What does a medical laboratory technologist do in Indonesia?
A medical laboratory technologist, called tenaga teknologi laboratorium medik in Law 17/2023 Article 199 and analis kesehatan in many job ads, tests blood, urine and other body fluids so doctors can make a diagnosis. The work covers drawing blood (phlebotomy), haematology, clinical chemistry, immunology and microbiology testing, quality control of equipment and reagents, lab safety, and recording results in the laboratory information system.
- Take venous or capillary blood samples and receive urine, stool or other body fluid samples.
- Test samples on haematology, clinical chemistry, immunology or urinalysis analysers following procedures.
- Carry out staining, cultures and microscopy in the microbiology lab.
- Run daily quality control, calibration and equipment maintenance.
- Apply lab safety rules and handle infectious waste correctly.
- Validate results and record them in the laboratory information system for the doctor.
- Explain test preparation, such as fasting, to patients.
- Work shifts, including nights and holidays, in hospital labs.
What do you need to become a medical laboratory technologist in Indonesia?
You need a qualification in medical laboratory technology, a pass in the national competency exam and an STR. Law 17/2023 Article 210 sets a three-year diploma as the minimum for health workers, Article 213 requires the competency exam, and Article 260 requires an STR, valid for life. Health workers who serve patients directly also need an SIP from the regency or city (elucidation of Article 263), one SIP per place of practice.

- STR and SIP
- Issued by
- Indonesian Health Council, KKI (STR), and the regency or city government (SIP)

What does a typical medical laboratory technologist job description look like?
Medical lab vacancies in Indonesia usually ask for a D3 or D4 in medical laboratory technology with an active STR, phlebotomy skills, experience with haematology and clinical chemistry analysers, and willingness to work shifts. Private clinical labs often add home sample collection. We wrote the description below ourselves from common advertising patterns; it is not a vacancy from any laboratory, so there is no apply button.
General example, not a vacancy
We wrote this description ourselves from what job ads usually ask for. It is not a vacancy from any company.
Commonly requested requirements
- A D3 or D4 in medical laboratory technology.
- An active STR; for practice, also an SIP for the place of work.
- Skilled at drawing blood and using clinical lab equipment.
- Careful, strict about safety procedures and willing to work shifts.
- Some vacancies ask for experience in blood banks, microbiology or private clinical labs.

Ministry of Manpower Circular M/6/HK.04/V/2025 bars employers from discriminating on any basis in recruitment. An age requirement is allowed only where the nature of the job genuinely affects ability and it does not remove the chance of work, and the same applies to workers with disabilities. How much does a medical laboratory technologist earn in Indonesia, and is there an official scale?
KarirAman does not yet show a pay figure for medical laboratory technologists because no data meets our standard. Ministry of Health Regulation 13/2025 Article 216 requires health workers' wages to be at least the minimum wage, and Article 219 requires health facilities to disclose the wage structure and scale and set it out in the employment contract. In government service, the civil-service functional position for this work is Pranata Laboratorium Kesehatan, paid by grade.

Which education routes lead to medical laboratory work in Indonesia?
The main route is a D3 in medical laboratory technology, still often advertised as analis kesehatan, or a D4 applied bachelor's in the same field. Law 17/2023 Article 213 requires vocational students to sit the national competency exam, and those who pass receive the competency certificate needed for the STR. Health or chemistry vocational school (SMK) graduates must study further first, because a three-year diploma is the minimum for health workers.
Can Indonesian medical laboratory technologists work abroad?
Yes, but only through official channels and after the destination country recognises your qualification. Ministry of Health Regulation 13/2025 Article 123 says health workers placed abroad as migrant workers go through licensed placement providers. Law 18/2017 Article 30(1) says Indonesian migrant workers cannot be charged placement costs, Ministerial Regulation P2MI 17/2025 allows only costs written and itemised in the Placement Agreement, and any request for money outside it is a red flag.
How do lab technologists join health centres, the civil service or special assignments?
Medical laboratory technologists can work at community health centres (puskesmas) as civil servants, PPPK contract staff or Ministry of Health special-assignment participants. The first 2026 special-assignment announcement, dated 15 July 2026, listed medical laboratory technologists among ten needed types of health worker, required an STR and set a two-year assignment. The civil-service functional position is Pranata Laboratorium Kesehatan, with posts opening through SSCASN.
Which workplace rights should medical laboratory technologists check?
Law 17/2023 Article 273 gives health workers the right to fair pay, occupational safety and health protection, and health and employment social security. Ministry of Health Regulation 13/2025 Article 217 requires health facilities to prefer employment relationships with a contract over partnership arrangements. Labs carry infection exposure risks, so ask about protective equipment and exposure procedures, and get a written contract that states your pay and shift pattern.
Legal status: the Labour Protection Law was approved by the DPR and the Government on 6 October 2026 but has not been promulgated and its text is not public. Until it takes effect, the rules on this page apply.

