What does a radiographer do?
A radiographer produces images of the inside of the body to help doctors diagnose or treat patients. Radiographers prepare and position patients, operate X-ray, fluoroscopy, CT, MRI or cardiac catheterisation lab equipment, apply radiation protection, and process images for the radiologist to read. Law 17/2023 Article 199(11) classes radiographers as health workers in the biomedical engineering group.
- Prepare patients, explain the procedure and position them for radiographic examinations.
- Operate general, dental, mobile and fluoroscopy X-ray units as requested by doctors.
- Run CT and MRI scans, including preparing contrast media with doctors and nurses.
- Assist interventional procedures in the cardiac catheterisation lab (cath lab) as assigned.
- Apply radiation protection: limit exposure, wear a personal dosimeter and use protective equipment.
- Process, quality-check and send images to the digital archive for the radiologist to read.
- Run daily quality tests and report equipment faults.
- Work shifts, including nights and public holidays, in a hospital radiology department.
How do you become a radiographer in Indonesia?
A radiographer needs at least a three-year radiology diploma, a pass in the national competency exam and an STR. Law 17/2023 Article 210 sets a three-year diploma as the minimum for health workers, Article 213 requires the competency exam, and Article 260 requires an STR, which is valid for life. Health workers who treat patients directly also need a SIP from the regency or city government, one SIP for each place of practice.

What does a typical radiographer job description look like?
Radiographer ads usually ask for a D3 or D4 in radiology with a valid STR, willingness to work rotating shifts and be on call, and experience with specific equipment such as CT, MRI or the cath lab for senior posts. Private clinics and laboratories often add dental imaging or mammography. The description below is our own summary of common ad patterns, not a vacancy from any hospital, so there is no apply button.
General example, not a vacancy
We wrote this description ourselves from what job ads usually ask for. It is not a vacancy from any company.
Commonly requested requirements
- D3 or D4 diploma in radiology; programme names vary.
- A valid STR and, to practise, a SIP for your workplace.
- CT, MRI or cath lab experience for some posts.

How much does a radiographer earn in Indonesia?
For civil-service radiographers, the table below shows the official base pay under Government Regulation 5/2024 for the grade ranges of the radiographer functional post, without allowances. For the private sector, it shows the pay range in Jobstreet radiographer ads as of October 2026, which is not an official average. Ministry of Health Regulation 13/2025 Article 216 sets the minimum wage as the floor for health workers' pay, and Article 219 requires the pay scale in the contract.

What education do you need to become a radiographer?
The main route is a D3 in radiology, which the 2013 civil-service rules (PermenPANRB 29/2013) called, among other names, Teknik Radiodiagnostik dan Radioterapi, or a D4 or bachelor's degree in the same field. Law 17/2023 Article 213 requires vocational students to sit the national competency exam, and those who pass receive the competency certificate needed for an STR. Vocational school (SMK) graduates must study further, because health workers need at least a three-year diploma.
Can Indonesian radiographers work abroad?
Yes, but only through official routes and once the destination country recognises your qualifications. In the UK, occupation code 2254 for medical radiographers is on the Health and Care Worker visa list, and radiographer is a title protected by the HCPC regulator. Law 18/2017 Article 30(1) says Indonesian migrant workers cannot be charged placement costs, Ministerial Regulation P2MI 17/2025 allows only costs written in the Placement Agreement, and any other request is a red flag.
What is a radiation protection officer (PPR) and how is the permit obtained?
A radiation protection officer (PPR) is a radiation worker appointed by the licence holder to oversee radiation safety, and must hold a work permit from BAPETEN, the nuclear regulator. BAPETEN Regulation 4/2024 requires at least a D-III diploma in engineering or exact sciences, a training certificate and passing written, oral and practical exams. The competency certificate is valid for five years, and the work permit lasts until that certificate expires.
What are a radiographer's working conditions and rights?
Hospital radiographers usually work shifts and on-call duty. Government Regulation 45/2023 requires licence holders to monitor the dose of every radiation worker, provide protective equipment, arrange health checks before, during (at least once a year) and after employment at their own cost, and provide incentives and social security. Law 17/2023 Article 273 also gives health workers the right to fair pay and occupational safety and health protection.
Legal status: the Labour Protection Law was approved by the DPR and the Government on 6 October 2026 but has not been promulgated and its text is not public. Until it takes effect, the rules on this page apply.

