- Law 17/2023 divides the pharmacy workforce into vocational pharmacy workers, pharmacists and specialist pharmacists.
- Pharmacy degree (S1 Farmasi) graduates may practise as pharmacists only after the professional pharmacist programme and the competency exam.
- A practising pharmacist needs a lifetime STR from the Indonesian Health Council and a five-year SIP for each place of practice.
- Under Government Regulation 28/2024, prescription-only drugs, narcotics and psychotropics may be handed over only by a pharmacist on prescription.

What does a pharmacist do in Indonesia?
A pharmacist is responsible for medicines: checking prescriptions, preparing and handing over medicines, counselling patients on their use and managing stock to standard. Law 17/2023 Article 145 says pharmacy practice covers production and quality control, procurement, storage, distribution, research, and pharmacy management and services. Under Government Regulation 28/2024, prescription medicines such as prescription-only drugs may be handed over only by a pharmacist. To become a pharmacist, a pharmacy (S1 Farmasi) graduate completes the professional programme and the competency exam, then must hold an STR and SIP.
- Check prescriptions, prepare and hand over medicines with the right dose and instructions.
- Give medicine information and counselling to patients and their families.
- Manage stock: procurement, storage, distribution and disposal to standard.
- Monitor side effects and drug interactions with doctors and other health workers.
- Assure the quality of pharmaceutical products in industry, distribution or hospital pharmacies.
- Supervise and guide vocational pharmacy workers.
- Record and report medicine use, including narcotics and psychotropics.
What do you need to become a pharmacist in Indonesia?
You need a pharmacy degree, the professional pharmacist programme, a pass in the national competency exam and an STR. Law 17/2023 Article 212 says degree graduates may practise only after the professional programme, Article 213 requires the competency exam, and Article 260 requires an STR that is valid for life. To practise, a pharmacist also needs an SIP from the regency or city, one SIP per place of practice.

What does a typical pharmacist job description look like?
Pharmacist vacancies in Indonesia usually ask for a qualified pharmacist with an active STR, willingness to act as the responsible pharmacist at a pharmacy or hospital pharmacy, patient counselling skills and willingness to work shifts. Industry roles ask for knowledge of quality and manufacturing practice. We wrote the description below ourselves from common advertising patterns. It is not a vacancy from any pharmacy or company, so there is no apply button.
General example, not a vacancy
We wrote this description ourselves from what job ads usually ask for. It is not a vacancy from any company.

How much does a pharmacist earn in Indonesia?
For civil-service (PNS) pharmacists, the table below shows official base pay for grades III/b to III/d under Government Regulation 5/2024, because BKN Regulation 14/2018 places civil-service candidates with a pharmacist diploma at grade III/b; allowances are not included. For pharmacists in private pharmacies, hospitals or industry, KarirAman has no data that meets our standard yet. As a floor, Government Regulation 36/2021 bars pay below the minimum wage for workers with less than one year of service.

