What does a general practitioner do in Indonesia?
A general practitioner examines patients, makes a diagnosis, gives treatment and prescriptions, handles initial emergencies and refers patients to specialists when needed. At community health centres, GPs also run public health programmes. Law 17/2023 Article 198 classes doctors as medical workers, alongside dentists, with the types doctor, specialist and subspecialist. To practise, a GP completes medical school (S1 Kedokteran) and the clinical stage, passes the competency exam, finishes the internship, then holds an STR and SIP.
- Examine patients, make a diagnosis and give treatment within their authority.
- Write prescriptions and explain treatment to patients and their families.
- Handle initial emergencies and refer to a specialist when needed.
- Carry out simple medical procedures within a general practitioner's competence.
- Run public health programmes at community health centres, such as immunisation and health education.
- Record examinations and procedures in the medical record.
- Work duty rosters, including nights and public holidays.
What do you need to become a general practitioner in Indonesia?
You need a medical degree (S1 Kedokteran), the professional (clinical) programme, a pass in the national competency exam, the professional oath and a completed internship. Law 17/2023 Article 211 says medical graduates may practise only after the professional programme, and Article 260 requires an STR that is valid for life. To practise, a doctor also needs an SIP from the regency or city, one SIP per place of practice.

What does a typical general practitioner job description look like?
GP vacancies at Indonesian clinics and hospitals usually ask for a qualified doctor who has completed the internship, an active STR, willingness to obtain an SIP, willingness to work rotating duty shifts and sometimes an emergency care training certificate. We wrote the description below ourselves from common advertising patterns. It is not a vacancy from any health facility, so there is no apply button.

How much does a general practitioner earn in Indonesia?
For civil-service (PNS) doctors, the table below shows official base pay for grades III/b to III/d under Government Regulation 5/2024, because BKN Regulation 14/2018 places civil-service candidates with a medical diploma at grade III/b; allowances are not included. It also shows the Ministry of Health's 2026 living allowance for interns, which is not a salary. For doctors at private clinics and hospitals, KarirAman has no data that meets our standard yet. As a floor, Government Regulation 36/2021 bars pay below the minimum wage for workers with less than one year of service.

Which education route leads to general practice in Indonesia?
The route is a medical degree, then the professional clinical programme often called koas, then the national competency exam and the professional oath. Law 17/2023 Article 210 sets the professional programme as the minimum qualification for medical workers. Under Ministerial Regulation 55/2025, the medical competency exam follows a national procedure set jointly by the higher education minister and the Minister of Health. After that, doctors must complete the internship.
Can you work as a general practitioner abroad?
How does the medical internship work in Indonesia?
The internship is a compulsory temporary placement at community health centres and hospitals designated by the Minister, run nationally by the Ministry of Health. According to the ministry's health workforce directorate, it lasts one year for doctors and six months for dentists. Since May 2026 the ministry has capped interns' working hours at 40 a week and provides ten days' leave, a living allowance, BPJS health and employment cover, and transport to and from the posting.
How do you become a specialist doctor through PPDS training in Indonesia?
After the internship, doctors may continue to specialist training (PPDS), then subspecialist training, under Law 17/2023 Article 217. Article 209 says specialist education is run by universities with health facilities, and may also be run by a teaching hospital as the main provider in partnership with a university. For specialist programmes, Government Regulation 28/2024 says the collegium issues the competency certificate.
What are special assignments and Nusantara Sehat for doctors?
A special assignment places medical and health workers for a set period in disadvantaged, border, island or health-problem areas. In 2023 the Ministry of Health described Nusantara Sehat as one form of it. The first 2026 recruitment notice says doctors are among those recruited, postings last two years and the whole process is free. Government Regulation 28/2024 entitles participants to income, social security and leave.
What is the full route from medical school to independent practice?
- Medical degree (S1 Kedokteran) at a university.
- Professional clinical programme (koas) at teaching hospitals and network health facilities.
- National competency exam. Graduates receive a professional certificate and a competency certificate, then take the professional oath administered by the university.
- STR. The Indonesian Health Council issues the STR on the Minister's behalf; under Government Regulation 28/2024 it is valid for life for Indonesian citizens.
- Internship of at most one year before practice. Interns who finish receive a certificate of completion, and breaching internship duties can lead to a recommendation to delay the STR.
- SIP from the regency or city for each place of practice. Law 17/2023 Article 263(5) also refers to SIP quotas set by the government with regard to distribution and population ratios.
Doctors also work alongside other health workers, such as radiographers and medical laboratory technologists. For duties outside health facilities, see also our guide to hajj officers.
Which workplace rights should doctors check?
Law 17/2023 Article 273 gives medical workers the right to fair pay, occupational safety and health protection, and health and employment social security. If you work for a private clinic or hospital, it must register you with BPJS (Law 24/2011 Article 15), and Government Regulation 35/2021 requires overtime pay when hours exceed the rules. Ask for a written employment agreement that states your employment status, duty pattern and how any fee-for-service income is shared. Hand over copies of your diploma and STR, not originals: Ministry of Manpower Circular M/5/HK.04.00/V/2025 bars employers from holding original documents as a guarantee. If a vacancy asks for a police clearance (SKCK), the Panduan Warga police clearance (SKCK) guide explains how to get one.
What interview questions might you be asked for general practitioner jobs?
Interview questions for general practitioner jobs often cover patient safety, dealing with anxious patients or families, keeping medical records confidential, setting priorities, and your professional registration. Each example below comes with why it is asked and how to answer it. The Ministry of Manpower warns that an instant chat interview without formal confirmation is one sign of a fake job.