How is a medical laboratory technologist different from an industrial lab analyst?
A medical laboratory technologist tests human samples for health care and is a health worker who must hold an STR under Law 17/2023. Lab analysts in food, pharmaceutical, chemical or mining plants test raw materials and products, not patient samples, so they need no STR. Indonesian ads sometimes use the word analis for both, so read the duties. We cover industrial lab work in our quality control staff guide.
May a laboratory employ a technologist who has no STR yet?
Not for work that counts as practising as a health worker. Law 17/2023 Article 312 bars anyone from practising as a health worker without an STR or SIP, and Article 313 sets an administrative fine for health workers who do. If a lab asks you to start testing patient samples while your STR is pending, ask for your status in writing. Under Article 260 the STR needs a diploma or professional certificate and a competency certificate, so pass the competency exam first and apply for the STR yourself through SATUSEHAT SDMK, without a broker.
How many medical laboratory technologists do health centres lack?
Ministry of Health data as of May 2026, published in a July 2026 deck from its Directorate of Health Workforce Provision, records a shortage of ATLM (medical laboratory technologists) to fill vacancies at community health centres (puskesmas); the figure is in the table below. ATLM are one of the nine types of health worker counted for a fully staffed puskesmas. The shortage is a staffing need, not the number of open vacancies, so watch official posts on SSCASN and tugsusnakes.kemkes.go.id.
| Measure | Figure | Period |
|---|---|---|
| Medical laboratory technologists (ATLM) needed to fill vacancies at community health centres (puskesmas) | 682 | 1 May 2026 to 31 May 2026 |
| Puskesmas counted in the same data | 10,337 | 1 May 2026 to 31 May 2026 |
The shortage is the number of workers needed to fill empty posts, not the number of vacancies currently open. Kementerian Kesehatan RI, Direktorat Penyediaan SDM Kesehatan (sibk.kemkes.go.id)
What is the safer way to work abroad?
Medical lab work abroad almost always requires recognition of your qualification and registration in the destination country. In Saudi Arabia, for example, the Saudi Commission for Health Specialties (SCFHS) classifies and registers health practitioners, verifies degrees earned abroad and runs licensing exams. The safe steps:
- Check the vacancy and the placement agency (P3MI) on SISKOP2MI.
- Remember the order of the rules: Law 18/2017 Article 30(1) says Indonesian migrant workers cannot be charged placement costs; Ministerial Regulation P2MI 17/2025 puts placement cost components on the employer and allows charging the worker only for costs written and itemised in the Placement Agreement; any request for money outside that document, in cash or to a personal account, is a red flag.
- Keep your original STR and diploma yourself; hand over copies.

What does a medical laboratory technologist's career path look like?
Medical laboratory technologists usually start as bench staff in a hospital, health centre or clinic lab, then move up to shift lead, lab quality coordinator or head of the laboratory. D3 graduates can study for a D4 to go deeper into laboratory management. Experience in blood banks, microbiology or pathology opens specialisms, and those drawn to product quality control can move into industrial labs.
What interview questions might you be asked for medical laboratory technologist jobs?
Interview questions for medical laboratory technologist jobs often cover patient safety, dealing with anxious patients or families, keeping medical records confidential, setting priorities, and your professional registration. Each example below comes with why it is asked and how to answer it. The Ministry of Manpower warns that an instant chat interview without formal confirmation is one sign of a fake job.

Which job scams target medical laboratory technologists in Indonesia?
A common trick is a promise of a hospital or lab job in exchange for a processing fee; in 2026 Karanganyar police named suspects in such a regional hospital case. A lab job abroad that asks for money outside the Placement Agreement is also a red flag. The Ministry of Health says its first 2026 special-assignment recruitment for health workers charged no fee at all and ran only through its official site.

Frequently asked questions
Is an analis kesehatan the same as a medical laboratory technologist (ATLM)?
In practice, yes. Indonesian job ads still often say analis kesehatan, while Law 17/2023 Article 199(11) uses tenaga teknologi laboratorium medik (medical laboratory technologist) in the biomedical engineering group, alongside radiographers, electromedical technicians, medical physicists and orthotists-prosthetists. Whatever the ad calls it, a post that tests patient samples needs medical laboratory training and an STR.
Does a medical laboratory technologist's STR need renewing?
No. Law 17/2023 Article 260(4) makes the STR valid for life. What you renew is the SIP, which lasts five years for one place of practice and is renewed with the STR, a place of practice and enough professional credit units (Government Regulation 28/2024 Article 682). According to the KKI website, from 12 October 2026 registration for health workers runs only through SATUSEHAT SDMK.
Can a chemistry vocational school (SMK) graduate work as a medical lab technologist?
Not in medical laboratory work. Law 17/2023 Article 210 sets a three-year diploma as the minimum for health workers, and Article 260 requires an STR to practise. Chemistry SMK graduates can work in industrial labs as quality control analysts, or study for a D3 in medical laboratory technology if they want to test patient samples.
Do Ministry of Health special assignments for lab technologists charge a fee?
No. The Ministry of Health's announcement for the first 2026 special-assignment round, dated 15 July 2026, states that the whole recruitment process charges no fee at all, registration is online only at tugsusnakes.kemkes.go.id, and official information comes only from that site. If anyone asks for money with a promise of selection, refuse and report it.
How can I tell whether a lab job abroad is official?
Check the placement agency and the vacancy on SISKOP2MI before you hand over any documents. Law 18/2017 Article 30(1) says Indonesian migrant workers cannot be charged placement costs, Ministerial Regulation P2MI 17/2025 allows only costs written and itemised in the Placement Agreement, and any request for money outside it is a red flag. The destination country usually requires its own professional registration as well.
May a laboratory keep my original diploma or STR?
Not as a job guarantee. Manpower Ministry Circular M/5/HK.04.00/V/2025 bars employers from requiring or holding original diplomas and personal documents, including competency certificates, as a guarantee. The only exception is education or training paid for by the employer under a written agreement. Hand over copies and keep your originals yourself.
