Bintara and Tamtama announcement requires a first service commitment of at least 10 years, and PA PK requires 10 years from commissioning. After that, soldiers can serve until the retirement age: under Law 3/2025, no more than 55 for NCOs and enlisted ranks and 58 for officers up to the rank of colonel.

Is the TNI recruiting heavily?

On 13 June 2025 the head of the Defence Ministry's information bureau said the Army's plan to recruit 24,000 enlisted soldiers (tamtama) had been calculated against need, linked to forming new Territorial Development Battalions. For applicants, a large quota does not mean easier selection: every candidate must still pass every stage on the official portal, and large quotas are often used by brokers to convince victims.

  • The interview is held in a hotel room, a private house or another closed place that is not an office, or the location keeps changing. An invitation to stay overnight, or any sexual demand, as a condition for being hired or for renewing a contract is also a warning sign.

What scams target TNI applicants?

The most damaging is the broker or 'titipan' route: someone claiming access to the committee asks for money in instalments to get you through. In 2025 the Kulon Progo police arrested three people who promised PA PK acceptance and handed out forged TNI graduation letters. Do not trust anyone, including tutoring providers, who promises you will pass, and register only through the official portals. The Army and Navy committees say selection is free.