After the interview you are asked to hand over your original diploma or other original personal documents as a guarantee for the job.
What to do: Ministry of Manpower Circular M/5/HK.04.00/V/2025 bars employers from requiring or holding original diplomas and personal documents as a guarantee for the job. The only exception is a diploma or competency certificate from education or training paid for by the employer under a written employment agreement, and the employer must keep it safe and compensate you if it is damaged or lost. Otherwise, show them for checking, then take them home.

Which scams target doctors in Indonesia?
A common trick is a paid shortcut into a hospital job, a civil service post or a remote posting, although BKN says civil service selection is free and the Ministry of Health says special-assignment recruitment is free. The ministry has also warned about fake events and training in its name that ask for money. Be wary too of clinics that want to display your name and SIP without you working there.

Where can you find safe general practitioner vacancies?
Look for GP vacancies on the official careers pages of hospitals, clinics or district health offices, and on the Ministry of Manpower's Karirhub portal. Civil service (CPNS and PPPK) selection is registered through BKN's SSCASN portal, and the Ministry of Health's special assignments only through tugsusnakes.kemkes.go.id. KarirAman does not list verified doctor vacancies yet, so match every ad against the employer's official channels.

Frequently asked questions
What is the medical internship in Indonesia and is it compulsory?
Yes, it is compulsory. Law 17/2023 Article 216 requires medical workers who have taken the professional oath to complete an internship for consolidation, skill-building and independence. Government Regulation 28/2024 Article 597 says it must be completed before practice and lasts at most one year. Interns must accept placement anywhere in Indonesia and are entitled to a living allowance, transport and housing.
Does a doctor's STR need renewing in Indonesia?
No. Under Law 17/2023 Article 260(4), the STR is valid for life unless it is suspended or revoked. The SIP is what you renew: it lasts five years for one place of practice and is renewed with the STR, the place of practice and enough professional credit units. According to the KKI website, registration moves to SATUSEHAT SDMK from 12 October 2026.
Who runs the medical competency exam in Indonesia?
Law 17/2023 Article 213 says the competency exam is run by education providers together with the collegium. According to the higher education ministry in June 2025, the medical exam (UKMPPD) was coordinated by an independent national committee, and Ministerial Regulation 55/2025 says the procedure follows a national standard set jointly by the higher education minister and the Minister of Health.
Does the Nusantara Sehat programme still exist?
In 2023 the Ministry of Health described Nusantara Sehat as a form of special assignment for health workers. The 2026 recruitment notices use the name Special Assignment for Medical and Health Workers (Penugasan Khusus), with two-year postings, registration only through tugsusnakes.kemkes.go.id and no fee. Doctors are among the professions recruited.
Can anyone ask me for money to get a hospital job or a civil service post?
No. The Ministry of Manpower says a recruitment fee is almost certainly a scam, BKN says civil service selection is free, and the Ministry of Health has warned about fraud in its name that asks for money. Refuse any paid shortcut and report the person offering it.
