What does a firefighter do in Indonesia?

Firefighters put out fires and rescue people, and also help prevent fires in the community. PermenPANRB 16/2019 sets the task of the civil-service firefighter post as firefighting and rescue, with activities such as roll calls and shift handovers, equipment checks, driving fire engines, evacuating victims, drills and physical training. At airports, similar work is done by airport rescue and firefighting (PKP-PK) personnel.

What education and training do firefighters need?

Most firefighters start with a senior high or vocational school certificate and are trained after they are hired. Permendagri 86/2022 sets basic, functional and technical training for fire and rescue service staff, run by the Ministry of Home Affairs or accredited government training bodies and ending with a completion certificate (STTPP). Bachelor's or D4 graduates can take the fire analyst functional post. At airports, PM 37/2021 requires a PKP-PK competency certificate.

Are firefighters in Indonesia civil servants, PPPK or contract staff?

Yes. PermenPANRB 1/2023 sets senior high school (SLTA) as the minimum qualification for first appointment to skills-category functional posts, and the firefighter post is in that category. Do PJLP or contract firefighters automatically become civil servants?