Which education routes lead to pharmacy in Indonesia?
The route is a pharmacy degree (S1 Farmasi) followed by a professional pharmacist programme at a university. For example, Universitas Gadjah Mada structures its professional pharmacist curriculum as a one-year package with professional work placements. At the end, students sit the national competency exam now known as UKMPPAI and take the pharmacist's oath. D3 pharmacy graduates become vocational pharmacy workers, not pharmacists.
Can you work as a pharmacist abroad?
Where do pharmacists work in Indonesia?
Pharmacists work in pharmacy service facilities, meaning pharmacies (apotek), hospital pharmacies, community health centres and clinics, as the elucidation of Government Regulation 28/2024 Article 417 lists. They also work in pharmaceutical manufacturing and wholesale distribution, which the regulation says must be licensed and follow good distribution practice, as well as in laboratories, education and government. Each place of practice needs its own SIP.
What does a pharmacist's career path look like?
In the civil service, PermenPANRB 13/2021 sets the pharmacist functional grades from Ahli Pertama to Ahli Utama; first appointment requires qualifying as a pharmacist, the pharmacist's oath and an STR. In the private sector, pharmacists can move up to responsible pharmacist, hospital pharmacy manager, or quality and regulatory roles in industry. Law 17/2023 also opens a specialist pharmacist route through further study.
How is a pharmacist different from a vocational pharmacy worker?
Law 17/2023 divides the pharmacy workforce into vocational pharmacy workers, pharmacists and specialist pharmacists. Vocational pharmacy workers, still often called TTK or pharmacist assistants in job ads, have at least a D3 pharmacy diploma and work alongside pharmacists. Pharmacists complete a pharmacy degree and the professional programme, and hold powers vocational workers do not, such as handing over prescription-only drugs, narcotics and psychotropics on prescription. See our guide to pharmacy technicians if you hold a D3 pharmacy diploma or are weighing your study options.
How do you keep a pharmacist's STR and SIP valid?
The STR does not need renewing, but it can be suspended or revoked. The SIP lasts five years and is renewed with the STR, a place of practice and enough professional credit units, so keep a record of every training you attend. One SIP covers one place of practice, so moving to another pharmacy or hospital means applying for a new SIP. The pharmacy collegium also runs a pharmacist competency recertification exam, announced on the KKI website. Never let your name and SIP number be displayed at a pharmacy where you do not actually work.
Which workplace rights should pharmacists check?
Law 17/2023 Article 273 gives health workers the right to fair pay, occupational safety and health protection, and health and employment social security. If you work for a private employer, it must register you with BPJS (Law 24/2011 Article 15), and Government Regulation 35/2021 requires overtime pay when hours exceed the rules. Ask for a written employment agreement that states your shifts and your duties as responsible pharmacist. Hand over copies of your diploma and STR, not originals: Ministry of Manpower Circular M/5/HK.04.00/V/2025 bars employers from holding original documents as a guarantee. If a vacancy asks for a police clearance (SKCK), the Panduan Warga police clearance (SKCK) guide explains how to get one.
What interview questions might you be asked for pharmacist jobs?
Interview questions for pharmacist jobs often cover patient safety, dealing with anxious patients or families, keeping medical records confidential, setting priorities, and your professional registration. Each example below comes with why it is asked and how to answer it. The Ministry of Manpower warns that an instant chat interview without formal confirmation is one sign of a fake job.

Which scams target pharmacists in Indonesia?
Besides vacancies that ask for registration or training fees, pharmacists are often offered money to lend or rent out their STR and SIP to a pharmacy that does not employ them. Law 17/2023 bars practice without an STR or SIP and sanctions anyone who employs health workers without an SIP. The Ministry of Health has also warned about fake events, training and recruitment in its name that ask for money.

Frequently asked questions
How is a pharmacist different from a pharmacy technician (TTK) in Indonesia?
Law 17/2023 Article 199(5) separates vocational pharmacy workers, pharmacists and specialist pharmacists. Pharmacists complete a pharmacy degree and the professional pharmacist programme, while vocational pharmacy workers need at least a D3 diploma. Under Government Regulation 28/2024, only pharmacists may hand over prescription-only drugs, narcotics and psychotropics on prescription.
Does a pharmacist's STR need renewing?
No. Under Law 17/2023 Article 260(4), the STR is valid for life unless it is suspended or revoked. The SIP is what you renew: it lasts five years for one place of practice and is renewed with the STR, the place of practice and enough professional credit units. According to the KKI website, registration moves to SATUSEHAT SDMK from 12 October 2026.
Can I lend my STR or SIP to a pharmacy without working there?
Do not. Law 17/2023 Article 312 bars practice without an STR or SIP and bars giving the impression of holding one without the right, and Article 442 sets a criminal sanction for employing health workers without an SIP. One SIP covers one place of practice, so your name must match where you actually work.
Can a pharmacy or clinic ask me for money when I apply?
Indonesia's Ministry of Manpower says a fee in the recruitment process is almost certainly a scam. The Ministry of Health has also warned about fraud in its name, including invitations to events and training that ask for money. If you are asked to pay before being hired, stop and check the vacancy against the employer's official channels.
What is the pharmacist competency exam called now?
The national competency exam for professional pharmacist students is now known as UKMPPAI, formerly UKAI. According to APTFI, it is run by a national committee formed by APTFI with the Indonesian Pharmacy Collegium, using a computer-based exit exam. Law 17/2023 Article 213 requires a competency exam for students in professional health programmes.