How is a medical radiographer different from an industrial radiographer?
A job titled radiographer is not always in a hospital. BAPETEN Regulation 4/2024 uses the terms level I and level II radiographer for industrial non-destructive testing (NDT) workers, who inspect welds or materials with radiation sources. They must hold a BAPETEN work permit, with at least a senior secondary diploma in exact sciences or engineering and a psychological test certificate. A medical radiographer is a health worker who must hold an STR under Law 17/2023. Read the duties in the ad before you apply so you do not pick the wrong path.
How should you read the civil-service radiographer pay table?
The pay table above shows civil-service base pay under Government Regulation 5/2024 for the two categories of the radiographer functional post in PermenPANRB 29/2013: the skilled category (Radiografer Pelaksana to Radiografer Penyelia, grades II/c to III/d) and the expert category (Radiografer Pertama to Radiografer Madya, grades III/a to IV/c). PermenPANRB 1/2023 revoked that regulation's provisions on credit points, appointment and promotion, so first appointments now follow the newer functional-post rules. Civil-service radiographers also receive allowances on top, and these figures do not apply to private-sector radiographers.
What is the safer route to working abroad?
Radiographer work abroad almost always requires recognition of your qualifications and registration in the destination country. In the UK, for example, radiographer is a title protected by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC), so you need HCPC registration to use it, and the medical radiographer occupation code is on the Health and Care Worker visa list. The safe steps:
- Check the vacancy and the placement agency (P3MI) on SISKOP2MI.
- Remember the order of the rules: Law 18/2017 Article 30(1) says Indonesian migrant workers cannot be charged placement costs; Ministerial Regulation P2MI 17/2025 makes the employer bear placement cost components and allows charging the worker only for costs written and itemised in the Placement Agreement; any request for money outside that document, especially in cash or to a personal account, is a red flag.
- Keep your original STR and diploma yourself; hand over copies.

What radiographer job scams should you watch for?
The scam risk for radiographers is low, but not zero. The main trick is a promise of a hospital, CPNS or PPPK job in exchange for a processing fee; in 2026 Karanganyar police named suspects in a public hospital job case of this kind. Also watch for paid STR services, which Ministry of Health Regulation 13/2025 Article 172 bars, and radiation protection courses that promise a work permit without an exam.

Where can you find safe radiographer jobs?
Look for radiographer jobs on the official careers pages of hospitals, clinics, laboratories and health offices, and on the Manpower Ministry's Karirhub portal. Civil-service (PNS and PPPK) posts open through BKN's SSCASN portal. The Ministry of Health's first 2026 special-assignment round did not list radiographers among the ten types of health workers it needed. KarirAman does not yet list verified radiographer jobs, so match every ad against official channels.

Frequently asked questions
How is a radiographer different from a radiologist?
A radiographer is a health worker who prepares patients, operates imaging equipment and produces diagnostic images. A radiologist is a specialist doctor who reads those images and makes the diagnosis. Law 17/2023 Article 198 places specialist doctors in the medical staff group, while Article 199(11) places radiographers in the biomedical engineering group of health workers.
Does a radiographer's STR need renewing?
No. Law 17/2023 Article 260 makes the STR valid for life. What you renew is the SIP, which under Government Regulation 28/2024 Article 682 lasts five years for one place of practice and is renewed with the STR, a place of practice and enough professional credit units. According to the KKI website, from 12 October 2026 registration for health workers runs only through SATUSEHAT SDMK.
Does every radiographer need a BAPETEN work permit?
Not all. BAPETEN Regulation 4/2024 Article 3 requires a work permit for radiation protection officers (PPR) and certain other workers, such as level I and II radiographers in industrial non-destructive testing. A hospital radiographer appointed as PPR needs training, must pass a competency exam and must obtain the permit; the PPR's specific requirement is at least a D-III diploma in engineering or exact sciences.
Do I need an agent to get my radiographer STR?
No. On 18 December 2023 the Ministry of Health asked health workers not to use brokers and to apply for their STR themselves online. Ministry of Health Regulation 13/2025 Article 172 bars health workers from using third parties for registration and permits, and Article 290 sets deactivation of the STR or SIP as the sanction. Prepare your diploma and competency certificate and apply yourself through SATUSEHAT SDMK.
Can a hospital ask me to operate X-ray equipment before I have an STR?
Not as health-worker practice. Law 17/2023 Article 312 bars anyone from practising as a health worker without an STR or SIP, and Article 260 lists a diploma or professional certificate and a competency certificate as the STR requirements. Finish your competency exam first, apply for the STR yourself, and ask the employer to confirm in writing what your role is while you wait for it.
How can I tell whether a radiographer job abroad is official?
Check the placement agency and the vacancy on SISKOP2MI before you hand over any documents. Law 18/2017 Article 30(1) says Indonesian migrant workers cannot be charged placement costs, Ministerial Regulation P2MI 17/2025 allows only costs written and itemised in the Placement Agreement, and any request for money outside it is a red flag. The destination country usually requires its own professional registration as well.
